If you select the offroad Audi drive select mode,

the offroad ESC mode will be automatically used.

This mode is suited for driving offroad and is de-

signed for uneven terrain or loose ground.

– Accelerate carefully when driving on

smooth, slippery surfaces such as ice and

snow. The drive wheels can spin even when

these control systems are installed and this

can affect driving stability and increase the

risk of a collision.

Turning off ESC

For a more active control of the vehicle where the

stabilizing functions of the ESC cannot intervene,

the ESC can be turned off.

– As the vehicle load increases, especially the

roof load, the vehicle's center of gravity also

increases along with the risk of the vehicle

tipping. To reduce the risk of an accident, al-

ways adapt your driving style to the current

conditions and avoid sudden driving maneu-

vers.

– To turn off the ESC, press and hold the  but-

ton for more than three seconds. The  and

  indicator lights turn on.

– To completely reactivate the ESC stabilization

function, press the button again. The indicator

lights turn off.

Tips

WARNING

The ABS and ASR only function correctly when

all four wheels have a similar wear condition.

Different tire sizes can result in a reduction in

engine power.

– When the ESC is turned off or limited, there

will be no vehicle stabilization or it will be

limited. The driving wheels could spin and

the vehicle could swerve, especially on slick

or slippery road surfaces. When there is a

heavy vehicle load and sudden driving ma-

neuvers, it may not be possible to prevent

the vehicle from tipping under certain cir-

cumstances, which increases the risk of an

accident.

Operation

The  button (or , depending on the model)

for controlling the ESC is located in front of the

transmission selector in the center console. ESC

turns on automatically when the ignition is

turned on.

– Because of the increased risk of an accident,

only drive with the ESC turned off or limited

when it is necessary. Reactivate the ESC as

soon as possible.

Limiting ESC

It may make sense in some situations to limit the

ESC stabilization functions so that the wheels can

spin:

Tips

– If you select the Audi drive select* offroad

mode, hill descent assist will turn on.

– If the ESC is limited, turned off, or malfunc-

tioning, systems with an automatic braking

intervention function may not be fully avail-

able.

– Rocking the vehicle to free it when it is stuck

– Driving in deep snow, on unpaved ground, or

with snow chains

– Driving downhill while braking on loose ground

– Driving with axle articulation

The ESC can be limited in order to allow the

wheels to spin.

– If malfunctions occur in other systems or

certain driver assistance systems are active,

the ESC must be turned on by the system.

The ESC may turn on automatically and can-

not be operated with the button.

– To limit the ESC, press the  button briefly.

The  indicator light will turn on.

The following messages may appear, depending

on the vehicle equipment:

  /   Stabilization control (ESC/

ABS): malfunction! See owner's manual

There is a malfunction in the ABS or EDL. This al-

so causes the ESC to malfunction. The brakes still

function with their normal power, but ABS is not

active.

Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized

Audi Service Facility immediately to have the

malfunction corrected.

Other indicator lights

If  blinks while driving, the ESC is actively reg-

ulating. Operating noises may occur. If the indica-

tor light stays on, the ESC has been turned off

due to system needs. The indicator light turns off

when the system is fully functional.

General information

– Never damage, alter or remove the orange

high-voltage cable or disconnect it from the

high-voltage system.

– Never perform any work using cutting, shap-

ing or sharp-edged tools or heat sources

near the high-voltage system and high-volt-

age cables.

Introduction

Applies to: vehicles with plug-in hybrid drive

All work done on the high-voltage system must

only be performed by certified high-voltage tech-

nicians at authorized Audi dealers or authorized

Audi Service Facilities in accordance with Audi

guidelines.

– Gases that escape from the high-voltage

battery can be poisonous or flammable.

– Do not expose yourself to any leaking fluids

and do not come into contact with them.

– The high-voltage battery electrolyte fluid is

caustic. If electrolyte fluid comes into con-

tact with the skin, flush the affected area for

at least 15 minutes with clean water. Then

wash the affected area with soap. Have the

affected area examined by a medical profes-

sional.

