Cruise control system

Description

Applies to: vehicles with cruise control system

The cruise control system assists you in main-

taining a constant speed above approximately

15 mph (20 km/h). The system maintains the de-

sired speed by braking and accelerating.

Turning on the system

Applies to: vehicles with cruise control system

WARNING

and cameras ðpage 127 to ðpage 130.

– The cruise control system is only an assist

system, and the driver is still responsible for

operating the vehicle. The driver is especial-

ly responsible for braking, controlling the

speed, and maintaining the distance to oth-

er vehicles.

Before driving downhill a long distance on a

steep hill, decrease your speed and select a

lower gear. This makes use of the engine

braking effect and reduces the load placed on

the brakes.

Preselecting or activating a cruise control

speed

Display overview

Applies to: vehicles with cruise control system

When the vehicle is stationary, you can preselect

the speed to be maintained, or you can select the

speed while driving.

Indicator lights and messages in the speedome-

ter inform you about the driving situation and

the settings. The displays depend on the country

and equipment.

Requirement: the system must be turned on.

Overriding or deactivating the cruise

control speed

If  or  is displayed when there is a mal-

function, the cruise control system functions may

be unavailable or limited.

Applies to: vehicles with cruise control system

You can override or deactivate the cruise control

system. When you deactivate the system, your

cruise control speed will be stored and you can

resume that speed.

A message that indicates the cause and possible

solution may appear with some displays. The

weather conditions may be too poor or a sensor

may be obstructed. Clean the area in front of the

sensors ðpage 129 and try to turn the system on

again later.

Requirement: the system must be turned on and

the set cruise control speed must be activated.

If the malfunction remains, drive to an author-

ized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili-

ty immediately to have the malfunction correct-

ed.

Overriding

►

To temporarily override the set cruise control

speed, press the accelerator pedal.

►

To resume the stored regulated speed, remove

your foot from the accelerator pedal.

Efficiency assist

If you override the cruise control system for a

long period of time, the cruise control system

will be deactivated.

Description

Applies to: vehicles with efficiency assist

Efficiency assist can assist with predictive infor-

mation in order to reduce fuel consumption. De-

pending on vehicle equipment, the system may

access data from the navigation system, the cam-

era behind the windshield, and the radar sensors.

Deactivating

To deactivate the cruise control speed, press

the lever to position 3 (not locked into place)

Adjusting the efficiency assist

WARNING

You can adjust efficiency assist functions individ-

ually. The settings depend on the vehicle equip-

Situation symbols

– The functions depend on the navigation da-

ta* being up-to-date and correct identifica-

tion by the traffic sign recognition*.

– The system only detects traffic signs that

specify a speed limit.

Depending on the equipment version, efficiency

assist can use the following symbols to indicate

the situation to which the system is responding.

Depending on the equipment version, some of

the symbols can only be displayed in the Driver

assistance display to clarify to which situation

the system is responding.

– The display in the instrument cluster is

based on the units of measurement used for

speed in the country where the vehicle is be-

ing operated. As a result, a display of 50 in

the instrument cluster can mean either mph

or km/h, depending on the country.

– Aside from the road network, which is re-

corded in the navigation system’s map infor-

mation, certain functions may not be availa-

ble.

Some symbols only appear if Predictive messag-

es are turned on, and some symbols only appear

if Predictive control is turned on and Audi adap-

tive cruise control* is actively regulating the vehi-

cle.

In stop-and-go traffic, the vehicle may brake to a

full stop and then may also start driving again

automatically under certain conditions

fic jams or in stop-and-go traffic, the traffic jam

assist can assist in staying within the lane detect-

ed by the system ðpage 151.

Tips

– The traffic signs on the road always take pri-

ority over the display. The driver is always

responsible for adhering to the regulations

applicable in the country where the vehicle

is being operated.

Applies to: vehicles with predictive control: Pre-

dictive control can adjust the set speed based on

traffic and road conditions ðpage 147.

