This function must be activated for each user  
proꢀle separately. Only when this function is  
activated will the drive program and ECO  
start/stop setting for the previous journey be  
saved for the respective user proꢀle.  
Function of the DIRECT SELECT lever  
Inꢁuencing variables that can inꢁuence this  
are, for example:

WARNING Risk of accident due to incor-

Fuel grade  
If the engine speed is higher than the idle  
speed and you engage the transmission posi-  
tion h or k, the vehicle may accelerate  
sharply.

The values displayed serve only as orienta-  
tion. The values for engine output and engine  
torque shown on the media display may devi-  
ate from the actual values.

If you engage the transmission position  
#
h or k when the vehicle is at a stand-  
still, always depress the brake pedal  
ꢀrmly and do not accelerate at the same  
time.  
Select Vehicle.  
The vehicle data is displayed.

Use the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch the trans-  
mission position. The current transmission posi-  
tion is displayed in the instrument display.

Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT  
SELECT lever upwards past the ꢀrst point of  
resistance.  
If children are leꢂ unsupervised in the vehicle,  
they could, in particular:  
Engaging neutral N

open doors, thereby endangering other  
persons or road users.  
#
Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT  
SELECT lever up or down to the ꢀrst point of  
resistance.  
R
get out and be struck by oncoming traꢃc.  
R
operate vehicle equipment and become  
trapped, for example.

To shiꢂ into neutral i with the vehicle  
switched on, push the selector lever up or  
down for several seconds to the ꢀrst point of  
resistance.  
In addition, the children could also set the  
vehicle in motion, for example by:  
Subsequently releasing the brake pedal will allow  
you to move the vehicle freely, e.g. to push it or  
tow it away.

releasing the parking brake.  
R
changing the transmission position.  
R
starting the vehicle.  
Proceed aas follows if you want the automatic  
transmission to remain in neutral i even if the  
vehicle is switched oꢄ or the driver's door is  
opened:

Never leave children unattended in the  
vehicle.

SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.

If you then exit the vehicle leaving the Smart-  
Key in the vehicle, the automatic transmission  
remains in neutral i.  
You open the driver's door when the vehicle is  
at a standstill or when driving at a very low  
speed and the transmission position is h or  
k.

Problems with the traansmisssion

Observe the notes on parking the vehicle  
(/ page 147).  
To maneuver with an open driver's door, open  
the driver's door while at a standstill and  
engage transmission position h or k again.  
The transmission has a faulty gear shiꢂ  
Possible cause:  
#
Depress the brake pedal until the vehicle  
comes to a standstill.  
At very low outside temperatures below  
approx. -4°F (-20°C), you may not be able to  
shiꢂ the transmission from j to another  
transmission position when the vehicle is  
switched oꢄ. If this is the case, only change  
the transmission position while the vehicle  
switched on.

The transmission is losing oil.  
#
When the vehicle is at a standstill, press but-  
ton j.  
When the transmission position display shows  
j, the park position is engaged. If no trans-  
mission position display j appears, secure  
the vehicle to prevent it from rolling away.  
#
Have the transmission checked at a qualiꢀed  
specialist workshop immediately.  
The acceleeration ccharacteristics get worse, and  
the transmiissionn nno longer shiꢂs.  
Possible cause:

Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT  
SELECT lever down past the ꢀrst point of  
resistance.

Stop the vehicle in accordance with the traꢃc

When the automatic transmission is in transmis-  
sion position h, it shiꢂs the gears automatically.  
This depends, among other things, on the follow-  
ing factors:  
Park position j is engaged automatically if one  
of the following conditions is met:

Shiꢂ the transmission to position j.  
#
Switch oꢄ the vehicle.

You switch the stationary vehicle oꢄ in trans-  
mission position h or k.

Wait at least ten seconds.

The selected drive program

Start the vehicle again.

If you pull and hold steering wheel paddle  
shiꢂer 1, the transmission shiꢂs to the low-  
est possible gear.

You could otherwise fail to recognize  
dangers.  
The gears shiꢂ automatically when manual shiꢂing  
is deactivated.  
Temporary setting:  
#
To deactivate: pull steering wheel paddle  
shiꢂer 2 and hold it in place.  
The transmission position display shows h.  
#
To activate: pull steering wheel paddle shiꢂer  
1 or 2.  
Manual shiꢂing is activated for a short time.  
The transmission position display shows p  
and the current gear.  
Permanent setting:

Change to drive program =(/ page 138).  
Select drive setting p (/ page 139).

How long the manual shiꢂing stays activated  
is dependent on various factors.

Manual shiꢂing can be automatically deactiva-  
ted in the following cases:  
Gearshiirecoommennddation  
The gearshiꢂ recommendation assists you in  
adopting an economical driving style.

Changing the drive program  
When the automatic transmission is shiꢂed to  
position h, you can manually shiꢂ it with the  
steering wheel paddle shiꢂer. If permitted, the

Glide mode function  
Glide mode can also be activated if you have  
selected the "Eco" setting for the drive in the  
drive program =.

NOTE Mercedes-AMG vehicles  
Glide mode is deactivated again if one of the con-  
ditions is no longer met.

You could otherwise fail to recognize  
dangers.  
Vehicles with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC:  
when Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is active,  
the glide mode function is not available.  
With an anticipatory driving style, Glide mode  
helps you to reduce fuel consumption.  
Glide mode can also be prevented by the following  
parameters:  
Glide mode is characterized by the following:

If gearshiꢂ recommendation 1 appears next  
to the transmission position display, shiꢂ to  
the recommended gear.

The combustion engine is disconnected from  
the drivetrain and continues to run in neutral.

Using kickdown  
Glide mode is activated if the following conditions  
are met:

Maximum acceleration: depress the accelera-  
tor pedal beyond the pressure point.

The speed is within a suitable range.  
To protect against engine overrev, the automatic  
transmission shiꢂs up to the next gear when maxi-  
mum engine speed has been reached.

Glide mode can be ended by pressing a steer-  
ing wheel paddle shiꢂer (/ page 143).

The road's course is suitable, e.g. no steep  
uphill or downhill inclines or tight curves.

You do not depress the accelerator or brake  
pedal (except for light brake applications).
