40 seconds aꢀer unlocking, it locks again. Anti-

To deactivate: brieꢃy press button 1 again.  
Deactivating the function of the SmartKey  
or  
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: if you deactivate the  
function of the SmartKey, the KEYLESS-GO func-  
tions are also deactivated. Access or drive author-  
ization by KEYLESS-GO is then no longer possible  
with that particular SmartKey. Activate the func-  
tion of the SmartKey so that all its functions will  
again be available.

Possible causes if the function of KEYLESS-GO is  
impaired:

If you wish to lock the vehicle entirely using  
the emergency key, ꢂrst press the button for  
locking from the inside while the driver's door  
is open. Then proceed to lock the driver's  
door using the emergency key.

Make sure that there is suꢁcient distance  
between the SmartKey and the potential  
source of interference.

To activate: press and hold button 2 for  
approximately ꢂve seconds until an acoustic  
signal sounds.

The vehicle is locked automatically when the vehi-  
cle is switched on and the wheels are turning  
faster than walking pace.  
The red indicator lamp on button 2 lights up  
once the vehicle is locked.

Remove the emergency key (/ page 68).  
To unlock: turn the emergency key counter-  
clockwise to position 1.  
Insert the emergency key as far as it will go  
into opening 1 in the cover.

Insert a suitable object, e.g. the emergency  
key, into opening 1 on the door lock.  
To lock: turn the emergency key clockwise to  
position 1.  
#
#
Pull and hold the door handle.  
#
To lock the leꢀ-hand side of the vehicle: turn  
the emergency key counter-clockwise as far  
as it will go.  
Carefully press the cover onto the lock cylin-  
der until it engages and is seated ꢂrmly.  
Pull the cover on the emergency key as  
straight as possible away from the vehicle until  
it releases.

To lock the right-hand side of the vehicle: turn  
the emergency key clockwise as far as it will  
go.

NOTE Damage to the trunk lid by obsta-  
cles above the vehicle  
The trunk lid swings upwards when it is  
opened.  
If the locked door is then closed, it can no longer  
be opened from the outside.  
#
Therefore, make sure that there is suꢁ-  
cient clearance above the trunk lid.

Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS: Make a  
kicking movement with your foot below the  
bumper (/ page 75).

DANGER Risk of exhaust gas poisoning  
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust  
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust  
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the trunk  
lid is open when the vehicle is running, espe-  
cially if the vehicle is in motion.  
#
Pull remote operating switch 1 until the  
trunk lid opens.  
#
Always switch oꢄ the vehicle before  
opening the trunk lid.  
or  
#
#
Press and hold the p button on the Smart-  
Key.  
Never drive with the trunk lid open.

HANDS-FREE ACCCESS function

Closing the trunk lid  
Note that the trunk lid will not be locked if the fol-  
lowing situation occurs:

WARNING Risk of injury from unsecured  
items in the vehicle  
R
You have locked the vehicle and close the  
trunk lid while a SmartKey belonging to the  
vehicle is inside the vehicle.  
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or  
not secured suꢁciently, they could slip, tip  
over or be thrown around and thereby hit vehi-  
cle occupants.

R
A second SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is  
not detected outside the vehicle.  
There is a risk of injury, particularly in the  
event of sudden braking or a sudden change  
in direction.  
Automatic SmartKey recognition is only an aid  
and is not a substitute for your attentiveness.  
#
Before locking, ensure that at least one  
SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is outside  
the vehicle.  
#
Always stow objects in such a way that  
they cannot be thrown around.  
#
Before the journey, secure objects, lug-  
gage or loads against slipping or tipping  
over.  
#
To close the trunk lid: pull the trunk lid down-  
wards using the handle recess and push it  
closed.  
With HANDS-FREE ACCESS you can open the  
trunk lid by performing a kicking movement under  
the bumper.  
Observe the notes on loading the vehicle.  
Notes on closing the trunk lid: your vehicle is  
equipped with automatic SmartKey recognition. If  
a SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is detected in  
the vehicle, the trunk lid will not be locked and will  
pop open again.  
Observe the notes when opening the trunk lid  
(/ page 74).

When making the kicking movement, make sure  
that you are standing ꢂrmly on the ground. You  
could otherwise lose your balance, e.g. on ice.