The high-voltage system is composed of the fol-

lowing high-voltage components, among other

things: the high-voltage battery, the power elec-

tronics, the electric motor, the high-voltage A/C

compressor, the high-voltage heater, the charg-

ing system and charging port, and the orange

high-voltage wiring.

– In the event of a technical emergency, in-

form the responders that the vehicle is

equipped with a high-voltage battery.

The high voltage battery is located in the luggage

compartment underneath the cargo floor. You

must not service the high-voltage battery your-

self.

Note

The high-voltage system can be damaged if

the vehicle underbody comes into contact

with the ground. Immediately drive your vehi-

cle to an authorized repair facility and have it

inspected.

WARNING

The voltage in the high-voltage system is high

enough to cause fatal injuries. Touching dam-

aged high-voltage components can result in a

fatal electric shock. The components in the

high-voltage system are marked with a warn-

ing label which warns against the high-volt-

age.

Guidelines for dangerous situations

General safety guidelines

– The voltage level in the high-voltage system

is still dangerous and potentially life-threat-

ening when the ignition is turned off.

– Do not touch any of the contacts in the

charging port, for example when cleaning

the charging unit. If you would like to clean

the charging unit, use only a dry cloth and

no other tools, such a screwdriver or a

brush.

Dangerous situations may develop if messages

that indicate danger appear or if you notice the

smell of fire or gas. In dangerous situations, pro-

ceed as follows:

– Do not inhale escaping gases.

– Make sure that you and all other passengers

move away from the dangerous area to a safer

place, for example behind a guard rail.

– Contact emergency services.

– Never perform work on the orange high-

voltage cables or on other high-voltage

components. Only authorized repair facili-

ties that are certified may perform work on

the high-voltage system.

– Do not attempt to extinguish the fire yourself.

– Do not attempt to move the vehicle.



If this message appears, there is a risk of fire due

to a serious malfunction of the high-voltage bat-

tery. Proceed as follows:

– Make sure you and all other passengers

leave the dangerous area.

– Stop the vehicle immediately while taking the

traffic situation into account.

Conservative use of the high-voltage

battery

– Select a safe place outdoors that is not near

buildings or vehicles, roof overhangs, carports,

or similar structures.

Applies to: vehicles with plug-in hybrid drive

A plug-in hybrid vehicle is equipped with an elec-

tric and a conventional drive system. The electric

drive system is equipped with a high-voltage bat-

tery (also called a hybrid battery/traction bat-

tery) and supports the combustion engine in cer-

tain situations. The usage considerably influences

the service life of the high-voltage battery. Read

and observe the following information on conser-

vative use of the high-voltage battery:

– Turn on the emergency flashers if possible.

– Set the parking brake.

– Turn off the ignition.

– In order to support emergency services, be sure

to leave the key visible in the vehicle, for exam-

ple in the center console.

– Exit the vehicle immediately and make sure

there are no people or animals inside the vehi-

cle.

Audi recommends using alternating current (AC)

to charge the high-voltage battery at industrial

sockets, charging stations, or a wallbox. This will

allow you to achieve higher efficiency and a con-

siderably shorter charging time when compared

to charging with a household socket.

The components in the charging equipment

can trigger sparks, which can cause flamma-

ble or explosive fumes to ignite. To reduce

the risk of explosions, especially in garages,

make sure the Audi e-tron charging system

control unit is at least 19 inches (50 cm)

above the floor when charging.

Only charge at household sockets with the Audi

e-tron Charging System Compact under special

circumstances when it is not possible to charge

at an industrial alternating current (AC) socket or

at a public alternating current (AC) charging sta-

tion.

High-voltage batteries age over time, which re-

duces the available range. High-voltage batteries

can also age based on how they are used: fre-

quently charging the high-voltage battery com-

pletely can accelerate the aging of the battery

and reduce the available range.

– Never use the charging equipment with an

extension cord, a cable reel, a power strip,

or an adapter, for example, a travel adapter

or timer.

Charging time

The duration of the charging session may vary

based on the following factors:

– Do not touch the contacts on the vehicle

charging port or charging equipment.