WARNING

– When a route is planned using the naviga-

tion system*, then system displays messag-

es based on an assumed route. Without

route guidance, the system displays mes-

sages based on an assumed route.

Audi adaptive cruise

control

General information

Applies to: vehicles with Audi adaptive cruise control

Depending on vehicle equipment, Audi adaptive

cruise control may consist of the following func-

tions:

Within the limitations of the system, the adap-

tive speed and distance control assists while

driving in controlling the speed and keeping the

set distance to the vehicle traveling ahead. If the

system detects a vehicle traveling ahead, the

adaptive cruise control can brake and accelerate

your vehicle within the limitations of the system.

On open roads with no traffic, it functions like a

cruise control system. The stored speed is main-

tained. When approaching a vehicle traveling

ahead, the adaptive cruise control system auto-

matically brakes to match that vehicle's speed

and then maintains the set distance as much as

possible. As soon as the system does not detect a

In some situations, the adaptive cruise control

function is limited and you must assume control

of the vehicle when necessary, for example by ap-

plying the brakes.

– When driving into a curve ðfig. 109 and out of

a curve, the system may respond to a vehicle in

the neighboring lane and apply the brakes. You

can override the system by pressing the acceler-

ator pedal briefly.



– The system works with the various sensors and

cameras in the vehicle. Vehicles can only be de-

tected once they are within the area and range

covered by the sensors ðpage 128, fig. 101.

– When driving around tight curves, a vehicle

traveling ahead that was previously detected

may no longer be detected, and the system

may accelerate unexpectedly.

– The system does not respond to a stationary ve-

hicle in the same lane if it expects that you can

easily drive around the stationary vehicle by

turning the steering wheel.

The driving situation and the settings are dis-

played in the instrument cluster ðfig. 110. In

the Driver assistance ðfig. 111 display, you can

find more detailed information about the sys-

tem. The displays depend on the country and

equipment.

– The system cannot respond to stationary obsta-

cles, such as vehicles at the end of a traffic jam,

especially when traveling at high speeds.

– The system has a limited ability to detect

vehicles that are traveling a short distance

ahead, off to the side of your vehicle, or moving

into your lane.

– Objects that are difficult to detect, such as mo-

torcycles traveling ahead, vehicles with high

ground clearance, or vehicles with an overhang-

ing load, may be detected late or not detected

at all.

Preselecting a speed

You can also preselect the speed when adaptive

cruise control is not active by moving the lever in

the desired direction + / - . Activate the previ-

ously selected speed by pulling the lever toward

you in the direction of the arrow.

– If you turn off the ignition or the adaptive

cruise control system, the set speed is

erased for safety reasons.

– When adaptive cruise control is turned on,

the ESC and ASR automatically turn on.

– The system cannot be turned off or it may

be interrupted if the road exceeds the maxi-

mum possible grade for safe operation.

Turning off

If you do not want to use the adaptive cruise con-

trol for a long period of time, you can turn it off.

– The adaptive cruise control is only an assist

system, and the driver is still responsible for

controlling the vehicle. The driver is espe-

cially responsible for braking, steering, and

maintaining the distance to other vehicles.

Overriding control

You can override the predictive control based on

the route ahead at any time by pressing the ac-

celerator pedal. If the system changes the vehicle

speed to adapt to speed limits, you can change

the speed using the lever ðpage 145, fig. 113.

Tips

– Always keep your hands on the steering

wheel so you can be ready to steer at any

time. The driver is always responsible for

adhering to the regulations applicable in

the country where the vehicle is being oper-

ated.

Setting predictive control

You can turn the predictive control on or off and

adjust its settings in the Driver assistance menu

under Audi adaptive cruise control ðpage 130.

The settings depend on the vehicle equipment.

– The intervention requests may be accompa-

nied by additional audio or visual signals,

depending on the situation.

Set speed limit – adaptation to speed limits can

be turned On or Off. Regulation With tolerance

can also be selected, if desired. In this scenario,

you may fall below or exceed the set speed in fa-

vor of increased efficiency.

