WARNING
Accidents and severe personal injuries can result if you unlock,
open, or close the luggage compartment lid when someone is
in the way.
Only open or close the luggage compartment lid if no one is
in the way.
After closing the luggage compartment lid, always make sure
that it is properly closed and locked so that it cannot open sud-
denly when the vehicle is moving. The closed luggage com-
partment lid must be flush with the surrounding auto body
parts.
Always keep the luggage compartment lid closed while driv-
ing to help keep poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into
the vehicle.
Never open the luggage compartment lid when a luggage
rack is installed and loaded. If, for example, there are bicycles
on a carrier on the luggage compartment lid, it is possible that
the lid will not be able to open automatically. An open luggage
compartment lid may fall on its own because of the additional
weight. If necessary, prop open the luggage compartment lid.
Remove the weight from the luggage rack first.
Close and lock the luggage compartment lid and all doors
when the vehicle is not in use. First, make sure that no one is
left inside the vehicle.
Never leave your vehicle unattended or let children play
around your vehicle, especially when the luggage compartment
lid is open. A child could crawl into the vehicle and pull the
luggage compartment lid shut, becoming trapped and unable to
get out. A closed vehicle can become very hot or very cold, de-
pending on the season. Particularly in the summer, heat
buildup in the passenger and luggage compartment of a parked
vehicle can result in temperatures in the vehicle that are much
higher than the outside temperatures. Temperatures can quick-
ly reach levels that can cause unconsciousness and death, par-
ticularly to small children.
Never leave children or anyone who cannot help themselves
behind in the vehicle. They may lock the vehicle with the vehi-
cle key or the power locking button and lock themselves in.
NOTICE
Before opening or closing the luggage compartment lid, make
sure there is enough room to do so, for example, when the vehi-
cle has a trailer or is in a garage.
NOTICE
Never use the gas strut to hold or clamp a load in place. This can
damage the luggage compartment lid and make it impossible to
close.

When the ignition is switched on, several warning and indicator lights
come on briefly for a function check. They go out after a few seconds.
If the luggage compartment lid is not closed properly, the vehicle icon
appears in the instrument cluster display showing an open luggage
compartment lid fig. 10, fig. 11.
Depending on your vehicle's equipment and options, the icon may still
be displayed even after the ignition is switched off as long as the key
has not been taken out of the ignition. The icon in the instrument clus-
ter display goes out about 15 seconds after the vehicle has been
locked.
WARNING
If the luggage compartment lid is not closed properly, it may
open suddenly when the vehicle is moving and cause severe
injuries.
Stop immediately and close the luggage compartment lid.

compartment lid opener (Easy Open)
If your vehicle has Keyless Access, it may also be equipped with the
Easy Open feature. With Easy Open, the luggage compartment lid
can be opened with a motion sensor in the area below the rear
bumper Sensor-controlled luggage compartment lid opener (Easy
Open).

gage compartment lid when someone is in the way.
If a bicycle or luggage rack is installed on the luggage com-
partment lid, it may be hard to see that the luggage compart-
ment lid is unlatched. An unlatched luggage compartment lid
may open suddenly when the vehicle is moving.

Closing the luggage compartment lid
Grasp one of the recessed grips in the trim of the luggage com-
partment lid fig. 37 (arrows).
Pull the luggage compartment lid down and close it securely so that
the latch engages.
Check the luggage compartment lid to make sure it is securely
latched.
Locking the luggage compartment lid
If you unlock the vehicle with the vehicle key, but do not open either a
door or the luggage compartment lid in about the next 30 seconds,
the vehicle is automatically locked again. This feature helps prevent
you from leaving the vehicle unlocked unintentionally.
It is only possible to lock the luggage compartment lid when it is se-
curely closed and latched.
The power locking system also locks the luggage compartment lid.
If the luggage compartment lid of a locked vehicle is unlocked with
the q button on the remote control vehicle key, it will lock about
20 seconds after it is closed. The anti-theft alarm system is activated
after the vehicle is locked
A closed but unlocked luggage compartment lid automatically locks
at speeds above about 5 mph (10 km/h).
The luggage compartment lid can also be locked manually with the
emergency key via the key switch in the driver door Driver door
overview. When the luggage compartment lid has been locked manu-
ally with the emergency key, it cannot be opened using the q button
on the remote control vehicle key or the q switch inside the driver
door.
WARNING
Improper or unsupervised closing of the luggage compartment
lid can cause severe injuries. Never close the luggage com-
partment lid when someone is in the way.
Never leave your vehicle unattended or let children play
around your vehicle, especially with the luggage compartment
lid left open. A child could crawl into the vehicle and pull the
luggage compartment lid shut, becoming trapped and unable to
get out. A closed vehicle can become very hot or very cold de-
pending on the season. Temperatures can quickly reach levels
that can cause unconsciousness or death, particularly to small
children.
Make sure that the remote control vehicle key is not in the lug-
gage compartment before closing the luggage compartment lid.

heed the WARNINGS
If your vehicle has Keyless Access, it may also be equipped with the
Easy Open feature.
When a valid vehicle key is within range of the luggage compartment
lid fig. 27, the luggage compartment lid can be unlocked and
opened by moving your foot within the sensor’s range fig. 38 below
the rear bumper.
Switch off the ignition.
Stand behind the middle of the rear bumper.
Quickly move your foot and shin as close to the bumper as possi-
ble. Your shin must be in the upper part of the sensor’s range and
your foot in the lower part fig. 38 (1).
Quickly move your shin out of range fig. 38 (2). The luggage
compartment lid opens automatically.
If the luggage compartment lid does not open, wait a few seconds
and try again.
The high-mounted brake light flashes once to show that the Easy
Open feature is opening the luggage compartment lid.
The luggage compartment lid locks automatically after closing if the
vehicle was locked before and a valid vehicle key is not inside the
vehicle.
Easy Open may not work properly or at all in the following situations
(examples):
If the rear bumper is very dirty.
If the rear bumper has salty water on it after driving on salted
roads.
If a trailer hitch has been retrofit on the vehicle.
Easy Open may be automatically deactivated in heavy rain to help
prevent unintentional deployment caused by water running down the
vehicle, for example.
The Easy Open feature may be turned on and off in the Settings –
Convenience menu Volkswagen Information System.
WARNING
Careless use of the Easy Open feature can cause falls and seri-
ous personal injury.
Always make sure you have firm footing when using the Easy
Open feature, and that the surface you are standing on is not
uneven or slippery.
Never use Easy Open feature unless you can use it safely.
CAUTION
If a valid vehicle key is within range of the luggage compart-
ment lid, the Easy Open feature can deploy unintentionally in
some cases and open the luggage compartment lid: for exam-
ple, when sweeping the ground or floor below the rear bumper,
if there is a strong stream of water or steam, or when carrying
out maintenance or repairs around the rear bumper. If the lug-
gage compartment lid opens unintentionally, it can injure any-
one or damage anything in its way.
Never leave a valid vehicle key within range of the luggage
compartment lid unattended.
Always turn off the Easy Open feature through the
Volkswagen Information System Volkswagen Information
System in the following situations:
– Before carrying out any maintenance or repairs on the ve-
hicle.
– Before washing the vehicle.
– Before mounting a bicycle rack or connecting a trailer hitch
to the vehicle.
