WARNING Risk of accident from overloa-
ded tires
Overloaded tires may overheat and burst as a
consequence. Overloaded tires can also
impair the steering and handling characteris-
tics and lead to brake failure.
#
Observe the load rating of the tires.
#
The load rating must be at least half the
permissible axle load of the vehicle.
#
Never overload the tires by exceeding
the maximum load.
The Tire and Loading Information placard is on the
B-pillar on the driver's side of the vehicle.

Steps for determining the correct load limit
The following steps were developed according to
the regulations of Title 49, Code of U.S. Federal
Regulations, Part 575, which are binding on all
manufacturers, and the National Trac and Motor
Vehicle Safety Act of 1966.
#
(1): Locate the statement “The combined
weight of occupants and cargo should never
exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs.” on your vehicle's
placard.
#
(2): Determine the combined weight of the
driver and passengers that will be riding in
your vehicle.
#
(3): Subtract the combined weight of the
driver and passengers from XXX kg or XXX lbs.
#
(4): The resulting gure equals the available
amount of cargo and luggage load capacity.
For example, if the "XXX" amount equals
1400 lbs. and there will be ve 150 lb pas-
sengers in your vehicle, the amount of availa-
ble cargo and luggage load capacity is
650 lbs. (1400 - 750 (5 x 150) = 650 lbs.)
#
(5): Determine the combined weight of lug-
gage and cargo being loaded on the vehicle.
That weight may not safely exceed the availa-
ble cargo and luggage load capacity calcula-
ted in Step 4.
#
(6): If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load
from your trailer will be transferred to your
vehicle. Consult this manual to determine how
this reduces the available cargo and luggage
load capacity of your vehicle.
%
Not all vehicles are permitted to tow a trailer.
Towing a trailer is only permitted if a trailer-
hitch is installed. Please consult an authorized
Mercedes-Benz dealer if you have any ques-
tions about towing a tralier with your vehicle.
Even if you have calculated the total load carefully,
you should still make sure that the maximum per-
missible gross weight and the maximum gross
axle weight rating of your vehicle are not excee-
ded. Details can be found on the vehicle identi-
cation plate.
#
Have your loaded vehicle – including driver,
occupants and load – weighed on a vehicle
weighbridge.
The measured values may not exceed the
maximum permissible values stated on the
vehicle identication plate.

Calculation example for determining the maximum
load
The following table shows examples of how to cal-
culate total and cargo load capacities with varying
seating congurations and dierent numbers and
weights of vehicle occupants. The following exam-
ples assume a maximum load of 1500 lbs
(680 kg).
This is for illustration purposes only.
Make sure you are using the actual load limit for
your vehicle stated on your vehicle's tire and load-
ing Information placard (/ page 322).
The greater the weight of all the vehicle occu-
pants, the smaller the maximum luggage load.

tion placard)

Tire quality grading
In accordance with the US Department of Trans-
portation's "Uniform Tire Quality Grading Stand-
ards," tire manufacturers are required to grade
their tires on the basis of the following three per-
formance factors:
1
Tread wear grade
2
Traction grade
3
Temperature grade
%
The data shown in the illustration is example
data.
%
The classication is not legally stipulated for
Canada, but it is generally stated.
Tread wear grade
The treadwear grade is a comparative rating
based on the wear rate of the tire when tested
under controlled conditions on a specied govern-
ment test course. For example, a tire graded 150
would wear one and one-half (1\1/2\) times as