Predictive control

Applies to: vehicles with Audi adaptive cruise control and pre-

dictive control

General information

Adjustment to curves along route – Adjustment

based on the curves along the route can be ad-

justed. The setting influences vehicle handling

with predictive control, for example the speed for

driving through curves.

With predictive control, efficiency assist adapts

the set speed in adaptive cruise control

ðpage 144, fig. 110 based on detected speed

limits and the upcoming route. Once the system

no longer detects any relevant conditions ahead,

adaptive cruise control will accelerate back up to

the last speed that you set. After turning on the

ignition, the availability of predictive control is

indicated by a message when the adaptive cruise

control is first activated.

driving through highway interchanges and

when driving on or off the expressway.

– The system can fail to provide control or the

control may be faulty if the values from the

camera-based traffic sign recognition* are

incorrect or the navigation system* map da-

ta is outdated.

– Pay attention to traffic and the area around

your vehicle when predictive control is

turned on. The driver is always responsible

for assessing the traffic situation.

– When route guidance is turned on, the sys-

tem adapts to the route provided by the

navigation system. Driving without route

guidance or leaving a route can result in

faulty control.

– The system does not consider “right of way”

rules and does not respond to traffic lights,

so lack of driver attention in these situations

can increase the risk of an accident.

– The speed when driving through curves may

be different from what you as a driver would

do or may not be suitable for the weather

and road conditions. If necessary, apply the

brakes and reduce the selected speed to be

maintained in the Adjustment to curves

along route setting to reduce the risk of an

accident.

Setting the distance

Applies to: vehicles with Audi adaptive cruise control

Tips

– Predictive control can exceed or drop below

the maximum permitted speed. The driver

is always responsible for adhering to the

permitted speed limits.

When approaching a vehicle traveling ahead, the

adaptive cruise control system brakes to match

that vehicle's speed and then adjusts to the set

distance. If the vehicle traveling ahead acceler-

ates, then the adaptive cruise control will acceler-

ate up to the speed that you have set.

– If a speed limit is detected, the marking

You can override control by the system complete-

ly, for example if you would like to pass another

vehicle or if you would like to accelerate faster.

To accelerate manually, pull the lever toward

you in the direction of the arrow and hold it

there, or press the accelerator pedal.

To resume the usual cruise control, release the

lever or remove your foot from the accelerator

– When setting the distance, the driver is re-

sponsible for adhering to any applicable le-

gal regulations.

When you are in the Driver assistance display,

the message Overridden will appear.

– In the Driver assistance display, a graphic

display is shown instead of the indicator

Decreasing the distance

You can temporarily decrease the distance even

more, for example if you would like to merge into

another lane because of lane closures. In this sit-

uation, the adaptive cruise control will accelerate

above the set speed if necessary.

– Depending on the selected driving program

and distance, driving behavior when acceler-

ating may vary from moderate to sporty

ðpage 151, Adjusting adaptive cruise con-

trol.

To further reduce the distance temporarily to

the vehicle traveling ahead, pull the lever to-

ward you in the direction of the arrow and hold

it in that position.

To resume the system control, release the lev-

er.

– The distances provided are specified values.

Depending on the driving situation and the

driving style of the vehicle traveling ahead,

the actual distance may be more or less

than these target distances.

►

The adaptive cruise control reduces the distance

and, if necessary, accelerates the vehicle above

the set speed. When you are in the Driver assis-

tance display, the message Overridden will ap-

pear.



systems are active. Press the brake pedal to pre-

vent the vehicle from rolling or starting to move.

Store last distance - The last distance that was

set will be stored after the ignition is turned off.

If the distance is not stored, distance  (time

distance of approximately 1.8 seconds) is auto-

matically preset every time the ignition is turned

on.

system can help to keep the vehicle within a lane

calculated by the system. Within the limitations

of the system, the system controls the steering

automatically when adaptive cruise control is

turned on. Since traffic jam assist is only an assist

system, the driver must always keep their hands

on the steering wheel and be ready to steer. The

control can be overridden at any time by actively

steering.

