5. Screw the fuel fill cap back on Â
until it clicks at least once. If you Â
do not properly tighten the cap, Â
the malfunction indicator lamp Â
may come on (see page 395 ). You Â
will also see a ‘‘CHECK FUEL Â
CAP’’ message on the information Â
display. Â
Check Fuel Cap Message Â
driving once you tighten or replace Â
the fuel fill cap. To scroll to another Â
display, press the select/reset knob. Â
The ‘‘CHECK FUEL CAP’’ message Â
will appear each time you restart the Â
engine until the system turns the Â
message off. Â
6. Push the fuel fill door closed until Â
it latches. Â
If the system still detects a leak in Â
your vehicle’s evaporative emissions Â
system, the malfunction indicator Â
lamp (MIL) comes on. If the fuel fill Â
cap was not already tightened, turn Â
the engine off, and check or Â
Your vehicle’s onboard diagnostic Â
system will detect a loose or missing Â
fuel fill cap as an evaporative system Â
leak. The first time a leak is detected Â
a ‘‘CHECK FUEL CAP’’ message Â
appears on the information display. Â
retighten the fuel fill cap until it Â
clicks at least once. The MIL should Â
go off after several days of normal Â
driving once the cap is tightened or Â
replaced. If the MIL does not go off, Â
have your vehicle inspected by a Â
dealer. For more information, see Â
Turn the engine off, and confirm the Â
fuel fill cap is installed. If it is, loosen Â
it, then retighten it until it clicks at Â
least once. The message should go Â
off after several days of normal Â
