Wheels and tyres -> Tyre control system for Your Volkswagen Touareg SUV Third Generation (2018-2025)

The first time you drive at high speed with
new tyres, you may find that it's a bit of a
challenge.

Tyre control system
The air pressure warning is a warning that the
air pressure will be reduced to a minimum and,
as a result, a warning about air pressure will
occur.

Tyres older than 6 years
In the case of vehicles with the tyre pressure

Tyres age due to physical and chemical
processes and their function may be adversely
affected. Tyres that are stored for long periods
of time without being used age earlier than
tyres that are used permanently.
If you wish to replace the factory-fitted wheels,
make sure that the new wheels are equipped
with sensors that are compatible with the tyre
pressure monitoring system p. 336. To
enable the system to detect the new wheels,
drive at speeds above 25 km/h (15 mph) for
some time.
Volkswagen recommends having tyres that are
more than 6 years old replaced with new tyres.
This also applies to tyres that look as if they can
still be used on the outside and whose profile
has not yet reached the legally prescribed
minimum value.

The snow chains must be fitted to the
inflatable spare tyre. Therefore, if chains are
necessary and one of the front wheels is

Tyre markings appear on both sides of the tyre.
Some of the information may be on only one
side of the tyre, e.g. the tyre identification
number and the date of manufacture.
Asymmetric tyres
Asymmetric tyres take into account the
behaviour of the inner and outer areas of the
tread pattern. In the case of asymmetric tyres,
the sidewalls of the tyres are marked as inner or
outer. The position of the tyre on the rim must
be observed.
If other numbers appear on the tyre, these
may be internal markings of the tyre
manufacturer or specific markings for certain
countries.
Tyre load capacity
Low profile tyres
The load index indicates in kilograms the
maximum weight the tyre can carry (load
capacity).
Low-profile tyres offer, in comparison to other
rim/tyre combinations, a wider tread and a
larger rim diameter with a low tyre tread
height.

Tyres subject to unidirectional rolling
The sidewalls of one-way tyres are marked with
arrows. The direction of rotation indicated must
be observed. This ensures optimum running
characteristics.
If you still mount a tyre in the wrong direction
of rotation, drive with extreme caution, as you

Load capacity and speed range of
tyres
Please note at the beginning of this chapter
on page 339.
Winter and all-weather tyres largely lose their
winter suitability when the profile has been
reduced to 4 mm.
Vehicles from the European Union and from
countries that apply European Union standards
are issued with an EC certificate of conformity
(or COC). The EC certificate of conformity
contains information on the size, diameter, load
capacity and speed range of the tyres approved
by Volkswagen for the respective vehicle type.
The following applies when using winter
tyres:
Please note the relevant legal provisions in
the country concerned.
Fit winter tyres on all four wheels.
Use only in winter weather conditions.
You can tell from the type plate whether the
vehicle has an EC certificate of conformity. The
type plate is located on the underside of the
driver's door pillar p. 388. It can be seen by
opening the driver's door.
Use only tyres with the dimensions
approved for this vehicle.
Only fit winter tyres with the same
construction, the same size and the same
profile type.
If the type plate bears the type-approval
mark, the vehicle has an EC certificate of
conformity.

In the case of winter tyres with the V-index, the

maximum permissible speed limit and the
required tyre pressure.

However, Volkswagen recommends using
winter or all-weather tyres on all four wheels in

WARNING
Do not let the fact that winter tyres improve
handling properties in winter road conditions
induce you to take safety risks.
Volkswagen recommends that you obtain
information about the correct tyre, wheel and
snow chain sizes from your Volkswagen dealer.
Adapt speed and driving style to visibility,
weather, road and traffic conditions.
As far as possible, use chains of thin strands that
do not protrude beyond the top of the chain.

Never exceed the maximum speed and
load capacity permitted for the winter tyres
fitted.

Before installing the chains, remove the
caps
and the hub rings →

For safety reasons,
however,
the caps must be attached to the bolts.
These caps are available from Volkswagen
dealers.
After winter, fit summer tyres as soon as
possible. At temperatures
above +7 °C (+45 °F), the driving properties of
summer tyres are better than those of winter
tyres. Rolling noise, tyre wear and fuel
consumption are lower.

In the event of a front wheel failure, fit the
inflatable spare wheel on the rear axle.
After changing the wheels p. 336, the
system must be repaired again.

wheel on the rear axle that has been freed.
When doing so, pay attention to the direction
of rotation of the tyre.
Please ask your Volkswagen dealer about
the permissible tyre dimensions.

WARNING
The use of unsuitable snow chains or the
incorrect fitting of chains can lead to
accidents and serious injuries.
When using snow chains, observe the legal and
local regulations as well as the maximum
permissible speed when using snow chains.
Always use suitable snow chains.
Observe the chain manufacturer's
installation instructions.
In the event of ice or snow on the road, the
sprockets not only improve traction, but also
braking behaviour.
Never drive faster than permitted when
chains are fitted.
