Electrical system for Your Volkswagen Polo SUV Sixth Generation (2017-2021)

Electrical system
The 12-volt supply system
The following battery types with capacities between 44 Ah and 70 Ah are used according to the engine and
equipment:
Conventional wet battery
EFB enhanced flooded battery
EFB+ enhanced flooded battery
Alternators with charging currents of 90, 110 and 140 amperes are used to generate the charging current
according to the optional equipment.

Networking system
The networking system in the Polo is based on the new MQB-A0 platform and comes in two variants:
Standard
Standard Plus
The two variants differ in the fitting locations of the data bus diagnostic interface J533 (gateway).
Standard
The gateway is integrated into the onboard supply
control unit J519 (BCM) in the Standard system. 
The Standard system is installed in Polo models with
manual gearboxes. The BCM with integrated
gateway is located directly on the relay and fuse
holder SC in the interior.

Standard Plus
Data bus diagnostic
interface J533
The Standard Plus system has an external gateway. This
is located opposite the onboard supply control unit on
the fuse holder SC. The Standard Plus system is used for
dual clutch gearboxes in conjunction with the
mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox J743. In order
to use the bus load in the powertrain CAN bus in an
optimum way, individual control units, for example, the
Power steering control unit J500, have been moved to
the running gear CAN bus.

Headlights
You can chose between two main headlights:
Halogen headlights
LED headlights
The halogen headlights contain the following light functions: dipped beam, main beam and turn signal. 
The side light and daytime running light functions are fulfilled by the additional light module in the bumper when
the halogen headlights are fitted.

The LED headlights contain the following light functions: dipped beam, main beam, turn signal and daytime
running light/side light. An ambient light is used in the main headlight for the first time in the Polo class.
It serves as a design element like the inner reflector. The ambient light lights up in addition to the daytime
running light/side light.

Additional light module
The LED daytime running light or LED side light is integrated into the additional light module in the front bumper
when the car is equipped with halogen headlights. The fog light function is also included in the light module and
uses an H8 bulb. According to the vehicle equipment, the LED daytime running light/side light can be fitted
individually or combined with the fog light.
The fog light is also used for the static cornering light function.
When the car is equipped with the LED headlights, the additional light module is used for the fog light and the
static cornering light.

Automatic light switching
From August 2016, vehicles require automatic light activation for the European type approval.
The function is achieved via various sensors according to the equipment.

light sensor G399 in the middle on the dash panel
The sunlight penetration photosensor G107 is generally used to regulate the Climatronic. The additional light
sensor G399 that is responsible for automatic light activation is located on the printed circuit depending on the
variant.

Interior lighting
Two systems are used for lighting in the vehicle interior in the Polo.
The interior lights use conventional halogen bulbs in the Trendline and Comfortline equipment lines. The
background lighting using LED technology for the interior features are used in the Highline and GTI variants and
above. The footwell, the doors and the dash panel area are also offered with white LEDs in this case. You can dim
the background lighting via the Infotainment system.

Dash panel inserts
Three dash panel inserts are available:
Basic with 2D dials
Medium with 3D dials
Active Info Display (AID)
Basic
The Basic dash panel insert has two round instruments for the rev counter and the speedometer. A display with
640 segments is positioned in the centre between them. The following is some of the information that can be
shown on the display:
Ambient temperature
Current fuel consumption
Average fuel consumption
Range
Fuel tank fill level
Driving time
Distance driven
Average speed
Digital speed
Speed warning

Coolant temperature
Medium
The Medium dash panel insert has the same functions as the Basic variant. 
It differs, however, in the following points:
Black and white multifunction
display with TFT screen and a
resolution of 320 × 240 pixels
Additional displays for coolant
temperature and fuel gauge are
located respectively in the round
instruments

Active Info Display
The Active Info Display (AID) is also appearing in the Polo for the first time. The AID has a high-resolution 10.25"
TFT display and is available with the Composition Media or the Discover Media.
The content is virtually displayed purely with the AID.
The users themselves can choose how to arrange the content from a range of preset options. The driver
information display can be customised to show additional data for the driving, navigation and driver assist
functions in the middle area between the speedometer and the rev counter. Additional content can be freely
configured in the round tubes by using the information profiles. The user can choose between up to 12 existing
information profiles. The whole screen can, for example, be used to display the multifunction display (MFI),
audio, telephone or navigation. The safety-related LED warning lamps are located in the left and right of the
front frame. Further LED warning lamps (for example, airbag) are also located in the AID display. They are
displayed there by software. The AID has a modular design like the other MQB dash panel inserts.
It is connected to the fast MOST bus in order to display the navigation map, audio images or telephone contact
pictures.

Keyless locking and starting system
“Keyless Access”
The Keyless Access locking and starting system is being used for the first time in the Polo 2018. It allows you to
unlock the doors on the new Polo and start the engine at the push of a button without having to operate the key
by hand. The most important components of Keyless Access are the ID sender in the vehicle key, the aerials and
sensors in the door handles, the electronic ignition lock, the ignition and starter button and the electronic
steering column lock.
