Driving and driving safety systems
Driving systems and your responsibility
Your vehicle is equipped with driving systems that
assist you in driving, parking and maneuvering the
vehicle. The driving systems are only aids. They
are not a substitute for you paying attention to
your surroundings and do not relieve you of your
responsibility pertaining to road trac law. The
driver is always responsible for maintaining a safe
distance to the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed,
for braking in good time and for staying in lane.
Pay attention to the trac conditions at all times
and intervene when necessary. Be aware of the
limitations regarding the safe use of these sys-
tems.
Driving systems can neither reduce the risk of an
accident if you fail to adapt your driving style nor
override the laws of physics. They cannot always
take into account road, weather or trac condi-
tions.
%
Some driving systems can regulate or limit the
speed to a previously set value. Draw atten-
tion to the stored speed when changing driv-
ers.
Information on vehicle sensors and cameras
Some driving and driving safety systems use cam-
eras as well as radar or ultrasonic sensors to
monitor the area in front of, behind or next to the
vehicle.

WARNING Risk of accident due to restric-
ted detection performance of vehicle sen-
sors and cameras
If the area around vehicle sensors or cameras
is covered, damaged or dirty, certain driving
and safety systems cannot function correctly.
There is a risk of an accident.
#
Keep the area around vehicle sensors or
cameras clear of any obstructions and
clean.
#
Have damage to the bumper, radiator
grille or stone chipping in the area of the
front and rear windows repaired at a
qualied specialist workshop.
Keep the areas around the sensors and cameras
in particular free of dirt, ice and slush
(/ page 326). The sensors and cameras must
not be covered and the detection areas around
them must be kept clear. Do not attach additional
license plate bracket, advertisements, stickers,
wraps or stone chip protection lms in the detec-
tion range of the sensors and cameras. Make sure
that there are no overhanging loads protruding
into the detection area.
If there is damage to a bumper or the radiator
grille, or aer an impact, have the function of the
sensors checked at a qualied specialist work-
shop. Have damage or stone chipping around the
cameras on the front and rear passenger com-
partment windows repaired at a qualied special-
ist workshop.

Functions of ABS
The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) regulates the
brake pressure in critical driving situations:
R
During braking, for instance, at maximum full-
stop braking or if there is insucient tire trac-
tion, the wheels are prevented from locking.
R
Vehicle steerability while braking is ensured.
If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel a
pulsing in the brake pedal. The pulsating brake
pedal can be an indication of hazardous road con-
ditions and can serve as a reminder to take extra
care while driving.
System limits
R
ABS is active from speeds of approx. 3 mph
(5 km/h).
R
ABS may be impaired or may not function if a
malfunction has occurred and the yellow !
ABS warning lamp lights up continuously aer
the vehicle is started.
Functions of O-road ABS
O-road ABS is specially adapted for driving o-
road:
R
The front wheels lock cyclically during braking.
R
The braking distance is shortened due to the
digging-in eect.
System limits
R
O-road ABS functions at speeds below
25 mph (40 km/h).
R
If O-road ABS intervenes, the ability to steer
may be restricted.
Function of BAS
&
WARNING Risk of an accident caused by a
malfunction in BAS (Brake Assist System)
If BAS is malfunctioning, the braking distance
in an emergency braking situation is
increased.
#
Depress the brake pedal with full force in
emergency braking situations. ABS pre-
vents the wheels from locking.
Driving and parking
161
The Brake Assist System (BAS) supports your
emergency braking situation with additional brake
force.
If you depress the brake pedal quickly, BAS is
activated:
R
BAS automatically boosts the brake pressure.
R
BAS can shorten the braking distance.
R
ABS prevents the wheels from locking.
The brakes will function as usual once you release
the brake pedal. BAS is deactivated.
Functions of ESP
®

Particularly in the following situations, ATTENTION
ASSIST only functions in a restricted manner and
warnings may be delayed or not occur:
R
If you have been driving for less than approx-
imately 30 minutes.
R
If the road condition is poor (uneven road sur-
face or potholes).
R
If there is a strong side wind.
R
If you adopt a sporty driving style (high corner-
ing speeds or high rates of acceleration).
R
If the time has been set incorrectly.
R
If you change lanes and vary your speed fre-
quently in active driving situations.
The ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness or alertness
assessment is reset and restarted when continu-
ing the journey in the following situations:
R
If you switch o the vehicle.
R
If you unfasten your seat belt and open the
driver's door (e.g. to change drivers or take a
break).

