Weights
The kerb weight includes the driver, the fuel tank 90% full and all fluids.
The weight of passengers and accessories, such as a towbar, towball load
(when a trailer is hitched, see table), load carriers, and roof box, influence
the payload and must not be included in the kerb weight.
Permitted weight (in addition to driver) = Gross vehicle weight - Kerb
weight.

The recommended transmission fluid must be used to prevent damage to the gearbox. Do not mix with any other
transmission fluid. If the transmission is topped up with a different fluid, contact an authorised Volvo workshop for servicing.

Capacities
The oil grade requirement must be fulfilled even
if a different viscosity is chosen.
Important!
Always use oil of the recommended grade
and correct viscosity.
Never use oil additives. These can damage
the engine.
If the system is topped up with a different
oil, contact the nearest Volvo workshop for
servicing.
Using oil of a different grade than recom-
mended by Volvo could generate increased
wear and engine damaged that is not covered
by the Volvo warranty.

If a different viscosity than that listed in this table is selected following the information in the diagram, the engine grade requirement must be fulfilled.
Extreme driving conditions
Check the oil more often in extreme driving
conditions such as alpine driving with a great
deal of engine braking or motorway driving at
high speed. These conditions can cause
abnormally high oil temperatures and oil
consumption.
Petrol engines: For extreme conditions, choose
a fully synthetic engine oil to provide extra
protection.
Volvo recommends Castrol® oil products.

Fuel
Specified fuel consumption
Official fuel consumption figures are based on
a standard driving cycle in accordance with EU
Directive 80/1268 comb. Fuel consumption
figures may change if the car is equipped with
extra equipment that affects the car’s weight.
The manner in which the car is driven and other
non-technical factors can affect fuel consump-
tion.
Consumption is higher and power output lower
for fuel with an octane rating of 91 RON.
Important!
Refuel with correct petrol!
Your car has a catalytic converter. Only drive
with unleaded petrol so as not to damage the
catalytic converter.
Recommended fuel grade
Petrol
The engine can be run with octane ratings of
91, 95 and 98 RON.
When driving in temperatures above +38 ºC,
use of fuel with the highest possible octane
rating is recommended for optimum performan-
ce and fuel economy.
· 98 RON is recommended for maximum
effect and minimum fuel consumption.
· 95 RON can be used for normal driving.
· 91 RON must not be used in 4-cylinder
engines and, in general, should only be used
as an exception. However, the engine will
not be damaged by this fuel grade.
Petrol: Standard EN 228
Important!
Diesel fuels not to be used: special additives,
Marine Diesel Fuel, fuel oil, RME (Rape
Methyl Ester), vegetable oil.
These fuels do not fulfil the requirements of
EM 590 and generate increased wear and
engine damage that is not covered by the
Volvo warranty.
Diesel
Diesel: Standard EN 590
JIS K2204 or similar

Catalytic converter and suspension
Catalytic converter
The purpose of the catalytic converter is to
purify exhaust. It is located in the exhaust flow
near the engine to quickly reach operating
temperature.
The catalytic converter consists of a monolith
(ceramic or metal) with channels. The channel
walls are coated with a thin layer of platinum,
rhodium and palladium. The metals act as
catalysts, i.e. they accelerate the chemical
process without being used up themselves.
Lambda-sond
TM
Heated oxygen sensor
The lambda sensor is part of a management
system intended to reduce emissions and
improve fuel economy. An oxygen sensor
monitors the oxygen content of the exhaust
gases leaving the engine. These values are fed
into an electronic system that continuously
controls the injectors. The ratio of air to fuel is
continuously adjusted. These adjustments create
optimal conditions for efficient combustion, and
together with the three-way catalytic converter
reduce harmful emissions (hydrocarbons,
carbon monoxide and nitrous oxides).
Wheel suspension, springing
Front end
McPherson type spring strut. Unitary construc-
tion of shock absorbers and spring. Rack and
pinion steering. Safety type steering shaft. The
values apply to an unladen car with full tank,
coolant and spare wheel.
Rear suspension
Independent suspension with individually
sprung wheels with shock absorbers. The
suspension consists of rear-facing trailer arms,
upper and lower control arms, track rods and
anti-roll bar.

Electrical system
General
12-volt system with voltage regulated alterna-
ting current generator. Single pole system in
which the chassis and engine block are used as
conductors. The negative pole is connected to
the chassis. The car is equipped with an extra
ground lead to reduce the magnetic fields.