– Do not insert any objects in the vehicle

charging port or in the charging equipment.

– Always protect the sockets and connections

from water, moisture and other fluids.

– Only use the charging equipment provided

by the factory for your vehicle, or the charg-

ing station cable.

– Sockets being used (household or industrial

sockets)

– Country-specific system voltage, current

strength and number of available phases

– Household connection

– Fluctuations in the system voltage

– The temperature outside the vehicle

– The temperature of the high-voltage battery

and the Audi charging system control unit

– Settings for the climate control inside the vehi-

cle

– Whether the ignition is on or off

Sockets that are installed incorrectly can

cause electric shock or fire when charging the

high-voltage battery using the vehicle charg-

ing connection.

Important safety precautions

them. If included, also refer to accompany-

ing manuals for provided charging systems.

– Monitor the Audi charging system if it is be-

ing used near children.

Short circuiting, electric shock, explosions,

fire, and severe burns can result from charg-

ing the battery incorrectly (for example by

disregarding general safety precautions, us-

ing unsuitable or damaged sockets and charg-

ing cables, or charging with unsuitable elec-

out use (more than one year), charge the

high-voltage battery to approximately 80%

capacity (second to the last charging bar)

ple, private property and company parking

lots). Depending on the country where the

vehicle is operated, charging with a mode 2

charging cable (meaning charging with the

Audi charging system) may be prohibited in

public areas. Contact an authorized Audi

dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility for

more information.

– Make sure that you always use the correct

charging equipment for the country in

which it is being used. Contact an author-

ized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service

Facility for more information.

Tips

– Your vehicle can only be charged at charging

stations that meet the requirements in the

respective country and meet the following

standards, at a minimum:

– Operate the Audi charging systems in power

networks that are properly grounded. Do

not operate with non-grounded power net-

works (such as IT networks).

– GB/T 18487.1 and GB/T 20234 (China)

– IEC 61851 and IEC 62196 (Europe)

– SAE J1772 (North America, Japan)

– You can use your Audi charging system if

there is a household or industrial connec-

tion available at the charging station.

– When charging the high-voltage battery us-

ing household/industrial sockets, the elec-

trical installation can be used at full capaci-

ty. Audi recommends having a qualified

electrician regularly inspect the electrical in-

stallations that are used for charging.

– If possible, disconnect Audi charging sys-

tems from the power network during a

thunderstorm.

Tips

Applies to: Audi charging systems

– For an uninterrupted charging session, Audi

recommends only charging using sockets

that are connected to a separately protected

circuit.

– Never submerge the Audi charging systems

or the connectors in water.

– Audi charging systems must only be cleaned

when the control unit is completely discon-

nected from the power supply and from the

vehicle. Use a dry towel to clean.

– To reduce the risk of overheating during op-

eration, do not place Audi charging systems

in direct sunlight for long periods of time. If

the control unit is overheated, the charging

session is automatically paused until the

temperature has lowered back within the

normal range.

– Audi charging systems are only intended for

use with Audi vehicles. These charging sys-

tems are not approved for use with vehicles

from other manufacturers.

Note

– Severely draining the high-voltage battery

can damage it. Once a 0 mi (0 km) electric

range is displayed, charge the high-voltage

and place it on the holder on the charging port

door.

Charging

– Insert the charging connector into the charging

port, and press upward on it lightly for approxi-

mately 5 seconds.

– Check if the charging mode shown 3 is the one

you would like to use for the charging session

ðpage 128. If necessary, you can change the

charging mode during the charging session.

While charging

The charging display on the charging unit 3 will



pulse green while charging. It will pulse

in the

instrument cluster. You can find the meaning of

the possible charging display colors under

ðpage 128.

The charging connector is locked while charging

and cannot be removed.

If the driver's door is opened while the ignition is

turned off, the current battery charge level and

the high-voltage battery range will be displayed

in the instrument cluster. If a charging session is

in progress, the remaining charging time will al-

so be displayed.

Connecting the charging cable

If you charge your vehicle at a charging station,

the following sequence of steps may vary. Follow

the manufacturer guidelines and operating in-

structions for the charging station.

