Chains that have direct contact with the rim
could scratch or damage the rim. Volkswagen
recommends the use of chains with integrated
rim protection.

The caps protect the wheel bolts and must be
refitted as far as possible after changing the wheel.
Hubcaps
Removing and fitting the hoods
Remove: Remove the wire hook from the on-
board tools p. 293.
Introduction to the topic
Insert the wire hook into the hole in the cap
fig. 263 and pull in the direction of the
arrow.
Fitting: Fit the caps onto the wheel bolts as
far as they will go.
If unsuitable hubcaps are used or incorrectly
mounted, serious accidents and injuries can
occur.
The anti-theft wheel bolt has a different cap.
This cap is only compatible with the anti-theft
wheel bolt and is not suitable for the
conventional screws.
Incorrectly fitted hubcaps could come off
while driving and endanger other road
users.
Do not use damaged hubcaps.
Always ensure that the brake ventilation is
not interrupted or reduced. Also take this
into account when retrofitting brake hoses.
Inadequate ventilation could lead to a

Introduction to the topic
Some vehicles come from the factory without a
jack and wheel spanner. In this case, have the
wheel replaced by

The factory-fitted jack is only designed to be
used in the event of damage to one tyre on the
vehicle and needs to be replaced. If both tyres
on one side of the vehicle, both tyres on one
axle or all tyres are damaged, call for specialist
help.

especially if it is done at the edge of the
road. To reduce the risk of serious injury, be
aware of the following:
In preparation for changing a wheel, always
the order
carry out the following operations in
given →
:
1. In the event of a tyre failure, if possible,
place the vehicle on level, firm ground at a
safe distance from road traffic.
Stop the vehicle as soon as it is possible
and safe to do so. Position the vehicle at a
safe distance from road traffic so that the
wheel can be changed.
2. Switch on the electric parking brake p.
229.
When changing the wheel, all persons,
especially children, must always stand at a
safe distance away from the working area.
3. Move the selector lever to the P position.

other road users.
5. Activate the vehicle lift mode
Make sure that the ground is level and
firm. If necessary, use a wide, solid base
to support the jack.
6. Remove all occupants from the vehicle and
take them to a safe place away from road
traffic.
Only change a wheel yourself if you are
familiar with the necessary operations. If
you do not know how to change a wheel
yourself, seek the assistance of qualified
personnel.
7. Block the diagonally opposite wheel with the
two folding wheel chocks from the on-
board tools p. 293 or other suitable
objects.
When changing a wheel, always use
suitable and undamaged tools.
8. If a trailer is being towed, unhitch the trailer
from the towing vehicle and park it page
278.
To reduce the risk of the vehicle moving
accidentally, always switch off the engine,
engage the electronic parking brake and
move the selector lever to the P position.
9. If the luggage compartment is loaded,
remove all luggage.
After changing a wheel, have the wheel bolts
checked immediately for tightening torque
with a fully functional torque spanner.
10. Remove the spare wheel (conventional or
inflatable) and on-board tools from the
luggage compartment.
On vehicles equipped with the tyre
monitoring system, the system must be
readjusted immediately after changing a
wheel page 336.
11. Remove the hub cap page 355.
For your own safety, do not ignore this
important checklist, otherwise serious accidents
and injuries may occur.
Always follow the instructions in the
checklist and observe the generally
applicable safety measures.

Two-piece wheel bolts
WARNING
Two-piece wheel bolts must be used for this
vehicle. In the case of two-piece wheel bolts,
the ball collar is not fixed to the head.
If the wheel bolts are improperly tightened,
they could come loose while driving and cause
an accident, serious injury and loss of control
of the vehicle.
Loosen the wheel bolts
Only use wheel bolts that correspond to the
wheel rim in question.
Insert the wheel spanner into the screw as
far as it will go fig. 265.
Never use different wheel bolts.

Tightening torque of wheel bolts
Prescribed tightening torque for steel and light
alloy wheel rim bolts:
Never loosen the threaded joints of rims
with bolted rings.
180 Nm
If the wheel bolts are tightened to a torque
lower than the prescribed torque, the bolts
and rims could come loose while riding.
On the other hand, over-tightening the
wheel bolts could damage the bolts or the
thread.
Before checking the tightening torque, replace
any rusted wheel bolts that are difficult to
unscrew and tighten and clean the wheel bolts.

After changing a wheel, have the tightening
torque checked immediately with a fully
functioning torque spanner.

Wheel bolt tightening torque
Prescribed tightening torque for bolts on steel and light-
alloy wheels:
• Never loosen the screw connections on rims with bolt-
on rims.
180Nm
• If the wheel bolts are tightened below the prescribed
torque, the bolts and the rims could come loose while
driving. Conversely, excessive tightening torque could
damage the screws or the thread.
Before the tightening torque check, replace the wheel bolts
that are rusty and difficult to unscrew and screw in, and
clean the threaded holes of the wheel hub.
ÿ
Never apply grease or oil to the wheel bolts or threaded
holes in the wheel hub.
After changing a wheel, have the torque checked
immediately with a fully functioning torque wrench