– Steering correction – In the Late setting, the

steering correction will only occur shortly be-

fore a wheel crosses a detected lane marker

line. In the Early setting, steering correction oc-

curs continuously in order to help keep the ve-

hicle in the center of the lane. If the steering

correction cannot be set, the steering correc-

tion will function in the Late setting. You may

also toggle between the settings by briefly

pressing the 1 ðpage 155, fig. 122 button.

– Vibration warning – You can select if you would

also like to be warned using a vibration in the

steering wheel.

– Always keep your hands on the steering

wheel so you can be ready to steer at any

time. The driver is always responsible for

tected and the selected Audi drive select*

mode, not all preemptive safety measures

may be initiated under certain circumstan-

ces. Certain functions may be modified or

skipped if necessary.

Within the limitations of the system, the Audi

pre sense functions can initiate measures in cer-

tain driving situations to protect the vehicle occu-

pants and other road users. Depending on the ve-

hicle equipment, various Audi pre sense systems

may be installed:

– Audi pre sense may also be limited or un-

available under certain circumstances, for

example if:

– Audi pre sense basic can respond during emer-

gency and dangerous braking maneuvers and

unstable driving situations (such as oversteer-

ing or understeering).

– If there are persons in the vehicle who are

not using a safety belt

– After turning on the ignition, as long as

the  indicator light is on.

– Audi pre sense city and Audi pre sense front

can detect an impending frontal impact and re-

spond with warnings, braking interventions,

and preemptive safety measures for the vehicle

occupants.

– When driving in reverse

– The front passenger's airbag is turned off

– If there is an airbag control module mal-

– Audi pre sense rear monitors the rear traffic

behind your vehicle and can respond to an im-

pending rear impact.

– System functions may not be available if

the ESC is limited or turned off, or if there

Audi pre sense basic

Applies to: vehicles with Audi pre sense basic

To warn about detected dangers, Audi pre

sense  will appear in the instrument cluster

and an audio signal will sound.

Audi pre sense basic is automatically active at

speeds of approximately 20 mph (30 km/h) and

higher. Audi pre sense basic can trigger preemp-

tive safety measures during emergency braking

and dangerous braking maneuvers as well as in

unstable driving situations, such as oversteering

or understeering ðpage 156, Audi pre sense

safety measures.

A brief application of the brakes

If a collision is imminent, there may be an acute

warning using a brief application of the brakes.

You will also be warned about the danger by an

indicator in the instrument cluster display. You

may only be able to avoid a collision by swerving

or braking strongly.

The message Audi pre sense  will warn you

about the danger.

Automatic braking force increase

WARNING

If there is an impending collision and you are not

applying the brakes enough, the braking force

may be increased, depending on the situation.

Observe the safety precautions and note the

limitations of the assist systems, sensors, and

cameras ðpage 127 to ðpage 130.

Automatic braking

If you do not react to the acute warning, the sys-

tem may apply the brakes with strong braking

force within the limitations of the system in or-

der to reduce the speed of impact in the event of

a collision.

Audi pre sense city

Applies to: vehicles with Audi pre sense city

Within the limitations of the system, Audi pre

sense city can warn about an impending front

end collision and brake the vehicle strongly, if

necessary. The system uses the camera behind

the windshield and is available at speeds above

approximately 6 mph (10 km/h).

If the brakes were applied until the vehicle stop-

ped,  Please take over! will appear in the in-

strument cluster and you must take over control

of the vehicle.

Driving situations

WARNING

The situations to which the system responds de-

pends on the vehicle speed.

– Observe the safety precautions and note the

limitations of the assist systems, sensors,

and cameras ðpage 127 to ðpage 130.

– Audi pre sense cannot overcome natural

physical laws. It is a system designed to as-

sist and it cannot prevent a collision in every

situation. The driver must always intervene.

