Climate control
Vehicle features and options
Interior air quality
This chapter describes all standard, country-
specific and optional features offered with the
series. It also describes features that are not
necessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and
systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
The air quality inside the vehicle is improved
by an emissions-tested interior, a microfilter,
and a climate-control system for regulating
temperature, air flow, and recirculated-air
mode.
In addition there are other functions which de‐
pend on the vehicle's equipment, for instance
microfilter/activated-charcoal filter, automatic
climate control with automatic recirculated-air
control AUC, and parked-car ventilation.

mate control will not have sufficient time to ad‐
just the set temperature.
Climate control functions in detail
Switching the system on/off
Switching on
Air conditioning
Concept
Press any button except for the following:
Rear window defroster.
Left side of air flow button.
Seat heating.
The air in the car's interior will be cooled and
dehumidified and, depending on the tempera‐
ture setting, warmed again.
Seat ventilation.
The car's interior can only be cooled with the
engine running.
If necessary, SYNC program.
Switching off
Switching on/off

panel switches off.
On the front passenger side:
Press and hold the left button on
the front passenger side.
Depending on the weather, the windshield and
side windows may fog up briefly when the en‐
gine is started.
The air conditioning is switched on automati‐
cally with the AUTO program.
Temperature
Concept
When using the automatic climate control,
condensation water, refer to page 203, devel‐
ops and drains underneath the vehicle. This is
normal.
The automatic climate control achieves the set
temperature as quickly as possible, if needed,
by using the maximum cooling or heating ca‐
pacity, and then keeps it constant.
Maximum cooling
Concept
Settings
The system is set to the lowest temperature,
optimum air flow and recirculated-air mode.
Turn the ring to set the desired
temperature.
General information
The function is available above an external
temperature of approx. 32 ℉/0 ℃ and with the
engine running is indicated.

Automatic recirculated-air control/
recirculated-air mode
Concept
Air flows out of the vents to the upper body re‐
gion. The vents need to be open for this.
The automatic recirculated-air control AUC
detects odors or pollutants in the outside air.
The outside air supply is shut off and the inte‐
rior air is recirculated.
The air flow can be adjusted with the air flow
active.
AUTO program
Concept
General information
If the system is activated, a sensor detects pol‐
lutants in the outside air and controls the shut-
off automatically.
Air flow, air distribution and temperature are
controlled automatically.
If the system is deactivated, outside air contin‐
uously flows into the car's interior.
Switching on/off
With constant recirculated-air mode, the air
quality in the car's interior deteriorates and the
fogging of the windows increases.
Press button.
Depending on the selected tempera‐
ture, the intensity of the AUTO program, and
outside influences, the air is directed to the
windshield, side windows, upper body, and
into the floor area.
Switching on/off
Press button repeatedly to select an
operating mode:
The air conditioning, refer to page 176, is
switched on automatically with the AUTO pro‐
gram.
LEDs off: outside air flows in continuously.
Left LED on, automatic recirculated-air
control: a sensor detects pollutants in the
outside air and shuts off automatically.
At the same time, a condensation sensor con‐
trols the program so as to prevent window
condensation as much as possible.
Right LED on, recirculated-air mode: the
supply of outside air into the vehicle is per‐
manently blocked.
Intensity
If the windows are fogged over, switch off the
recirculated-air mode and press the AUTO
button on the driver's side to utilize the con‐
densation sensor. Make sure that air can flow
to the windshield.
With the AUTO program switched on, the in‐
tensity can be set. This changes the automatic
control for the air flow and air distribution.
Press the left or right side of the but‐
ton: decrease or increase intensity.
Controlling the air flow manually
Concept

the automatic climate control.
Residual heat
Concept
The air flow of the automatic climate control
may be reduced automatically to save battery
power.
The heat stored in the engine is used to heat
the car's interior. This is possible up to 15 mi‐
nutes after switching off the engine.

terior is too hot.
Microfilter/activated-charcoal filter
Draft-free ventilation:
The microfilter removes dust and pollen from
the incoming air.
Adjust the vent to let the air flow past you.
The activated-charcoal filter removes gaseous
pollutants from the outside air that enters the
vehicle.

vehicle interior and lowers its temperature, if
needed.
Press the left or right side of the but‐
ton: decrease or increase intensity.
The selected intensity is shown on the display
of the automatic climate control.

Battery is sufficiently charged.
The symbol on the automatic climate con‐
trol lights up when the departure time is acti‐
vated.
If parked-car ventilation is switched on, the
vehicle battery will be discharged. Thus,
limit the maximum activation time to save
the vehicle battery. The system will be
available again after engine starting and/or
a short trip.
The symbol on the automatic climate con‐
trol flashes when the system has been
switched on.
The system will only be switched on within the
next 24 hours. After that, it needs to be reacti‐
vated.
Make sure that the vehicle's date and time
are set correctly.
