Notes on loading the vehicle
&
DANGER Risk of poisoning from exhaust
gases
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases, such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the tail-
gate is open when the engine is running, espe-
cially if the vehicle is in motion.
#
Always switch o the engine before
opening the tailgate.
#
Never drive with the tailgate open.
Objects in the deployment area of an airbag may
prevent the airbag from functioning correctly.
Observe the notes on airbags (/ page 112).
&
WARNING Risk of injury from unsecured
items in the vehicle
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured suciently, they could slip, tip
over or be thrown around and thereby hit vehi-
cle occupants.
There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or a sudden change
in direction.
#
Always stow objects in such a way that
they cannot be thrown around.
#
Before the journey, secure objects, lug-
gage or loads against slipping or tipping
over.
&
WARNING Risk of injury due to objects
being stowed incorrectly
If objects in the vehicle interior are stowed
incorrectly, they can slide or be thrown around
and hit vehicle occupants. In addition, cup
holders, open stowage spaces and mobile
phone brackets cannot always retain all
objects they contain.
There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of braking manoeuvres or abrupt
changes in direction.
#
Always stow objects so that they cannot
be thrown around in such situations.
#
Always make sure that objects do not
protrude from stowage spaces, luggage
nets or stowage nets.
#
Close the lockable stowage spaces
before starting a journey.
#
Stow and secure objects that are heavy,
hard, pointed, sharp-edged, fragile or too
large in the load compartment.
&
WARNING Risk of accident from objects in
the driver's footwell and front-passenger
footwell
Objects in the driver's footwell and front-
passenger footwell may impede pedal travel or
block a depressed pedal.
This jeopardises the operating and road safety
of the vehicle.
#
Stow all objects in the vehicle securely
so that they cannot get into the driver's
footwell or front-passenger footwell.

Vehicles with automatic front passenger airbag
deactivation: objects trapped under the front
passenger seat may interfere with the function of

WARNING ‑ Risk of accident or injury
when using the cup holder while the vehi-
cle is in motion
The cup holder cannot hold a container secure
while the vehicle is in motion.
If you use a cup holder while the vehicle is in
motion, the container may be ung around
and liquids could be spilled. The vehicle occu-
pants may come into contact with the liquid
and if it is hot, they could be scalded. You
could be distracted from trac conditions and
you may lose control of the vehicle.
#
Only use the cup holder when the vehicle
is stationary.
#
Only use the cup holder for containers of
the right size.
#
Always close the container, particularly if
the liquid is hot.
*
NOTE Damage to the cup holder
The cup holder can be damaged when folding
back the rear seat armrest. When open, the
cup holder can be damaged by body weight.
#
The rear seat armrest can only be folded
back when the cup holder is closed.
#
Do not sit or support yourself on the cup
holder when it is open.
*
NOTE Damage to the rear armrest due to
body weight
When folded out, the rear armrest can be
damaged by body weight.
#
Do not sit or support yourself on the rear
seat armrest.
&
WARNING Risk of burns from the tailpipe
and tailpipe trims
The exhaust tailpipe and tailpipe trims can
become very hot. If you come into contact
with these parts of the vehicle, you could burn
yourself.
#
Always be particularly careful around the
tailpipe and the tailpipe trims and super-
vise children especially closely in this
area.

NOTE Damage to the load compartment
oor caused by uneven loading or sudden
stresses
The load compartment oor can be damaged
by unevenly distributed loads or sudden
stresses.
#
Distribute the load evenly.
#
Drive with due care when the vehicle is
carrying a load. Avoid sudden starting,
braking and steering manoeuvres or fast
cornering.

Leather is a natural product. It has natural
surface properties, such as dierences in
structure, marks caused by growth and injury
or subtle colour dierences. These surface
characteristics are particular to leather, and
not material defects. Leather is also subject
to a natural ageing process which changes
the surface characteristics.
The driving characteristics of your vehicle are
dependent on the distribution of the load within
the vehicle. You should bear the following in mind
when loading the vehicle:
R
Never allow the payload including occupants
to exceed the maximum permissible gross
mass or the permissible axle loads for the
vehicle.
These are shown on the vehicle's model iden-
tication plate (/ page 756).
R
The load must not protrude above the upper
edge of the seat backrests.
R
Always use the safety net when carrying
objects in the load compartment.
R
Always place the load behind unoccupied
seats if possible.
R
Secure the load using the lashing eyelets and
distribute the tension evenly.
Notes on carrying a roof load:
R
distribute the roof load evenly and position
heavy items towards the bottom. Also observe
the notes on loading the vehicle.
R
Drive with care. Avoid sudden starting, braking
and steering manoeuvres or fast cornering.
R
When carrying a roof load or when the vehicle
is fully loaded or occupied, select driving
mode ; or A. These are congured for
good stability (/ page 269).