The driver is always responsible for braking

in a timely manner. Do not let the increased

safety provided cause you to take risks. This

could increase your risk of a collision.

Automatic braking interventions are available at

vehicle speeds up to approximately 52 mph

(85 km/h).

Up to speeds of approximately 52 mph

(85 km/h), the system may respond to the fol-

lowing situations:

– Pedestrians are moving inside your lane

Up to speeds of approximately 155 mph

(250 km/h), the system may respond to the fol-

lowing situations:

– Audi pre sense city does not respond to cer-

tain objects, such as animals, crossing or on-

coming vehicles, bars, railings, or railcars.

– Audi pre sense may be limited or unavailable

in curves or when it is dark.

– A vehicle traveling ahead clearly applies the

brakes

– When approaching a vehicle ahead that is clear-

ly traveling more slowly

– Loose objects can be thrown around the ve-

hicle interior during sudden driving or brak-

ing maneuvers, which increases the risk of

an accident. Store objects securely while

driving.

Within the limitations of the system, Audi pre

sense rear uses data from radar sensors at the

rear corners of the vehicle and calculates the

probability of a rear-end collision with the vehicle

behind you.

– Make sure that each person in the vehicle

has their safety belt fastened correctly and

follows the instructions for proper seating

ðpage 65.

Audi pre sense preemptive safety measures can

be initiated if the risk of a collision with the vehi-

cle behind you is detected.

sive field of view due to additional sensors that

are installed. Because of this, vehicles that are

braking or traveling significantly more slowly can

be detected earlier and more clearly, depending

on the limitations of the system.

Tips

Audi pre sense rear functions may also turn

off if there is a malfunction in the side assist

system.

Swerve assist

The following features apply to Audi pre sense

front:

Applies to: vehicles with swerve assist

The swerve assist can help you to steer the vehi-

cle around an obstacle detected in a critical area.

If you avoid an obstacle after the acute warning,

then the swerve assist assists you by applying

slight steering adjustment to correct your steer-

ing wheel angle as long as you are actively steer-

ing. Swerve assist is available at speeds between

approximately 20 mph (30 km/h) and 90 mph

(150 km/h).

– Automatic braking interventions are available

at vehicle speeds up to approximately 155 mph

(250 km/h)

– The system does not detect pedestrians

WARNING

Warning stage

Once you activate a turn signal, the system will

inform you about objects classified as critical by

turning on the display in the respective exterior

mirror.

If other driver assistance systems (depending on

vehicle equipment) detect that your vehicle is

about to leave the lane, the display will blink

even if the turn signal lever is not activated to

warn you about objects that are classified as criti-

cal. You can also be warned with corrective steer-

ing ðpage 154, Audi active lane assist/lane de-

parture warning.

General information

Side assist monitors the blind spot as well as the

traffic behind your vehicle and provides assis-

tance when you are changing lanes. If the system

detects an object approaching and classifies it as

critical, the display 1 in the exterior mirror on

that side of the vehicle will turn on.

System limitations

The system uses the data from the radar sensors

at the rear corners of the vehicle ðpage 129,

fig. 104. They are designed to detect the left and

right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are the

normal width. In some situations, the system

may respond to vehicles in your own lane or lanes

that are not directly adjacent to yours, or to ob-

jects on the side of the road. In this case, the dis-

play will turn on even though there is no vehicle

in the critical area. These situations may include:

Driving situations

The side assist warning is active at speeds above

approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) and can help in

situations such as the following:

– Your vehicle is being passed. The faster another

vehicle approaches from behind, the sooner the

display in the exterior mirror will turn on.

– There are vehicles traveling in the same direc-

tion as you in a lane adjacent to yours. The dis-

play in the exterior mirror will turn on when the

detected object is in the “blind spot”, at the lat-

est.

– Driving on the edge of your own lane

– Narrow lanes

– Curves

– High barriers on the side of the road

– Construction zones

WARNING

– You are slowly passing another vehicle. If the

difference in speed between the two vehicles is

less than 9 mph (15 km/h), the display in the

exterior mirror will turn on.

