High voltage system

General information on the

high voltage system

WARNING

Always observe the highway code and speed

limits and drive with foresight. A correct

assessment of the situation can make the

difference between arriving safely at your

destination and being seriously injured in an

accident.

DANGER

The vehicle's high-voltage mains and high-

voltage battery are dangerous and can cause

burns, other injuries and fatal electric shock.

● Always assume that the high-voltage

battery is fully charged and that all high-

voltage components are live. This can be

the case even with the hybrid drive system

and ignition switched off.

NOTICE

Volkswagen accepts no liability for damage to

the vehicle caused by poor fuel quality,

improper work on the vehicle or limited

availability of original spare parts.

● Never touch the high-voltage cables or the

high-voltage battery and its terminals, and

never touch them with jewellery or other

metal objects, especially when the cables,

the battery or its terminals are damaged.

the event of the air bags being triggered.

In electric mode, the vehicle emits

considerably less noise than when running

with the combustion engine, whether

stationary or in motion. This means that other

road users, such as pedestrians and children,

can neither hear nor perceive it, or only with

residential areas, when manoeuvring or

reversing.

● Never attempt to repair, modify or remove

the seat belts yourself. Always have repairs

to seat belts, automatic retractors and locks

carried out by a specialised workshop.

● Only start off when all occupants of the

vehicle have their seat belts correctly

● Always insert the belt tongue into the belt

buckle of the corresponding seat and latch

it correctly. The use of a belt buckle from

another seat reduces the safety belt's

protective function and can lead to serious

injury.

● Always prevent foreign bodies and liquids

from entering the seat belt buckle slot.

Otherwise, the function of the lock and the

safety belt may be impaired.

difficult for the seat belt to fit properly and

occupant of that seat is wearing 'their' safety

belt . The symbol indicates that it is not worn.

or her seatbelt, the seatbelt status is displayed

for approx. 30 seconds. The display can be

It is easy to explain how the laws of physics

work in the event of a frontal accident: as soon

as a vehicle is in motion → Fig. 37 , so-called

"kinetic energy" is generated in both the vehicle

and its occupants.

Not wearing a seat-belt or wearing it

incorrectly increases the risk of serious or fatal

injury. Seat-belts only provide optimum

protection if they are correctly fitted and used.

The higher the speed and weight of the vehicle,

the more energy must be absorbed in the event

of an accident.

However, the most important factor is the

speed of the vehicle. For example, if the speed

doubles from approx. 25 km/h (15 mph) to

approx. 50 km/h (31 mph), the corresponding

kinetic energy quadruples!

The magnitude of the "kinetic energy" depends

primarily on the speed at which the vehicle is

travelling and the weight of the vehicle and its

occupants. The greater the speed and the

greater the weight, the more energy must be

absorbed by the vehicle and its occupants.

The occupants of the vehicle who are not

wearing seat belts are not 'attached' to the

vehicle. Therefore, in the event of a frontal

collision, they will continue to travel at the

same speed as the vehicle was travelling before

the collision until something stops them! Since

the occupants of the vehicle in our example are

not wearing seat belts, in the event of a

collision with the wall, all the kinetic energy of

the occupants will only be absorbed by the

impact.

At speeds between approx. 30 km/h (19 mph)

and 50 km/h (31 mph), the forces acting on the

body in the event of an accident can easily

exceed one tonne (1000 kg). The forces acting

on the body increase the higher the speed at

which the vehicle is driven.

There is a widespread belief that in the case of

a minor accident the blow can be stopped with

the hands. This is not true!

accidents, but also for all types of accidents

The function of the airbag system does not

replace that of the seat belt. If the airbags are

deployed, they only provide additional

protection. The airbags do not deploy in every

type of accident. Even if the vehicle is equipped

with an airbag system, all occupants (including

the driver) must wear their seat belts and wear

them properly throughout the journey. This

reduces the risk of serious or fatal injury in the

event of an accident, regardless of whether the

seat is equipped with an airbag or not.

Each airbag only deploys once. For the best

possible protection, it is essential to always

wear your seat belt correctly. This will also

protect you in the event of an accident in which

the airbag does not deploy. Unbelted occupants

could be thrown out of the vehicle and, as a

result, be injured.

most countries.

Even if the vehicle is equipped with airbags, the

safety belts must be worn. The front airbags,

for example, are only triggered in certain cases

of frontal collision. They do not deploy in the

event of a frontal or minor side collision, a rear-

end collision, if the vehicle overturns or in the

event of an accident in which the airbag trigger

value programmed in the control unit is not

exceeded.

For this reason, always wear your seat belt and

make sure that the other occupants of the

vehicle are wearing their seat belts.

The vehicle must be correctly installed before the start of the

journey!

Correctly fitted seat belts can make a big

difference. Properly fitted seat-belts keep

occupants in the correct position and

significantly reduce kinetic energy in the event

of an accident. They also help to prevent

uncontrolled movements that could lead to

serious injuries. Properly fitted seat belts also

reduce the risk of being thrown out of the

vehicle.

