Opening and closing  
Information about using the foot motion  
correctly  
The luggage compartment lid can be opened au-  
tomatically ð  
page 42.  
in General information on  
The luggage compartment lid will only open if  
you make the movement as described. This pre-  
vents the luggage compartment lid from opening  
due to similar movements, such as when you  
walk between the rear of the vehicle and your ga-  
rage door. In some situations, the function may  
be limited or temporarily unavailable. This may  
happen if:  
Requirements: the ignition must be off and the  
convenience key function must be activated in  
the MMI. You must be carrying your convenience  
key* with you. You must be standing at the center  
behind the luggage compartment lid. Depending  
on vehicle equipment, it may also be possible to  
stand slightly off-center at the back of your vehi-  
cle.  
You are standing too close to the bumper or too  
far away from it.  
Activating and deactivating the function  
The luggage compartment lid was closed or  
opened immediately beforehand.  
You can turn the foot motion function for the  
luggage compartment lid on or off by activating  
or deactivating the function for unlocking with  
the convenience key (keyless access) in the cen-  
tral locking menu ðpage 36, Setting the central  
locking system.  
You park close to a hedge and the branches  
move back and forth under the vehicle for a  
long period of time.  
You clean your vehicle, for example with a pres-  
sure washer or in a car wash.  
There is heavy rain.  
Opening the luggage compartment lid  
The bumper is very dirty, for example after driv-  
ing on roads that have been treated with salt.  
There is interference with the convenience key’s  
radio signal, such as from mobile devices or re-  
mote controls.  
When opening, the turn signals will give visual  
confirmation.  
To open the luggage compartment lid, move  
your foot back and forth one time (foot motion)  
under the bumper ðfig. 35. Do not touch the  
bumper. Make sure you have secure footing.  
Once the system recognizes the movement, the  
luggage compartment lid will open.  
Information about malfunctions  
The following are examples of situations where  
the luggage compartment lid might open unin-  
tentionally:  
Stopping automatic opening or closing  
If a charging cable is routed under the rear of  
the vehicle during a charging session  
When sweeping underneath the rear bumper  
If there is a strong stream of water or steam  
During maintenance and repairs in the rear  
bumper area  
The automatic opening or closing of the luggage  
compartment lid will stop if:  
You repeat the foot motion that is described.  
You push the button 1 ðpage 43, fig. 34 or  
the handle in the luggage compartment lid  
ðpage 43, fig. 32 again, or  
If there are gates moving near the bumper  
You press the button on the convenience  
To prevent malfunctions, you can deactivate the  
foot motion function for the luggage compart-  
ment lid: ðpage 45, Activating and deactivating  
the function.

Something blocks the luggage compartment  
lid or makes it difficult for the lid to move.  
If you press the button 1 ðpage 43, fig. 34 or  
the handle in the luggage compartment lid  
ðpage 43, fig. 32 again, then the luggage com-  
partment lid will open/close again.

Observe the safety precautions ðpage 42.  
Please note that if you are carrying the con-  
venience key with you, the sensor-controlled  
45  
Opening and closing  
Fold the backrest on the rear bench seat for-  
ward ðpage 87.  
Pry the cover out using a suitable tool (such  
as a screwdriver) or the mechanical key if nec-  
essary ðfig. 36.  
luggage compartment lid could open unex-  
pectedly when you are performing tasks  
near the rear of the vehicle. This increases  
the risk of an accident.  
To unlock the luggage compartment lid, press  
the lever in the direction of the arrow using a  
suitable object (such as a screwdriver) or using  
the mechanical key if necessary.  
Fold the backrest backward until it locks into  
place.  
Note  
Please note that if you are carrying the con-  
venience key with you, the sensor-controlled  
luggage compartment lid could open unex-  
pectedly when you are performing tasks  
near the rear of the vehicle (for example,  
the lid could hit the ceiling in a garage).  
Always make sure there is no valid vehicle  
key within the operating area of the luggage  
compartment lid if you do not intend it to  
be there.  
WARNING  
Observe the safety precautions ðpage 42.  
WARNING  
If you have folded the backrests into the up-  
right position, always check if the lock is cor-  
rectly engaged by pulling forward on the  
backrest.  
Note  
To prevent the luggage compartment lid from  
opening unintentionally in the following sit-  
uations, deactivate the function for unlocking  
with the convenience key (keyless access) in  
the MMI ðpage 45, Activating and deactivat-  
ing the function:  
Child safety lock  
The child safety lock prevents the rear doors  
from being opened from the inside and the rear  
power windows from being operated.  
If you parked your vehicle near obstacles,  
such as lamp posts, pillars, or garage doors,  
or in underground garages with a low ceiling  
height.  
Each time you wash your vehicle  
When using a car wash  
Before all service and repair work on the ve-  
hicle  
Before attaching a bike rack or a trailer  
Manually unlocking the luggage  
compartment lid
