Nobody may perform any work on a high-voltage vehicle without the right high-voltage-specific qualifications
and tools.
All Volkswagen workshops worldwide must train their staff to electrically instructed person (EIP) level as a
minimum.
The latest service literature provides a list of which operations require deactivation of the high-voltage system in
specific high-voltage vehicles.
There are numerous repair operations that can be carried out on a high-voltage vehicle that do not require
certified de-energisation of the high-voltage system. These repairs can generally be carried out by an EIP.
All employees at the service partner who come into or could come into contact with high-voltage
vehicles need to be qualified at least as an “electrically instructed person” (EIP).
Only high-voltage technicians (HVT) are allowed to work on the deactivated high-voltage system.
Requirements for personnel
All prospective high-voltage technicians need to have basic electrotechnical knowledge.
In Germany (requirements in other countries depend on national legislation), persons with the following
professions have the corresponding training, for example:
•
•
•
Motor vehicle mechanics, electricians and mechatronics technicians who began and completed their
apprenticeship after 1973.
Motor vehicle body and vehicle construction mechanics or mechanics for body maintenance who began and
completed their apprenticeship after 2002.
Individuals who can prove that they have completed the appropriate additional training to become a motor
vehicle service technician, master technician or engineer.
The aforementioned requirements may vary from country to country.
