Handling dynamics  
Information on the sport differential  
WARNING  
Your vehicle must not be towed if there is a  
fault in the electronic steering lock – risk of  
accident!  
The sport differential varies the distribution of  
power between the driven wheels on the rear  
axle according to the prevailing conditions. A  
high level of agility and acceleration is therefore  
achieved during cornering, while the vehicle re-  
sponds well to steering input. The settings de-  
pend on the Audi drive select mode selected.  
Four-wheel drive  
(quattro)  
Introduction  
Driver messages about the four-wheel drive  
The four-wheel drive system varies the distribu-  
tion of power to the front and rear axles and thus  
improves the vehicle’s handling characteristics. It  
interacts with a selective wheel torque control,  
which may intervene when cornering ðpage 116.  
The following driver messages may appear, de-  
pending on the equipment installed in your vehi-  
cle:  
Dynamic driving system: fault. Function re-  
This combination gives the car exceptional han-  
dling capabilities – both on normal roads and in  
more difficult conditions, such as snow and ice.  
Even so (or perhaps especially for this reason), it  
is important to observe certain safety points

The function is restricted. You can continue driv-

Dynamic driving system: overheating.

Please adapt driving style  
The temperature of the drive system has risen  
significantly. You should avoid performance driv-  
ing until the temperature drops to the normal  
level and the indicator lamp goes out.  
quattro ultra  
If four-wheel drive is not required for the current  
road conditions, the rear part of the drive train is  
uncoupled in order to save fuel. The system con-  
tinuously analyses whether four-wheel drive is re-  
quired. This allows the rear part of the drive train  
to be recoupled shortly before it is needed.  
Four-wheel drive: please check tyres. See  
owner's manual  
A difference in the rolling circumferences of the  
front and rear tyres has been detected. All four  
wheels must be fitted with tyres of the same  
type, size (rolling circumference) and tread pat-  
tern. Check the tyres and correct the tyre pres-  
sures if necessary. If the indicator lamp does not  
disappear, contact a qualified workshop.  
WARNING  
Even with four-wheel drive, you should al-  
ways adjust your speed to suit the condi-  
tions – risk of accident!  
The braking ability of your car is limited by  
the grip of the tyres. In this respect, your car  
is no different from a car without four-wheel  
drive. Therefore, do not be tempted to drive  
too fast – risk of accident!  
Electronic stabilisation  
control  
On wet roads bear in mind that the front  
wheels may start to “aquaplane” and lose  
contact with the road if the car is driven too  
fast. If this should happen, there will be no  
sudden increase in engine speed, as with a  
front-wheel drive car. Therefore, do not  
drive too fast in the wet: adjust your speed  
to suit the conditions (accident risk).  
Introduction  
The electronic stabilisation control (ESC) increa-  
ses the car's stability. It reduces the tendency to  
skid and improves the stability and roadholding  
of the vehicle. The ESC detects critical handling