– Observe the safety precautions and note the

limitations of the assist systems, sensors,

and cameras ðpage 127 to ðpage 130.

– The display may not appear on time when

vehicles are approaching or being passed

very quickly.

Information stage

As long as you do not activate a turn signal, the

system will inform you about objects classified as

critical by turning on the display in the respective

exterior mirror 1 .

Tips

– If the window glass in the driver's door or

front passenger's door has been tinted, the



display in the exterior mirror may be incor-

rect.

weather conditions may be too poor or a sensor

may be obstructed. Clean the sensor area at the

rear corners of the vehicle ðpage 129, fig. 104

and try to turn the systems on again later.

– The coverage areas of the sensors ðfig. 123

are schematic representations and do not

represent a true-to-scale image of the sen-

sor ranges.

If the malfunction remains, drive to an author-

ized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili-

ty immediately to have the malfunction correct-

ed.

– The system complies with United States FCC

regulations and ISED regulations

ðpage 310.

Exit warning

Adjusting side assist

Applies to: vehicles with side assist

Description

Applies to: vehicles with exit warning system

You can turn the side assist on or off in the Driver

assistance menu, or adjust it to your preferences

ðpage 130. The settings depend on the vehicle

equipment.

Possible settings:

Brightness

Change the brightness only when side assist is

turned on, so that the selected setting can be

checked in the exterior mirror displays. Adjust

the brightness to a level where the display in the

information stage will not disrupt your view

ahead. Because the display brightness automati-

cally adapts to the ambient light, it may have al-

ready been adjusted to the highest or lowest set-

ting during the automatic adaptation.

Tips

– If the system is turned on, the displays on

the exterior mirrors will turn on briefly each

time the ignition is turned on.

– If you turn side assist on or off, the exit

warning will also turn on or off.

General information

Within the limitations of the system, the exit

warning system can detect traffic approaching

from behind such as vehicles, and provide assis-

tance based on this information when you are ex-

iting the vehicle ðfig. 124. The system uses the

data from the radar sensors at the rear corners of

the vehicle.

– Certain settings are automatically stored

and assigned to the remote control key be-

ing used.

Messages

Applies to: vehicles with side assist

If  or  is displayed when there is a malfunc-

tion, the side assist and exit warning system

functions may be unavailable or may be limited.

Displays and warnings

If a door is opened while the vehicle is stationary,

the warning strip 1 on that door and the display

2 on that side of the vehicle will blink if another 

road user is detected in a critical situation. If an-

other road user that is classified as critical is ap-

proaching while a door is already open, the dis-

plays on that door will turn on.

– The system complies with United States FCC

The same messages apply for the exit warning

system and side assist ðpage 161.

WARNING

– Observe the safety precautions and note the

limitations of the assist systems, sensors,

and cameras ðpage 127 to ðpage 130.

– Always pay attention to traffic and to the

area around your vehicle. The exit warning

system does not replace the attention of the

vehicle occupants. The vehicle occupants are

always responsible for opening the doors

and exiting the vehicle.

– The exit warning system does not respond

to people and cannot warn you about every

type of approaching object, such as cyclists.

Always monitor the traffic situation as well

as the vehicle's surroundings with direct eye

contact.

– The display may not appear in time when

vehicles are approaching very quickly.

– The exit warning system does not respond

to stationary objects or pedestrians.

– The exit warning system will not provide

alerts if your vehicle is pulled too far into

the parking space so that it is hidden by ad-

jacent vehicles.

Tips

– The exit warning is turned on or off by the

side assist warning ðpage 161.

– The exit warning system can be available for

up to approximately three minutes after un-

locking the vehicle and opening the door as

well as after turning off the ignition. Then

the displays flash briefly and the system

turns off.

– The display brightness for the exit warning

system cannot be adjusted.

– The coverage areas of the sensors ðfig. 124

are schematic representations and do not

represent a true-to-scale image of the sen-

sor ranges.
