Starting and driving -> Overload - starter battery for Your Volvo Xc70 SUV Second Generation (2008-2016)

08 Starting and driving
stop the car in a safe way and allow the
engine to run at idling speed for a few
minutes in order to allow the gearbox to
cool down.
Driving with open tailgate/boot lid
Overload - starter battery
When driving with the tailgate open, toxic
exhaust fumes can be sucked into the car
through the cargo area.
The electrical functions in the car load the
starter battery (p. 369) to varying degrees.
Avoid using the key position II (p. 84) when
the engine is switched off. Instead use posi-
tion I - which uses less power.
If the car overheats, the air conditioning
may be switched off temporarily.
WARNING
Do not turn the engine off immediately
you stop after a hard drive.
Do not drive with an open tailgate! Toxic
exhaust fumes could be drawn into the car
through the cargo area.
Also, be aware of different accessories that
load the electrical system. Do not use func-
tions which use a lot of power when the
engine is switched off. Examples of such
functions are:

It is normal for the engine's cooling fan to
operate for a time after the engine has
been switched off.
ventilation fan

audio system (high volume).
If the starter battery voltage is low then the
combined instrument panel's information dis-
play shows the text Low battery charge
Power save mode. The energy-saving func-
tion then shuts down certain functions or
reduces certain functions such as the ventila-
tion fan and/or audio system.
In which case, charge the starter battery
by starting the engine and then running it
for at least 15 minutes - starter battery
charging is more effective during driving
than running the engine at idling speed
while stationary.