Speed control cruise control
▌Function of cruise control
Cruise control regulates the speed to the value
selected by the driver.
If you accelerate to overtake, forexample, the
stored speed is not deleted. If you remove your
Driving and parking

foot from the accelerator pedal aer overtaking,
cruise control will resume speed regulation back
to the stored speed.
You can store any speed above 15 mph
(20 km/h) up to the maximum design speed.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your
responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognize
dangers (/ page 159).
Mercedes‑AMG vehicles: cruise control is availa-
ble up to a maximum speed of 155 mph
(250 km/h).

R
h (green): cruise control is active.
A stored speed appears along with the h dis-
play.
%
The segments between the stored speed and
the end of the segment display light up in the
speedometer.
System limits
Cruise control may be unable to maintain the
stored speed on uphill gradients. The stored
speed is resumed when the gradient evens out.
Change into a lower gear in good time on long and
steep downhill gradients. Take particular note of
this when driving a laden vehicle. By doing so, you
will make use of the braking eect of the engine.
This relieves the load on the brake system and
prevents the brakes from overheating and wearing
too quickly.
Do not use cruise control in the following situa-
tions:
R
in trac situations which require frequent
changes of speed, e.g. in heavy trac, on
winding roads
R
on slippery roads. Accelerating can cause the
drive wheels to lose traction and the vehicle
could then skid.

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
▌Function of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist maintains the
set speed when driving freely. If vehicles are
detected ahead, the set distance is maintained, if
necessary until the vehicle comes to a standstill.
The vehicle accelerates or brakes depending on
the distance to the vehicle in front and the set
speed. The speed (in the range between 15 mph
(20 km/h) and 120 mph (200 km/h)) and the dis-
tance to the vehicle in front are set and saved on
the steering wheel.

Active Brake Assist
▌Function of Active Brake Assist
Active Brake Assist consists of:
R
Distance warning function
R
Autonomous braking function
R
Situation-dependent brake force boosting
Active Brake Assist can help you to minimize the
risk of a collision with vehicles or pedestrians or
to reduce the eects of such a collision.
172
Driving and parking
If Active Brake Assist has detected a risk of colli-
sion, a warning tone sounds and the L warn-
ing lamp lights up in the Instrument Display.
If you do not react to the warning, autonomous
braking can be initiated in critical situations.
In especially critical situations, Active Brake Assist
can initiate autonomous braking directly. In this
case, the warning lamp and warning tone occur
simultaneously with the braking application.
If you apply the brake yourself in a situation
detected as critical by Active Brake Assist, or
apply the brake during autonomous braking, situa-
tion-dependent brake force boosting occurs. The
brake pressure increases up to maximum full-stop
braking if necessary.
If the autonomous braking function or the situa-
tion-dependent brake force boosting is triggered,
additional preventive measures for occupant pro-
tection (PRE-SAFE
®
) may also be initiated, if the
vehicle is equipped with these.
&
WARNING Risk of an accident caused by
limited detection performance of Active
Brake Assist
Active Brake Assist cannot always clearly iden-
tify objects and complex trac situations.
In such cases, Active Brake Assist might:
R
Give a warning or brake without reason
R
Not give a warning or not brake
Active Brake Assist is only an aid. The driver is
responsible for maintaining a suciently safe
distance to the vehicle in front, vehicle speed
and for braking in good time.
#
Always pay careful attention to the trac
situation; do not rely on Active Brake
Assist alone.
#
Be prepared to brake or swerve if neces-
sary.
Observe the system limitations of Active Brake
Assist.
The individual subfunctions are available in the fol-
lowing speed ranges:
Distance warning function
The distance warning function issues a warning at
speeds:
R
From approximately 4 mph (7 km/h), if your
vehicle is critically close to a vehicle or pedes-
trian. An intermittent warning tone sounds and
the L distance warning lamp lights up in
the Instrument Display.
Brake immediately or take evasive action, if it is
safe to do so and the trac situation allows this.
The distance warning function can aid you in the
following situations with an intermittent warning
tone and a warning lamp:
Vehicles traveling in
front
Up to approx.
155 mph (250 km/h)
Stationary vehicles Up to approx. 50 mph
(80 km/h)
Crossing vehicles No reaction
Driving and parking
173