situations, such as understeer, oversteer, wheel-  
spin on the driven wheels or any danger of the ve-  
hicle tipping over.  
The ESC can also intervene via the steering in or-  
der to stabilise the vehicle.  
The system stabilises the vehicle by braking indi-  
vidual wheels or by reducing the engine torque.  
WARNING  
The grip provided by the ESC and the inte-  
grated systems is still subject to the physi-  
cal limits of adhesion. Always bear this in  
mind, especially on wet or slippery roads. If  
you notice the systems cutting in, you  
should reduce your speed immediately to  
suit the road and traffic conditions. Do not  
let the extra safety provided tempt you into  
taking any risks when driving – risk of acci-  
dent!  
The ABS and ASR systems can only work properly  
if all four tyres have a similar degree of wear. Any  
differences in the rolling circumference of the  
tyres can cause the system to reduce engine pow-  
er when this is not desired.  
The systems can make noises when they inter-  
vene.  
The stabilisation functions integrated in the ESC  
system include the following:  
Remember that the accident risk always in-  
creases if you drive fast, especially in cor-  
ners or on a wet or slippery road, or if you  
follow too close behind the vehicle in front  
of you. Please bear in mind that even the  
ESC and the integrated systems cannot com-  
pensate for the increased accident risk.  
When accelerating on a uniformly slippery  
surface (for instance all four wheels on ice  
or snow), press the accelerator gradually  
and carefully. The driven wheels may other-  
wise start to spin (in spite of the integrated  
control systems), which would impair the  
car's stability and could lead to an accident.  
Increasing the load the vehicle is carrying –  
particularly its roof load – raises the vehi-  
cle’s centre of gravity and therefore also in-  
creases the risk of the vehicle tipping over.  
Adapt your driving style to suit the condi-  
tions and avoid performing any dynamic ma-  
noeuvres – risk of accident!  
Anti-lock brake system (ABS)  
ABS prevents the wheels from locking up under  
braking until the vehicle has reached a virtual  
standstill. You can continue to steer the vehicle  
even when the brakes are on full. Keep your foot  
on the brake pedal and do not pump the brakes.  
There may be noises while the anti-lock brake  
system is working.  
Traction control system (ASR)  
In the event of wheelspin, the traction control  
system reduces the torque to match the amount  
of grip available. This increases driving stability.  
Electronic differential lock (EDL)  
When the EDL detects wheelspin, it brakes the  
spinning wheels and directs the power to the  
other wheels. This function is not available at  
high speeds.  
To prevent the disc brake of the braked wheel  
from overheating, the EDL cuts out automatically  
if subjected to excessive loads. The vehicle can  
still be driven. The EDL will switch on again auto-  
matically when the brake has cooled down.  
Using the electronic stabilisation control  
The button ( on some vehicles) for operat-  
ing the ESC is located in the centre console above  
the selector lever. The ESC is switched on auto-  
matically when the vehicle is switched on.  
Selective wheel torque control  
The selective wheel torque control function inter-  
venes when cornering by braking the wheels on  
the inside of the bend individually as required.  
This enables precision cornering.  
Restricting the ESC  
In certain situations it may be appropriate to re-  
strict the stabilisation functions of the ESC so  
that the wheels can spin – for example, when

rocking the car backwards and forwards to free it,  
or when driving with snow chains fitted. The ESC  
can also be restricted if reduced stabilisation in-  
put is desired during performance driving.  
Driver messages about the electronic  
stabilisation control  
The following driver messages may appear, de-  
pending on the equipment installed in your vehi-  
cle:  
To restrict the ESC, press the button brief-  
ly. The indicator lamp will light up.  
To reactivate the full range of ESC stabilisation  
functions, press the button again. The indicator  
lamp will go out.  
Stabilisation control (ESC/ABS): fault!  
See owner's manual  
There is a fault in the ABS or EDL. This will also  
cause an ESC malfunction. The vehicle can still be  
braked in the normal way (however the ABS con-  
trol function will be out of action).  
Switching off the ESC  
For more active control of the vehicle with no in-  
put from the ESC stabilisation functions, the ESC  
system can be switched off completely.  
Drive to a qualified workshop without delay and  
have the fault rectified.  
To switch off the ESC, press and hold the   
button for more than 3 seconds. The indicator  
lamps and   will light up.  
Further indicator lamps  
If flashes while the vehicle is in motion, the  
ESC is intervening. Noises may be heard while  
this is happening. If the indicator lamp lights up  
permanently, the ESC system has been switched  
off for system reasons. If the indicator lamp goes  
out, this means the system is fully functional.  
To reactivate the full range of ESC stabilisation  
functions, press the button again. The indicator  
lamps will go out.  
Information on the electronic stabilisation  
control  
Systems which can apply the brakes automati-  
cally may be partially or completely unavailable  
if the ESC is restricted, switched off or malfunc-  
tioning.  
If there are faults in other systems or if specific  
driver assist systems are active, the ESC must  
be switched on for system-related reasons. The  
ESC is switched on automatically if necessary  
and cannot be operated via the button in this  
case.  
WARNING  
If the ESC has been switched off or if its  
functions have been restricted, the vehicle  
will not be stabilised at all or will only be  
stabilised to a limited degree. The driven  
wheels may start to spin, causing the vehicle  
to lose grip, in particular on slippery or wet  
roads – risk of accident!  
Only drive the vehicle with the ESC switched  
off or with restricted functions if this is nec-  
essary. You should switch the ESC on again  
as soon as possible.
