Automatic deactivation of Rear Traffic Alert Â
The radar sensors for the Rear Traffic Alert turn off Â
automatically if the system detects an obstruction Â
over a radar sensor. This could occur if the radar Â
sensor area is covered by ice or snow, for example. Â
— OR: Press the driver assistance systems button on Â
the multi-function steering wheel to open the As- Â
sist systems menu → page 25, Driver assistance sys- Â
tems button. Â
A text message appears in the instrument cluster Â
display when the system turns off automatically. Â

WARNING Â
The Rear Traffic Alert system uses the radar sensors Â
in the rear bumper to monitor the traffic crossing Â
behind your vehicle when you are backing out of Â
a parking space or maneuvering, for example, in Â
traffic situations with poor visibility → fig. 124. Â
The Rear Traffic Alert technology cannot overcome Â
the laws of physics and limits of the system. Care- Â
less or unintentional use of the Rear Traffic Alert Â
may result in accidents and serious injuries. Â
The Rear Traffic Alert is not a substitute for Â
careful and attentive driving. Â

Never use the system when visibility is limited Â
·
or in complex traffic situations, for example, on Â
heavily traveled roads or when there are multi- Â
ple lanes. Â
The yellow area indicates that the system has Â
possibly detected traffic behind the vehicle. Â
Always watch for people, especially small chil- Â

dren, bicycles, animals, and objects, because the Â
Rear Traffic Alert may not always be able to de- Â
tect them. Rear Traffic Alert cannot detect peo- Â
ple, animals, and things that are moving slowly Â
or not at all. Â
— Vehicles without Park Distance Control (PDC): Â
There is a warning tone and a text message in the Â
instrument cluster display. Â
The Rear Traffic Alert does not always brake the Â
vehicle to a complete stop. Â
·
— Vehicles with Park Distance Control (PDC): There Â
is a continuous warning tone from the PDC. If Â
PDC is switched off, a warning for the driver may Â
not be possible, and therefore the Rear Traffic Â
Alert is also deactivated. Â
The harsh automatic braking will be uncomfort- Â
·
able for many people, and if you or your passen- Â
gers have special conditions or sensitivities, par- Â
ticularly in the neck, you may want to switch off Â
Rear Traffic Alert. Â
If there is a system malfunction in the scanned area, Â
a yellow indicator light appears. Â

Automatic braking Â
The radar sensors in the rear bumper can be dam- Â

If Rear Traffic Alert detects an approaching vehicle Â
and the driver does not press the brake pedal, the Â
system can intervene with automatic braking. Â
aged or become misaligned in low-speed impacts Â
and parking maneuvers. The system can switch it- Â
self off or may be impaired as a result. Â
Rear Traffic Alert assists the driver with harsh auto- Â
matic braking that could help prevent or reduce Â
damage that can result from a collision. Automatic Â
braking occurs while backing up at speeds between Â
1–7 mph (1–12 km/h). Once the system detects that Â
your vehicle is not moving, it keeps the vehicle from Â
moving for up to 2 seconds. Â
Always keep the rear bumper clean and free of Â
snow and ice so that the radar sensors can work Â
properly. Do not cover the radar sensor area. Â
·
The rear bumper may only be painted with vehicle Â
·
paint that is approved by Volkswagen. Other Â
paints may make the Rear Traffic Alert system Â
work improperly or cause it to malfunction. Â
After automatic braking, about 10 seconds must Â
pass before the system can brake automatically Â
again. Â

States FCC and Industry Canada regulations is Â

communications and Electronic Systems. Â
The driver can interrupt the automatic braking and Â
take control of the vehicle by pressing firmly on the Â
accelerator or brake pedal. Â