Trac Sign Assist
▌Function of Trac Sign Assist
Trac Sign Assist detects trac signs with the
multifunction camera (/ page 159). It assists
you by displaying detected speed limits and over-
taking restrictions in the Instrument Display.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your
responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognize
dangers (/ page 159).
Since Trac Sign Assist also uses the data stored
in the navigation system, it can update the display
in the following situations without detecting trac
signs.
The camera also detects trac signs with a
restriction indicated by an additional sign (e.g.
when wet). These are only displayed if a restric-
tion applies or if the system cannot clearly deter-
mine whether the restriction applies.
Warning when the maximum permissible speed is
exceeded
The system can warn you if you unintentionally
exceed the maximum permissible speed. Depend-
ing on the country, you can set in the multimedia

system by how much the maximum permitted
speed may be exceeded before a warning is given.
You can specify whether the warning is to be just
a visual warning or an acoustic one as well.
System limits
The system may be impaired or may not function
particularly in the following situations:
R
If there is poor visibility, e.g. due to insucient
illumination of the road, highly variable shade
conditions, rain, snow, fog or heavy spray.
R
If there is glare, e.g. from oncoming trac,
direct sunlight or reections.
R
If there is dirt on the windshield in the vicinity
of the multifunction camera or if the camera is
fogged up, damaged or obscured.
R
If the trac signs are hard to detect, e.g. due
to dirt, snow or insucient lighting, or
because they are obscured.
R
If the information on the navigation system's
digital map is incorrect or out of date.
R
If signs are ambiguous, e.g. road signs in road-
works or in adjacent lanes.
R
If you turn sharply when passing trac signs
outside the camera's eld of vision.

vehicle.
If a vehicle is detected at speeds above approx-
imately 8 mph (12 km/h) and this vehicle subse-
quently enters the monitoring range directly next
to your vehicle, the warning lamp in the outside
mirror lights up red.
If a vehicle is detected close to the side of your
vehicle, the red warning lamp in the outside mirror
ashes. If you switch on the turn signal indicator
in the corresponding direction, a warning tone
sounds once. If the turn signal indicator remains
switched on, all other detected vehicles are indi-
cated only by the ashing of the red warning
lamp.
If you overtake a vehicle quickly, no warning is
given.

Active Lane Keeping Assist
▌Function of Active Lane Keeping Assist
Active Lane Keeping Assist monitors the area in
front of your vehicle by means of a multifunction
camera (/ page 159). It serves to protect you
against unintentionally leaving your lane. You will
be warned by vibration pulses in the steering
wheel and guided back into your lane by a course-
correcting brake application.
Active Lane Keeping Assist is available in the
speed range between 37 mph (60 km/h) and
124 mph (200 km/h).
Active Lane Keeping Assist can neither reduce the
risk of an accident if you fail to adapt your driving
style nor override the laws of physics. It cannot
take into account road, weather or trac condi-
tions. Active Lane Keeping Assist is only an aid.
You are responsible for maintaining a safe dis-
tance, for vehicle speed, for braking in good time
and for staying in lane.
Driving and parking
177
If a lane-correcting brake application occurs, dis-
play 1 will appear on the instrument display.
The system does not apply the brake on the corre-
sponding side if you activate the turn signal indi-
cator.
Vehicles with Driving Assistance Package: if the
system detects an obstacle, such as another vehi-
cle in the adjacent lane, it will apply the brake
regardless of the turn signal indicator.

Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
▌Function of Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is an electronic park-
ing assistance system with ultrasound. It monitors
the area around your vehicle using multiple sen-
sors on the front bumper and on the rear bumper.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC shows you the dis-
tance between your vehicle and a detected obsta-
cle visually and audibly.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It is
not a substitute for your attention to the surround-
ings. The responsibility for safe maneuvering and
parking remains with you. Make sure that there
are no persons, animals or objects in the maneu-
vering area while maneuvering and parking in/
exiting parking spaces.
In the standard setting, an intermittent warning
tone sounds from a distance of approximately
1.0 (0.3 m) to an obstacle in front and approx-
imately 3.3 (1.0 m) to an obstacle behind. A
continuous warning tone sounds from a distance
of approximately 0.7 (0.2 m). Using the
Warn
Early setting in the multimedia system, the warn-
ing tones for front and side impact protection can
be set to sound at a greater distance of approx-
imately 3.3 (1.0 m) in front and 2.0 (0.6 m) on
the sides (/ page 191).
%
The Warn Early setting is always active in the
rear of the vehicle.