Vehicle occupants wearing properly fitted seat-

belts will benefit greatly from the fact that

kinetic energy is absorbed by the seat-belts.

The structure of the front of the vehicle and

other passive safety components of the

vehicle, such as the airbag system, also ensure

a reduction in the kinetic energy absorbed by the

seat belts.

If you are unable to straighten the belt, put it

on anyway, but make sure that the twisted part

specialist workshop.

Seat belts only provide optimum protection and

reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury in the

event of an accident if the belt webbing is

correctly positioned. A properly positioned belt

webbing also retains the occupants in their seat

so that, if the airbag is triggered, it can provide

maximum protection. Therefore, always fasten

your seatbelt and make sure that the seatbelt

webbing is correctly positioned.

WARNING

Incorrect belt webbing can lead to serious or

fatal injuries in the event of an accident.

● The lap strap of the safety belt shall pass in

front of the pelvic area and never over the

abdomen. The safety belt should lie flat

and snug against the pelvis. If necessary,

the lap belt should be tightened slightly.

Correct positioning of the belt webbing

– The shoulder band should always pass over

the centre of the shoulder and never over

the neck, over or under the arm, or behind

the back.

● In the case of pregnant women, the lap

around the 'round' abdomen.

can be used to adjust the position of the

seatbelt in the shoulder area according to the

height of the occupant so that the seatbelt can

be correctly positioned:

Belt pretensioner

– Compress the forwarding device in the

direction of the arrows and hold it in this

position → fig. 46 .

The safety belts in the front seats and, where

appropriate, in the rear rear seats are fitted with

pretensioners.

– Slide the repositioning device up or down

until the safety belt passes over the centre

of the shoulder.

The pre-tensioners are activated by sensors in

the event of severe frontal, side and rear

collisions and tighten the seat belts in the

opposite direction to their exit. If the seatbelt

is slack, the pretensioner tightens the seatbelt,

thus cushioning the occupants' movement

forward or in the direction of impact. The

seatbelt pretensioners work in conjunction with

the airbag system. In the event of a rollover,

the pretensioners are not activated unless the

side airbags are triggered.

– Release the forwarding device.

– Make sure that the return device is locked in

place by pulling on the safety strap.

WARNING

Never adjust the height of the safety belt while

Introduction to the topic

● Do not allow other persons, animals or

objects to come between the occupants of

the front and rear side seats and the air

bag deployment area. Ensure that this is

done for all occupants of the vehicle,

including children.

The vehicle is equipped with front airbags for

the driver and front passenger. The front

airbags can provide additional protection for the

driver's and front passenger's thorax and head

when the seat, seat belts, head restraints and

steering wheel (in the case of the driver) are

correctly adjusted and properly used. The

airbags are only designed to provide additional

protection. Airbags are not a substitute for seat

belts, which should always be worn, even when

the front seats are equipped with front airbags.

WARNING

Airbags are only deployed once and if they are

deployed, the system must be replaced.

● Have any triggered airbags and affected

system parts replaced immediately with

new parts approved by Volkswagen for this

vehicle.

WARNING

Never rely on the airbag system alone for

protection.

● Repairs and modifications to the vehicle

should only be carried out by a specialist

workshop. Specialised workshops have the

necessary diagnostic equipment, repair

information and tools, as well as qualified

personnel.

● When triggered, airbags only provide an

additional protective function.

● The airbag system provides the best

protection and reduces the risk of injury in

combination with properly fitted seat belts

● Never fit air bag parts removed from end-of-

life vehicles or from recycling plants to the

vehicle.

● Before setting off, always sit in the correct

position, always wear your seat belt

correctly and always wear it properly

occupants of the vehicle and also for urban

● Never modify any component of the airbag

system.

WARNING

When the airbags are triggered, fine dust

may be released and steam may form. This is

normal and does not mean that the vehicle

has been ignited.

● Fine dust may irritate the skin and mucous

membranes of the eyes and may cause

breathing difficulties, especially in persons

who have or have had asthma or other

respiratory impairments. To reduce

breathing difficulties, get out of the vehicle

or open windows or doors to inhale fresh

factors for the triggering of airbags are the

nature of the object (hard or soft) against which

the impact occurs, the angle of collision and the

speed of the vehicle.

Description and operation of

airbags

The airbag can protect vehicle occupants in the

event of frontal and side collisions by

cushioning their displacement in the direction of

impact.

Airbags only supplement the function of

automatic three-point seat-belts in certain

accidents where vehicle deceleration is high

enough for the airbags to deploy. The airbags

are only deployed once and only under certain

circumstances.

The seat-belts are always there to provide

protection in situations where the airbags

should not or have already deployed. For

example, when a vehicle, after a first collision,

collides with another vehicle or is hit by another

vehicle.

