NOTICE

High voltage battery

● Never dis- clutch or clamp the 12-volt battery

when the ignition is switched on or the

engine is running. Also, never use a 12-volt

battery that does not meet the vehicle's

battery specifications. The electrical system

or certain electronic components could be

damaged and electrical functions could fail.

● Never connect to the 12-volt socket or to

the cigarette lighter socket accessories that

supply current, e.g. breadboards, etc., to the

12-volt socket.

Dispose of the 12-volt battery in accordance

with the applicable regulations. The

battery can

contain toxic substances, such as sulphuric acid

collect it and dispose of it properly.

12-volt battery

There is a fault in the alternator. Have it

checked by a specialist workshop. Have

the electrical system checked. Disconnect

any unnecessary electrical switches. The

alternator will not charge the 12-volt

battery while driving. The start-stop

system cannot start the engine → p. 174.

Several electrical consumers have been

disconnected because the 12-volt battery

does not have sufficient voltage. Drive a

long distance at a slightly higher speed.

Do not connect any power-consuming

electrical consumers.

High Voltage General Warning Signs

There are warning signs → fig. 252 andon the

vehicle indicating the presence of high voltage.

The following vehicle parts may be fitted with

these warning signs:

Maintenance work on the high-voltage

battery must only be carried out by

qualified and trained personnel → p. 333.

Never make any modifications to the high-

voltage battery. When the high-voltage

battery is open, it must not come into

contact with water or other liquids. Liquids

can cause short circuits, electric shock and

burns.

– Those covers and lids behind which there are

high-voltage components subject to high

electrical voltage.

– All high-voltage components, including the

high-voltage battery.

– The locking plate, in the engine compartment.

High Voltage Battery Warning Sign

A warning sign on the high-voltage battery warns

of dangers.

WARNING

If work on the high-voltage system and high-

voltage components is carried out incorrectly,

this can lead to malfunctions, accidents and

injuries.

High voltage can cause serious or fatal

injury. Never touch the battery terminals

with your fingers, tools, jewellery or other

metal objects.

● Work on the high-voltage system and other

systems which can be indirectly influenced

by it may only be carried out by

appropriately qualified and trained

personnel.

The high-voltage battery contains hazardous

liquids and solids. Severe burns and

blindness can result if gases escape from the

battery. When working on the high-voltage

battery, always wear suitable eye protection

and protective clothing to prevent skin and

eyes from coming into contact with the

battery fluid. If battery fluid should come

into contact with skin or eyes, immediately

rinse the areas immediately.

NOTICE

After an accident or after having hit an obstacle

with the underbody of the vehicle, qualified

technical personnel must be called in.

The battery is not designed and formed to check the high-

voltage battery.

Cooling

NOTICE

Under the rear seat there is an air inlet for the

high-voltage battery. This inlet draws in cooled

air for the high-voltage battery. Never obstruct

or cover the ventilation area under the rear

seat.

If the 12-volt battery has been disconnected,

discharged or replaced, the combustion engine

may not switch off automatically at first when

the vehicle is started. If this situation persists for

several days, contact a qualified specialist

workshop. Volkswagen recommends that you

visit a Volkswagen dealer for this.

Maintenance

The user is not permitted to carry out any

maintenance work on the high-voltage

battery.

NOTICE

Do not transport large quantities of liquid in the

luggage compartment. If the liquid leaks out, it

could get under the high-voltage battery cover.

This could damage the high-voltage network and

the battery.

The battery maintenance connector is located

under the floor of the luggage compartment

under an orange cover. This connector is only

intended for service personnel and only qualified

persons are authorised to disconnect it → page

53.

covered, obstructed or otherwise closed,

damage to the battery may occur.

If the vehicle is not used for a long period of

time, the high-voltage battery is discharged. To

keep the high-voltage battery in good condition,

the vehicle must be driven at least every 2

months for at least 30 minutes or 20 km at the

latest. If the high-voltage battery becomes

discharged and it is not possible to start the

engine with the starting aid, seek the assistance

of qualified personnel. Volkswagen recommends