between approx. 1.0 (0.3 m) and 2.0
(0.6 m)
R
Red segments: obstacles at a very short dis-
tance of approx. 1.0 (0.3 m) or less
System limits
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC does not necessarily
take into account the following obstacles:
R
Obstacles below the detection range, e.g. per-
sons, animals or objects.
R
Obstacles above the detection range, e.g.
overhanging loads, overhangs or loading
ramps of trucks.
The sensors must be free of dirt, ice and slush.
Otherwise, they may not function correctly. Clean
the sensors regularly, especially aer driving o-
road, taking care not to scratch or damage them
(/ page 159).
Vehicles with trailer hitch: Parking Assist
PARKTRONIC is deactivated for the rear zone
when you establish an electrical connection
between your vehicle and a trailer.
Problems with Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Example: vehicles with 360° Camera
When rear segments
1 or all-round segments
2 light up red and the é symbol appears in
the Instrument Display, Parking Assist
PARKTRONIC may have been deactivated due to
signal interference. Start the vehicle again and
check if Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is working at
a dierent location.
188
Driving and parking
If a warning tone also sounds for approximately
two seconds every time the vehicle is started, it
may be due to one of the following causes:
R
The sensors are dirty: clean the sensors and
observe the notes on care of vehicle parts
(/ page 326).
R
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC has been deacti-
vated due to a malfunction: restart the vehi-
cle. If the problem persists, consult a qualied
specialist workshop.
▌Function of the passive side impact protection
Passive side impact protection is an additional
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC function which warns
the driver about obstacles at the side of the vehi-
cle. A warning is issued when obstacles are
detected between the front and rear detection
range. In order for an object to be detected, the
sensors in the front and rear bumper must detect
the object while you are driving past it.
During the parking procedure or maneuvering,
objects are detected as the vehicle drives past. If
you steer in the direction of a detected obstacle
and there is a risk of a lateral collision, a warning
is issued. The lateral segments light up orange or
red, depending on the distance to the obstacle.
Segment color depending on distance
R
Orange: approximately 1 - 2 (30 - 60 cm)
R
Red: < 1 (30 cm)
In order for lateral, front or rear segments to be
displayed, the vehicle must rst travel a distance
of at least half a vehicle's length. Only when the
vehicle has traveled a vehicle's length can all of
the lateral, front and rear segments be displayed.

Active Parking Assist
▌Function of Active Parking Assist
%
In the LOW RANGE o-road gear, Active Park-
ing Assist is not available if the dierential
locks are engaged and in the ë drive pro-
gram.
Active Parking Assist is an electronic parking
assistance system which uses ultrasound and is
automatically activated during forward travel. The
system is operational at speeds of up to approx-
imately 22 mph (35 km/h). When all the condi-
tions are fullled, the c symbol appears in the
Instrument Display and the system automatically
searches for and measures parking spaces on
both sides of the vehicle parallel and perpendicu-
lar to the direction of travel. If Active Parking
Assist is activated, suitable parking spaces are
displayed in the media display. The ë symbol
appears in the media display. The arrows show on
which side of the road free parking spaces are
located.
The parking space and, if necessary, the parking
direction can be selected as desired. Active Park-
ing Assist calculates a suitable vehicle path and
assists you in parking and exiting the parking
space.
Active Parking Assist provides assistance when
changing gear, accelerating, braking and steering
the vehicle.
Active Parking Assist is only an aid. It is not a sub-
stitute for your attention to the surroundings. The
responsibility for safe maneuvering and parking
remains with you. Make sure that no persons, ani-
mals or objects etc. are in the maneuvering
range.
Active Parking Assist is canceled if, among other

Objects located above or below the detection
range of Active Parking Assist are not detected
when the parking space is being measured. These
are also not taken into account when the parking
maneuver is calculated, e.g. overhanging loads,
overhangs or loading ramps of trucks, or the
boundaries of parking spaces. In some circum-
stances, Active Parking Assist may therefore
guide you into the parking space prematurely.
&
WARNING Risk of accident due to objects
located above or below the detection
range of Active Parking Assist
If there are objects above or below the detec-
tion range, the following situations may arise:
R
Active Parking Assist may steer too early.
R
Vehicles with automatic transmission: The
vehicle may not stop in front of these
objects.
This could cause a collision.
#
In these situations, do not use Active
Parking Assist.
Snowfall or heavy rain may lead to a parking
space being measured inaccurately. Parking
spaces that are partially occupied by trailer draw-
bars might not be identied as such or be meas-
ured incorrectly. Only use Active Parking Assist on
level, high-grip ground.
Do not use Active Parking Assist in the following
situations:
R
In extreme weather conditions suchas ice,
packed snow or in heavy rain.
R
When transporting a load that protrudes
beyond the vehicle.
R
If the parking space is on a steep downhill or
uphill gradient.
R
When snow chains are tted.
R
When driving o-road.
Active Parking Assist may also display parking
spaces that are not suitable for parking, e.g.:
R
Parking spaces where parking is prohibited.
R
Parking spaces on unsuitable surfaces.
Active Parking Assist will not assist you with park-
ing spaces at right angles to the direction of travel
in the following situations:
R
If two parking spaces are located immediately
next to each other.
R
If the parking space is immediately next to a
low obstacle suchas a curb.
Active Parking Assist will not assist you with park-
ing spaces parallel or at right angles to the direc-
tion of travel in the following situations:
R
If the parking space is on a curb.

Notes on trailer operation
*
NOTE Mercedes-AMG vehicles
#
Observe the notes in the Supplement.
You could otherwise fail to recognize
dangers.
&
WARNING Risk of accident due to unsuita-
ble ball neck
If you install an unsuitable ball neck, the trailer
hitch and the rear axle may be overloaded.
This can signicantly impair the driving char-
acteristics and the trailer may become loose.
There is a risk of fatal injury.
#
Only install a ball neck that complies
with the permissible dimensions and is
designed for the requirements of trailer
operation.
#
Do not modify the ball neck or the trailer
hitch.
The values approved by the manufacturer can be
found on the identication plates and in the "Tech-
nical data" section under "Trailer hitch" for the
towing vehicle (/ page 389).
&
WARNING Risk of accident due to vehi-
cle/trailer combination swerving
If you drive too fast in trailer operation, the
vehicle/trailer combination may start to
swerve.
This could cause you to lose control of the
vehicle/trailer combination. The vehicle/
trailer combination may even rollover.
#
Under no circumstances should you try
to straighten the vehicle/trailer combi-
nation by increasing your speed.
#
Reduce the speed and do not counter-
steer.
#
Brake if necessary.
*
NOTE Damage to the engine resulting
from overheating
#
If you subsequently have a trailer cou-
pling retrotted, depending on the vehi-
cle type, changes to the engine cooling
system may be required.

In the case of retrotting a trailer coupling,
please observe the attachment points on the
vehicle frame.
Retrotting a trailer hitch is permissible only if a
trailer load is specied in your vehicle documents.
If this is not the case, the vehicle is not approved
for trailer operation.
Further information can be obtained at a qualied
specialist workshop.
For a detachable trailer coupling, it is essential to
comply with the operating instructions of the
trailer coupling manufacturer.
Couple and uncouple the trailer carefully. If you
do not connect the trailer to the towing vehicle
correctly, the trailer may become detached.
Observe the following notes on the tongue weight:
R
Do not use a tongue weight that exceeds or
falls below the permissible tongue weight
R
Use a tongue weight as close as possible to
the maximum tongue weight
Do not exceed the following values:
R
Permissible towing capacity
R
Permissible rear axle load of the towing vehi-
cle
R
Permissible gross weight of the towing vehicle
R
Permissible gross weight of the trailer
R
Maximum permissible speed of the trailer
Ensure the following before starting a journey:
R
The tire pressure on the rear axle of the tow-
ing vehicle is set for a maximum load
R
The lighting of the connected trailer is opera-
tional
In the event of increased rear axle load, the car/
trailer combination must not exceed a maximum
speed of 62 mph (100 km/h) for reasons con-
cerning the operating permit. This also applies in
countries in which the permissible maximum
speed for car/trailer combinations is above
62 mph (100 km/h).
Attaching the ball neck
&
WARNING Risk of accident and injury due
to incorrectly installed ball neck
If the ball neck is not properly mounted and
secured, it may come loose along with the
trailer while the vehicle is in motion and
endanger other road users. There is a risk of
fatal injuries.
#
Mount and secure the ball neck as
described in the installation instructions
of the ball neck manufacturer.
#
With the ball neck mounted, always
make sure it is properly secured before
commencing a journey.
