Occupant Protection
Seat Belt System s
All seats on the Phaeton have three-point
retracting seat belts with belt tension
limiters. All outside seats are equipped with
pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners that are
triggered by the Airbag Control Module
J234 if the accident is bad enough.

Com fort Mechanism
A force greater than that used in
conventional belt buckles is required for the
automatic seat belt roller to retract the
compound insertion tongue into its starting
position in the double retractor system on
the 18-position seat. However, in order not
to transmit this force to the vehicle
occupants, a comfort mechanism in the
automatic shoulder belt is used which can
vary the force exerted on the belt.
The 18-position seat version is also
available with an optional belt system that
is equipped with an additional automatic lap
belt. This extra automatic lap belt is
attached to the side of the seat. In
conjunction with the automatic shoulder
belt, it facilitates the simultaneous
tightening of the belt in the occupants’
shoulder and lap areas.
If a seat is recognized by a buckle check as
occupied, the mechanism reduces the
force in the automatic shoulder belt when it
is being used. This prevents the belt from
exerting too much pressure on the
occupant’s upper body. When the comfort
mechanism is released during a crash, the
full restraining force is applied to the belt
for maximum effectiveness.