WARNING Risk of burns caused by a hot  
exhaust system  
The vehicle exhaust system can become very  
hot. If you use HANDS-FREE ACCESS, you  
could burn yourself by touching the exhaust  
system.  
Observe the following notes:  
R
The SmartKey is behind the vehicle.  
R
Stand at least 12 in (30 cm) away from the  
vehicle while performing the kicking move-  
ment.  
#
Always ensure that you only make a kick-  
ing movement within the detection range  
of the sensors.  
R
R
R
Do not come into contact with the bumper  
while making the kicking movement.

NOTE Damage to the vehicle caused by  
unintentionally opening the trunk lid  
Do not carry out the kicking movement too  
slowly.  
If several consecutive kicking movements are not  
successful, wait ten seconds.  
The kicking movement must be towards the  
vehicle and back again.

When using an automatic car wash  
When using a high pressure cleaner  
System limits  
The system may be impaired or may not function  
in the following cases:

Deactivate the function of the SmartKey  
in these situations.

The sensors are dirty, e.g. due to road salt or  
snow.

Make sure that the SmartKey is at a min-  
imum distance of 10 ꢀ (3 m) away from  
the vehicle.

The kicking movement is made using a pros-  
thetic leg.

The trunk lid could be opened unintentionally, in  
the following situations:  
Unlocking and opening thee trunk from inside with  
the emergency release  
Side windows  
Opening and closing the sidee windowws  
R
A person's arms or legs are moving in the sen-  
sor detection range, e.g. when polishing the  
vehicle or picking up objects.  
Requirements:  
R
The 12 V vehicle battery is connected and  
&
WARNINGG Risk of entrapment when open-  
ing a side window  
charged.  
R
Objects are moved or placed behind the vehi-  
cle, e.g. the fuel pump hose, charging cable or  
luggage.  
When opening a side window, parts of the  
body could be drawn in or become trapped  
between the side window and window frame.  
R
Clamping straps, tarps or other coverings are  
pulled over the bumper.  
#
When opening, make sure that nobody is  
touching the side window.  
R
A protective mat with a length reaching over  
the trunk sill down into the detection range of  
the sensors is used.  
#
If someone is trapped, release the but-  
ton immediately or pull it in order to  
close the side window again.  
R
The protective mat is not secured correctly.  
&
WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when  
closing a side window  
Deactivate the function of the SmartKey  
(/ page 67) or do not carry the SmartKey about  
your person in such situations.  
When closing a side window, body parts could  
be trapped in the closing area in the process.

When closing, make sure that no body  
parts are in the closing area.  
#
Press the emergency release button 1

When the vehicle is switched oꢄ, you can con-  
tinue to operate the side windows.

If someone is trapped, release the but-  
ton immediately or press the button in  
order to reopen the side window.  
This function is available for around four minutes  
or until a front door is opened.

children operate the side windows  
Automaticc reversing function of the siide windowws  
If an obstacle impedes a side window during the  
closing process, the side window will open again  
automatically. The automatic reversing function is  
only an aid and is not a substitute for your atten-  
tiveness.  
Children could become trapped if they operate  
the side windows, particularly when unatten-  
ded.  
#
Activate the child safety lock for the rear  
passenger compartment side windows.  
#
During the closing process, make sure that no  
body parts are in the closing area.  
#
When leaving the vehicle, always take the  
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.  
&
WARNING Risk of becoming trapped  
despite there being reversing protection  
on the side window

Never leave children unattended in the  
vehicle.

The term "sliding sunroof" also refers to the  
panoramic sliding sunroof.  
If you close a side window again immediately  
aꢀer it has been blocked, the side window will  
close with increased or maximum force. The  
reversing function is then not active and body  
parts may become trapped.  
If the side window is obstructed again and  
reopens again immediately:  
&
WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when  
the sliding sunroof is being opened and  
closed  
#
Immediately aꢀer this, pull and hold the corre-  
#
sponding button again until the side window  
has closed and hold the button for at least one  
more second (follow-up adjustment).  
The side window will be closed without the  
automatic reversing function.  
Make sure that no parts of the body are  
in the closing area.  
Body parts may become trapped in the range  
of movement.  
#
To stop the closing process, release the  
button or press the button again to  
reopen the side window.

Snow and ice may cause the sliding sunroof to  
malfunction.

key with you and lock the vehicle.

Open the sliding sunroof only if it is free  
of snow and ice.  
The panorama roof with power tilt/sliding  
panel may be raised to allow ventilation of the  
vehicle interior.

Check whether the sliding sunroof can be  
raised or opened when a roof luggage rack is  
installed.

In particular, the reversing function does not

and release it.

rear, it will automatically be lowered slightly at  
higher speeds. At low speeds, it will be raised  
again automatically.
