sensor -G397-, up to model year 2017
Caution
Store the removed rain and light sensor -G397- in a dust-free
location until reinstallation and ensure the silicone contact
pad is not soiled.
Note
If a rain sensor is renewed and has to be replaced by a rain
sensor with another part number, the rain sensor must be
coded ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.
The rain sensors cannot be installed optionally. Determine
which rain sensor is the right one by referring to ETKA (Elec‐
tronic parts catalogue).
The rain and light sensor has been designed so that it can
be used again. The prerequisite for the re-use is that the
coupling pad is not damaged (check!).
Removing:
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers, and withdraw
ignition key.
– Remove interior mirror ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep.
gr. 68; Interior mirror; Removing and installing interior mirror
with rain sensor.

sensor -G397- -1- on recess -3- out of retaining plate -2-.
Note
On removal, take care to lever out the entire rain and light
sensor -G397- and not just the upper shell of the sensor.
Installing:
Install in the reverse order of removal. When doing this, note
the following:
Caution
♦ Prior to installation, thoroughly clean the surface of the
windscreen inside the bracket for rain and light sensor
-G397-. Completely remove remnants of coupling pad
from windscreen.
♦ When installing, the surface of the coupling pad of the
rain and light sensor -G397- must not be soiled or dam‐
aged. A sensor with a damaged coupling pad must be
renewed.

Note
If the surface (coupling pad) of the rain and light sensor -G397-
is soiled, it may be possible to clean it by “bonding on” and then
“pulling off” one or more adhesive strips.
– Clean windscreen within retaining plate thoroughly; cleans‐
ing agent ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 68; Inte‐

Note
Even if the sensor is installed correctly, small air bubbles may
initially appear between the windscreen and the coupling pad.
After approx. 10 minutes, the contact surface must be free of
bubbles.
– Connect connector -A- and secure rain sensor by fitting ca‐
ble cover.

– Code rain and light sensor -G397- if necessary ⇒ Vehicle
diagnostic tester.
1.7.2
Removing and installing rain and light
sensor -G397-, as of model year 2017
The rain and light sensor -G397- has a silicon layer (coupling
pad) which forms the contact surface to the windscreen.
The rain and light sensor -G397- is designed for reuse. A pre‐
requisite for re-use is that the coupling pad is not damaged or
dirty (check!).
If a rain and light sensor -G397- is renewed with a rain and light
sensor -G397- having a different part number, the new rain and
light sensor -G397- has to be coded ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.
The rain and light sensors -G397- cannot be fitted arbitrarily.
Determine the correct rain and light sensor -G397- using the
⇒ Electronic parts catalogue “ETKA”.
Removing
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers.
– Pull out ignition key.
– Remove interior mirror ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep.
gr. 68; Interior mirror; Removing and installing interior mirror.
Note
Wait at least 1 minute after releasing the retaining clip. This
is necessary to ensure that the silicone coating is relieved of
tension and will not be damaged during removal.
– Release retaining clip on left and right -arrows-.
– Starting from top, carefully lever rain and light sensor -G397-
-1- out of retaining frame on windscreen.
– Disconnect connector -1- from rain and light sensor -G397-.

– Remove rain and light sensor -G397- -2-.
Caution
The rain and light sensor -G397- may be soiled.
♦ Store the removed rain and light sensor -G397- so that
the coupling pad cannot be damaged or soiled from dust
etc. until it is refitted.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:
Caution
♦ Prior to installation, thoroughly clean the surface of the
windscreen within the retaining frame for rain and light
sensor -G397-. Make sure to completely remove any
remains of the coupling pad adhering to the windscreen.
♦ When installing, the surface of the coupling pad of the
rain and light sensor -G397- must not be soiled or dam‐
aged. A sensor with a damaged coupling pad must be
renewed.
If the surface of the coupling pad on the rain and light sensor
-G397- is soiled, it may be possible to clean it by “sticking on”
and then “pulling off” one or more adhesive strips.
– Thoroughly clean windscreen in area of retaining plate.
– If fitted, remove protective cap -1- from new rain and light
sensor -G397-:
♦ Push grip in direction of arrow -A-.

♦ Detach protective cap -1- in direction of arrow -B-.
– Connect connector to rain and light sensor -G397- -1-.
– Insert rain and light sensor -G397- -1- into retaining frame on
front windscreen until retaining clips -arrows- engage audibly
on both sides.
Note
Even when rain and light sensor -G397- is installed correctly,
small air bubbles may initially appear between windscreen
and coupling pad. After approx. 10 minutes, the contact sur‐
face must be free of bubbles.
If the contact surface is not free of bubbles after 10 minutes,
the rain and light sensor -G397- must be removed and in‐
stalled anew.
Air bubbles between the windscreen and the coupling pad
will cause the rain and light sensor -G397- to malfunction.
– Install interior mirror ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep.
gr. 68; Interior mirror; Removing and installing interior mirror
– If the rain and light sensor -G397- was renewed, perform
coding ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.
1.7.3
Repairing rain and light sensor -G397-
(made by TRW)
If the lens unit (coupling pad) is damaged, the housing with lens
unit can only be renewed by TRW.
There are different housings depending on the make of rain
sensor.
The rain sensor housing with lens unit is always supplied as a
replacement in individual parts with retaining clips. In vehicles
which do not require these retaining clips, the clips must be
removed.
Removing:
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers, and withdraw
ignition key.
– Remove rain sensor ⇒ page 76 .