When an airbag is triggered, a gas generator

inflates it. This ruptures the relevant airbag

covers and the airbag deploys with great force

in a matter of milliseconds in its respective

deployment zone. When the occupant, with the

seat belt fastened, dives into the deployed

airbag, gas is released from the airbag to slow it

down and cushion the impact. This can reduce

the risk of serious injury or death. Other injuries

such as swelling, contusions, burns or dents

caused by the airbag being deployed cannot be

ruled out. Frictional heat may also be produced

when the airbag is deployed during

may not be available in some countries.

The most important factors involved in

triggering the airbags are the type of accident,

the angle of collision, the speed of the vehicle

and the nature of the object into which the

vehicle collides. Therefore, the airbags do not

deploy in any collision that causes per- ceptible

damage to the vehicle.

– Optimised seat belts in all seating positions

– Pretensioners with pre-tensioning function on

driver's and front passenger seat belts

The airbag system is triggered by the degree of

deceleration which the vehicle experiences as a

result of an impact and which is recorded by an

electronic control unit. If the deceleration rate

value is below the reference value programmed

in the control unit, the airbags will not be

triggered even though the vehicle may sustain

significant damage in an accident. Damage to

the vehicle in an accident, the absence of such

damage or the cost of repairing it is not

the seat belts, provides additional protection for

the head and chest area of the driver and front

passenger in the event of a severe frontal

collision. Always keep the greatest possible

distance from the front airbag → p. 54, Seating

position . In this way, the front airbags can be

fully deployed in the event of a triggering of the

airbag and provide maximum protection.

child seat. The seat must be suitable for the

child's height, age and weight.

● Never use a child seat to transport several

children at the same time.

● Never carry a child or baby on your lap.

● Never leave a child unattended in a child

seat.

● Never allow children to travel unprotected

by a restraint system, to stand up in the

vehicle or to kneel on the seats while

driving, or to adopt an incorrect position

while driving. This is particularly important

if the child is travelling in the front

passenger seat. In the event of an

accident, the child could be seriously

injured or cause injury to others.

Transporting children safely

Introduction to the topic

Child seats reduce the risk of injury in the event

of an accident. Therefore, always use child seats

when transporting children!

● In order for the child seat to provide the

best possible protection, it is very important

that the seat belt is correctly positioned.

Always observe the child seat

manufacturer's instructions on the correct

positioning of the belt webbing. Incorrectly

fitted seat belts can cause injuries even in

minor accidents.

Please note the following:

– Child seats are classified into different

groups depending on the height, age and

weight of the child.

– There are different attachment systems for

fixing child seats to the vehicle.

● After an accident, replace child restraints

that were in use at the time of the accident,

as they may have suffered damage that is

not visible to the naked eye.

For safety reasons, child seats should always be

mounted in the rear seat.

Volkswagen recommends the use of child seats

from its range of accessories. These child seats

have been designed and tested for use in

Rules on child seats

In the European Community, the ECE-R 44

regulation applies to child seats. Child seats

which are approved in accordance with this

regulation are

approval label. This label may contain, among

other things, the following information about

the child seat:

to which they belong and not all child seats are

suitable for all vehicles. Therefore, always check

whether the child will fit properly in the child

seat and whether the child seat can be securely

fastened in the vehicle.

Child seats by approval category

– Approval number

Child seats may have universal, semi-universal

or vehicle-specific approval status.

In the case of child seats approved in

accordance with ECE-R 44, the eight-digit

approval number on the ECE type-approval

label must begin with 03 or 04. This indicates

that the seat is approved. Older child seats with

a type approval number beginning with 01 or 02

are no longer permitted.

– Universal: Child seats with universal

approval can be fitted in all vehicles. It is not

necessary to consult a model list. In the case

of universal approval for ISOFIX, the child

seat must be additionally secured with a top

tether belt (Top Tether).

– Semi-universal: Semi-universal type-approval

requires, in addition to the standard

requirements of universal type-approval, the

operating instructions.

– Vehicle specific: Vehicle specific approval

requires a dynamic test of the child seat for

each vehicle model separately. Child seats

with vehicle specific approval also include a

list of vehicle models in which they can be

fitted.

Instructions for fitting a child seat

When installing a child seat, please observe the

following general information. They apply to all

child seats, irrespective of the child seat

mounting system.

– i-Size: it is not permitted to fit child seats

with the i-Size approval in this vehicle.

semi-universal approval, the size class is

Use of insertion guides

If the anchorage points for the child seats are

not directly accessible, insert guides can be used

to facilitate installation and removal of the child

seat. To do this, first attach the insert guides to

the anchorage points. Then attach the child

seat according to the installation instructions.

– X: seat not suitable for the attachment of

an ISOFIX or i-Size child seat of this group.

NOTICE

– IL-SU: suitable for fitting an ISOFIX child

seat with semi-universal approval. Please
