Refueling
Safety information
Vehicle features and options
This chapter describes model-specific equip-
ment, systems, and functions that are currently
available, or may become available in the fu-
ture, even if they are not present in the vehicle.
Warning
Simultaneous charging and refueling poses a
risk of fire if a sufficient safety distance from
easily flammable materials is not maintained.
There is a risk of injury and risk of property
damage. Do not refuel and charge the vehicle
at the same time.
Additional information:
Vehicle equipment, refer to page 8.
Follow the following when
refueling
NOTICE
With a range below 30 miles/50 km, the
engine may no longer have sufficient fuel.
Engine functions are not ensured anymore.
There is a risk of property damage. Refuel
promptly.
General information
Follow the fuel recommendation prior to refuel-
ing.
To also ensure all engine functions under un-
favorable conditions, for instance steep vehi-
cle inclinations, at least 3 US gal/10 liters fuel
should be refueled.
NOTICE
Fuels are toxic and aggressive. Overfilling of
the fuel tank can damage the fuel system.
Painted surfaces may be damaged by con-
tact with fuel. Escaping fuel can harm the
environment. There is a risk of property dam-
age. Avoid overfilling.
When refueling, hook the fuel pump nozzle
completely into the filler pipe. Lifting up the fuel
pump nozzle while refueling causes:
Premature switching off.
Reduced return of the fuel vapors.
The fuel tank is full when the fuel pump nozzle
clicks off the first time.
Make sure that the fuel cap is closed properly
after refueling, otherwise the emissions warn-
ing light may illuminate.
Tank ventilation system
Principle
Follow safety regulations posted at the filling
station.
The vehicle is equipped with a special fuel
tank. The fuel tank is designed for special re-
quirements that arise from hybrid operation of
the vehicle, i.e., alternating drive with combus-
tion engine or electric motor.
Additional information:
Fuel quality, refer to page 358.

Refueling
MOBILITY
If you have sufficient fuel, search for
an authorized service center or another
qualified service center or repair shop.
General information
Overpressure caused by gasoline vapors may
form in the fuel tank. Before opening, ventilate
the tank to equalize the pressure.
If you do not have sufficient fuel, unlock
the fuel filler flap manually.
The tank can be ventilated at a walking speed,
e.g., shortly before refueling.
Additional information:
Emergency unlocking, refer to page 329.
When refueling, we recommend shutting off
the combustion engine using the Start/Stop
button.
Fuel filler cap
Additional information:
Start/Stop button, refer to page 120.
General information
If the fuel filler cap is not fitted correctly, the
emissions indicator light illuminates on the in-
strument cluster.
Overview
Additional information:
Indicator/warning lights, refer to page 140.
Safety information
Warning
The fuel filler cap's retaining strap can be-
come pinched and crushed when the cap is
closed. It will then not be possible to close
the fuel filler cap correctly. Fuel or fuel va-
pors can escape. There is a risk of injury and
risk of property damage. Make sure that the
retaining strap does not become pinched or
crushed when closing the fuel filler cap.
The button is located next to the steering
wheel.
Ventilate the tank
1.
Press the tank ventilation button
next to the steering wheel to start pressure
compensation.
Opening
The tank ventilation system status is dis-
played in the instrument cluster. In rare
cases, the tank may take several minutes
to ventilate and the combustion engine
may shut off.
Before opening, press the tank ventilation but-
ton next to the steering wheel to start pressure
compensation.
2. Open the fuel filler flap.
If it is not possible to open the fuel filler
flap after tank ventilating, press the button
again.
If the fuel filler flap cannot be opened even
after pressing the button again:

Refueling
MOBILITY
1. To open the fuel filler flap, press on the rear
edge, arrow. The fuel filler flap opens.
Emergency unlocking
It may be necessary in certain situations to un-
lock the fuel filler flap manually, for instance
with an electrical malfunction.
The release is located in the cargo area.
1. Pull the green button with the fuel pump
icon. This silently releases the fuel filler flap.
2. To open the fuel filler flap, press on the rear
edge. The fuel filler flap opens.
3. Carefully open the fuel filler cap. Excess
pressure can build up in the fuel tank from
gasoline vapor.
2. Open the fuel filler cap counterclockwise.
4. Refuel the vehicle as usual. The residual
pressure in the tank may make refueling
difficult, for instance the fuel pump nozzle
may shut off frequently.
Have the vehicle checked immediately by an
authorized service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.
3. Place the fuel filler cap in the bracket on the
fuel filler flap.
Additional information:
Tank ventilation system, refer to page 327.
Closing
1. Fit the fuel filler cap and turn it clockwise
until it clicks audibly.
2. Press on the fuel filler flap until it engages.
