The ground must be flat and firm. Tilted or
unstable surfaces can cause the vehicle to
slide. If necessary use a large, strong board
or similar support for the vehicle jack.
Always carry out the following activities in the
order indicated, in preparation for changing the
wheel and removing the spare or emergency
wheel
On a hard, slippery surface (such as tiles) use
a rubber mat or similar to prevent the vehicle
jack from slipping.
1. In the event of a flat tire, park the vehicle, as
far as possible, away from the flow of traffic
and on a flat, firm surface.
Fit the vehicle jack only at the points descri-
bed. The vehicle jack claw must grip the ver-
tical rib under the sill securely → Fig. 33
2. Apply the handbrake.
3. Place the automatic transmission selector
lever in position P with the ignition on.

When towing a trailer, unhitch the trailer
from the traction vehicle before changing
the wheel.
4. Stop the engine and remove the key from the
ignition switch.
5. Turn on the warning lights and position the
warning triangle. Observe legal require-
ments.
Never place any part of your body (e.g. arm
or leg) underneath the vehicle if the latter is
only supported by the vehicle jack.
6. Ensure that all occupants exit the vehicle
away from moving traffic and proceed to a
safe position.
If you have to work underneath the vehicle,
use suitable stands to provide extra support.
Never lift the vehicle while the engine is run-
ning or if the vehicle is parked over a slope
surface.
7. Block the opposite diagonal wheel with a
stone or some other suitable object.
8. While towing trailers: unhitch the trailer
from the vehicle and park it properly.
Never start the engine when the vehicle is
raised on a vehicle jack. Engine vibrations
can cause the vehicle to fall off the vehicle
jack.
9. If the luggage compartment is loaded: re-
move the load.
10. Remove the tool box from the vehicle

11. Remove the spare wheel or emergency
wheel.
Ignoring any of the points on this important
safety checklist can lead to accidents and inju-
ries.

13. Loosen the wheel bolts on the wheel that is
being changed
Always follow the instructions on the check-
list and comply with applicable safety pre-
cautions.

The spare or emergency wheel is secured with a
steel cable under the vehicle and must be folded
down before it can be removed → page 36.
Only remove the spare wheel or emergency
wheel yourself when you have safely parked the
vehicle and are familiar with the necessary safety
actions and precautions! Otherwise, use a speci-
alized company qualified for this purpose.
