The factory-fitted jack is only designed to be
used in the event of damage to one tyre on the
vehicle and needs to be replaced. If both tyres
on one side of the vehicle, both tyres on one
axle or all tyres are damaged, call for specialist
help.
Steps prior to changing a wheel

Changing a wheel can be dangerous,
especially if it is done at the edge of the
road. To reduce the risk of serious injury, be
aware of the following:
In preparation for changing a wheel, always

1. In the event of a tyre failure, if possible,
place the vehicle on level, firm ground at a
safe distance from road traffic.
● Stop the vehicle as soon as it is possible
and safe to do so. Position the vehicle at a
safe distance from road traffic so that the
wheel can be changed.

especially children, must always stand at a

4. Switch off the engine and remove the key

5. Activate the vehicle lift mode
● Make sure that the ground is level and
firm. If necessary, use a wide, solid base
to support the jack.
6. Remove all occupants from the vehicle and
take them to a safe place away from road
traffic.
● Only change a wheel yourself if you are
familiar with the necessary operations. If
you do not know how to change a wheel
yourself, seek the assistance of qualified
personnel.
7. Block the diagonally opposite wheel with the
two folding wheel chocks from the on-
board tools → p. 293 or other suitable
objects.
● When changing a wheel, always use
suitable and undamaged tools.
8. If a trailer is being towed, unhitch the trailer
from the towing vehicle and park it → page
278.
● To reduce the risk of the vehicle moving
accidentally, always switch off the engine,
engage the electronic parking brake and
move the selector lever to the P position.
9. If the luggage compartment is loaded,
remove all luggage.
● After changing a wheel, have the wheel bolts
checked immediately for tightening torque
with a fully functional torque spanner.
10. Remove the spare wheel (conventional or
inflatable) and on-board tools from the
luggage compartment.
● On vehicles equipped with the tyre
monitoring system, the system must be
readjusted immediately after changing a
wheel → page 336.
