Body for Your Volkswagen Phaeton 4 Door First Generation (2002-2016)

Body
Body Structure
The focus of the body design was a high
level of crash safety and body rigidity. The
gap dimensions for the hood, luggage
compartment lid, and doors could be
designed to be relatively narrow due to the
high rigidity of the main body structure.
Static Rigidity
The extremely high static rigidity of the
body structure is a prerequisite for:
• Optimal chassis design based on an
almost complete lack of inherent
movement within the body structure.
The doors, luggage compartment lid, and
hood are made of aluminum. The front
fenders, and the front and rear bumpers are
made of plastic. This limits mass while still
observing high safety standards and
comfort requirements.
• Excellent door, hood, and luggage
compartment lid function with the
narrowest possible gap dimensions.
The main body structure consists of
high-grade and super high-strength
steels and is completely galvanized for
corrosion protection.

Safety Features
• The relatively soft external bodywork
areas are designed to help reduce the
severity of injuries to other parties
involved in an accident.
• High energy absorption at the front and
rear of the vehicle.
• Stable passenger compartment.
• High-grade and super high-strength steel
is used in critical areas.
• Occupant protection in event of side
impact due to:
Dynam ic Rigidity
— Bonding of the super high-strength
steel B-pillar with the side member.
The high dynamic rigidity of the body
structure is a prerequisite for:
— High-strength aluminum profiles in
the doors.
• Advantageous vibration characteristics
that reduce sensed vibration.
• Reduced movement of interior
panels that results in an overall
reduction of noise levels in the
passenger compartment.
These characteristics combine to provide
greater comfort for vehicle occupants.

Sound Silencers
Sound deadening was a major design issue
when developing the body-in-white. Along
with the dynamic rigidity of the body
structure itself, the consistent use of sound
absorption materials in the engine
compartment, tunnel, luggage
compartment, and behind body panels has
reduced interior noise to significantly lower
levels than is normally achieved.

Glass
High-Insulation Lam inated Glass
The high-insulation laminated glass used on
the Phaeton reflects heat without reducing
its ability to pass light through.
This glass reduces ultraviolet radiation and
contributes to an improved noise insulation.
This is facilitated by two foils incorporated
into the glass.
The rear and side windows are also
manufactured with thermally-tempered
laminated glass with an infrared reflective
coating. This improves occupant safety
because the safety foils incorporated into
the laminated glass panes prevent it from
shattering on impact.

Heating Duration of Heated Glass
The rear window is heated by nearly
invisible tungsten threads that are
In order not to overload the electrical
system, the heating duration of heated
glass depends on the ambient outside air
temperature:
embedded between the inner and outer
pane. All antennas are integrated in the
upper third of the rear window. This lack of
external antennas helps to maintain the
streamlined quality of the Phaeton.

Pow er-Assisted Luggage
Com partm ent Lid
The Phaeton is also available with a
system allowing the driver to open and
close the luggage compartment lid from
inside the vehicle.
Power-assisted closure is not only a
convenience but is also an enhancement
of the entire locking system.
Retractable rear lock w ith closing aid
The luggage compartment lock is retracted
when the lid is opened, reducing the risk of
injury. The retraction of the lock also
prevents the soiling of clothing by contact
with any oil or grease that may be present
in the lock.
When the luggage compartment lid is
closing, the lock emerges from the lid into
locking position during the final third of the
closing cycle. Then the lock pulls the lid
down the rest of the way and locks it.

Function
Closing
The power-assisted luggage compartment
lid is operated by an electro-hydraulic
mechanism. Hydraulic fluid is pumped
through the hydraulic lines by an
electric pump.
The Rear Lid Lock Button (in Luggage
Compartment) E406 in the luggage
compartment lid is used to close the lid.
Safety Features
The power-assisted closing system has a
pinch protection feature. If the Rear Lid
Hydraulic Motor V241 perceives resistance
which exceeds a defined level, power-
assisted closure is not merely stopped but
reversed a little in order to release the
jammed object.
The routing of hydraulic fluid to the piston
crown sides or piston rod sides of the
hydraulic cylinders facilitates the opening or
closing of the luggage compartment lid
with a driving shaft at each hinge.
The pump is located on the right side of the
luggage compartment.
A similar feature is employed during
opening. For example, if the luggage
compartment lid hits a low garage ceiling,
the Rear Lid Hydraulic Motor V241 stops
for a moment. The lid remains in this
stopped position without reversing. At this
point, actuation is required to close the lid
or to continue the opening cycle after the
obstacle has been cleared.
Opening
To open the luggage compartment lid,
operate either the switch in the door panel,
the microswitch in the VW emblem on the
luggage compartment lid, or the radio
remote control.

Sunroof
The Phaeton is available with a tilt
and slide sunroof with a separate
electrically-actuated sunshade.
Tilt and Slide Sunroof
The tilt and slide sunroof has a sunshade
and an electric wind deflector. A separate
electric motor moves the sunshade at
the same time as the glass roof is opened
or closed. The sunshade can also be
adjusted regardless of the position of the
sunroof glass.
The closing cycle is electronically monitored
and has a pinch protection feature.
Depending on the driving speed and the
sunroof opening, the wind deflector is
controlled electro-mechanically to prevent
wind noise and drafts.