Ending the charging session

You can interrupt or end the charging session at

any time:

Requirement: the “P” position must be selected,

the parking brake must be set, and drive ready

mode must have ended.

– Unlock the vehicle and press the 1 / 2 button

whose LED is illuminated.

– Remove the charging connector. If the charging

connector is not removed within 30 seconds, it

will automatically lock again and the charging

session may resume.

– Select the preferred charging mode so that the

vehicle either starts charging immediately, or

starts charging at a later time ðpage 130.

– If necessary, remove the charging cable from

the vehicle ðpage 132, Transport.

– Put the cap back on the charging port.

– Close the charging port door.

– Remove the cap from the charging cable if nec-

essary.

– Disconnect the charging cable from the power

supply if necessary or return it securely to the

charging station.

– First connect the charging cable to the power

supply, or remove it from the charging station.

– Unwind the charging cable completely.

– Unlock the vehicle.

– Reinstall any available protective caps on the

charging cable.

– If you are transporting the charging cable in the

vehicle, store it securely ðpage 132.

– To open the charging port door, press on the

right side of the door ðfig. 100.



If the charging connector cannot be removed, you

must unlock it manually ðpage 129.

from the charging station, authenticate yourself

again at the charging station and then try again

to disconnect the charging connector. If you still

the charging station, contact the charging sta-

tion operator.

Note

If you drive with the charging unit open, both

the charging port door and the electronics in-

stalled behind it could be damaged. Check

each time after charging if the port door is

locked before you start driving the vehicle.

WARNING

– Do not disconnect the charging cable from

the socket or the vehicle charging port while

the vehicle is charging. End the charging

session before removing the charging cable

from the socket in order to reduce the risk

of sparks that could damage the connector

contacts.

Tips

– If the parking brake is set, it could create

noises when the charging connector is con-

nected.

– Remove ice and snow in the charging unit

using a hand brush and solvent-free deicing

spray.

– If the charging unit is damaged, do not

charge using the charging port to reduce the

risk of injury.

– The vehicle reception systems, such as radio

reception, may be limited during charging.

– If the charging unit is damaged or the charg-

ing port door cannot close or is missing,

The charging display is an LED light on the charg-

ing unit 3 ðpage 127, fig. 101 that indicates

the charging status. The following table explains

the displays.

Meaning

When using the Audi charging system, make sure the power

plug is inserted in the power outlet. No power supply was recog-

nized even though the charging cable is plugged in. Have the

power supply or power supply system inspected. When using

the Audi charging system, check the status displays on the unit.

See an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility

for assistance if necessary.

Illuminated

Yellow

The vehicle is not secured from rolling away. Check if the “P” po-

sition is selected and the parking brake is set. If the LED contin-

ues to flash, see an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi

Service Facility for assistance.

Flashing

The charging connector may not be able to lock correctly in the

vehicle charging port. Check if the charging connector is insert-

ed correctly. Disconnect the charging connector, reconnect it to

the charging socket, and press it upward lightly for five seconds,

or use a different charging station. If the LED stays turned on,

there is a malfunction either in the vehicle charging system or at

the power source. See an authorized Audi dealer or authorized

Audi Service Facility for assistance if necessary.

Red

Illuminated

The outside temperature is too low or too high.

Selecting a charging mode

You can select if your vehicle should start charg-

ing immediately, or if it should start charging af-

ter a delay.

Manually releasing the charging connector

If you are not able to pull the charging connector

out of the vehicle charging port, there may be a

malfunction. You must use the manual release to

release the vehicle charging connector.

Immediate charging mode

The charging session will start immediately after

the charging connector has been plugged in and

the charging station has been activated, if re-

quired.

Requirement: the “P” position must be selected

and the vehicle must be unlocked.

If the charging connector still cannot be removed

malfunction. The charging connector could also

be frozen in place if the temperatures are below

freezing. See an authorized Audi dealer or au-

thorized Audi Service Facility for assistance in all

cases.

ther be set one time or to repeat at selected

Pay attention to the following information for

safe handling of the charging equipment:
