Starting the engine -> Starting a petrol engine for Your Ford Ka 2 Door Third Generation (2016-2021)

Starting the engine  
Position I  
GENERAL INFORMATION  
Steering unlocked. Ignition and all  
main electrical circuits are disabled.  
The ignition key should not be left in  
this position for too long to avoid  
discharging the battery.  
General points on starting  
If the battery has been disconnected  
the vehicle may exhibit some unusual  
driving characteristics for approx. 8  
kilometres (5 miles) after  
Positon II  
reconnecting the battery.  
Ignition switched on, all electrical  
circuits operational. Warning and  
indicator lamps illuminate. This is the  
key position when driving, and must  
also be selected when being towed.  
This is because the engine  
management system must realign  
itself with the engine. Any unusual  
driving characteristics during this  
period may be disregarded.  
Postion III  
Starting the engine by  
towing or pushing  
Starter motor activated. Release the  
key as soon as the engine starts.  
WARNING  
To prevent damage you must  
not push or tow start your  
vehicle. Use booster cables and a  
booster battery. See Using booster  
cables (page 92).  
STARTING A PETROL  
ENGINE  
General points on starting  
IGNITION SWITCH  
Ignition switch positions  
Position 0  
WARNING  
Never return the key to the 0  
position when the vehicle is in  
motion.

WARNING  
If the engine does not start,  
refer to the instructions  
Ignition off. When the key is removed  
from the ignition switch, the steering  
column lock will be activated as soon  
as the steering wheel is turned.  
regarding the fuel cut-off switch. See

Starting the engine  
Do not operate the starter for longer  
than 15 seconds at a time. Release  
the ignition key as soon as the engine  
has started. If the engine has not  
started, return the ignition key to  
position 0 and repeat the starting  
procedure.  
Cold/hot engine  
WARNING  
At temperatures below 20 ºC,  
turn the ignition key to position  
II for at least one second. This  
ensures that maximum fuel pressure  
is established.  
Depress the clutch pedal fully and  
start the engine without touching the  
accelerator.  
If the engine does not start within 15  
seconds, wait for a short period and  
repeat the procedure.  
If the engine does not start after  
threeattempts wait 10 seconds and  
follow the Flooded engine  
procedure.  
If starting difficulty is experienced at  
temperatures below 25 ºC, depress  
the accelerator pedal ¼ to ½ of its  
travel to assist starting.  
Flooded engine  
Depress the clutch pedal fully.  
Slowly depress the accelerator fully,  
hold it in this position and start the  
engine.  
If the engine does not start repeat  
the Cold/hot engine procedure.
