Practical advice -> OPERATING FAULTS for Your Renault Scenic 4 Door Second Generation (2003-2009)

OPERATING FAULTS  
The following advice will enable you to carry out rapid temporary repairs. For safety reasons you should always contact  
a RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.  
Use of the RENAULT Card  
CAUSES  
REMEDIAL ACTION  
- The RENAULT Card does not work  
for locking or unlocking the doors.  
Vehicle

Use the emergency key (refer to the  
“Spare key” in Section 1).  
electromagnetic radiation zone.  
Discharged battery.  
Other equipment is operating on the  
same frequency as the Card (mobile  
phone, etc.).  
Stop using the devices or use the  
emergency key (refer to the section  
entitled “Spare key” in Section 1).  
Card battery flat.  
Replace the battery.

FAULTS (continued)  
When starter is activated  
CAUSES  
REMEDIAL ACTION  
- There is no response, the indicator  
lights fail to light up and the starter  
does not turn.  
Battery  
lead  
disconnected  
or  
Check battery terminals: scrape and  
clean if oxidised and re-tighten.  
terminals oxidised.  
Discharged battery.  
Connect another battery to the faulty  
battery.  
Battery unserviceable.  
Replace the battery.  
Do not push the vehicle if the steering  
column is locked.  
- Warning light bulbs go dim and  
starter turns very slowly.  
Battery leads not tightened correctly,  
battery terminals oxidised.  
Check battery terminals: scrape and  
clean if oxidised and re-tighten.  
Discharged battery.  
Connect another battery to the faulty  
battery.

FAULTS (continued)  
When starter is activated  
CAUSES  
REMEDIAL ACTION  
- The engine will not start.  
Starting procedure incorrect.  
Refer to the information on Starting  
and Stopping the engine in Section 2.  
The RENAULT Card does not work.  
Insert the card in the card reader in  
order to start the engine.  
Refer to the information on Starting  
and Stopping the engine in Section 2.  
- The engine is difficult to start in  
damp weather or after washing.  
Incorrect ignition, ignition system  
damp.  
Dry spark plug leads and ignition coil.  
Let the engine cool down.  
- The engine is difficult to start when  
hot.  
Faulty carburation (bubbles of  
vaporised fuel in the circuit).  
Poor compression.  
Contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
- The engine cannot be switched off.  
Electronic fault.  
Press the starter button quickly five  
times.  
- The steering column remains  
locked.  
Steering wheel locked.  
Move the steering wheel while  
pressing the engine start button (see  
“Starting the engine” in Section 2).

FAULTS (continued)  
On the open road  
CAUSES  
REMEDIAL ACTION  
- Abnormal white smoke from the  
exhaust.  
Mechanical fault: damaged cylinder  
head gasket.  
Stop the engine.  
Contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
- Vibrations.  
Tyres not inflated to correct pressures,  
incorrectly balanced or damaged.  
Check tyre pressures. If this is not the  
problem, have them checked by a  
RENAULT Dealer.  
- Coolant boiling in the expansion  
bottle.  
Mechanical defect: cylinder head  
gasket blown, faulty coolant pump.  
Stop the engine.  
Contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
Engine cooling fan not working.  
Check appropriate fuse, otherwise  
contact a RENAULT Dealer.

FAULTS (continued)  
On the open road  
CAUSES  
REMEDIAL ACTION  
- Smoke under the bonnet.  
Short circuit.  
Stop, turn the ignition off, disconnect  
the battery.  
Coolant circuit fault.  
Contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
- The oil pressure warning light  
comes on:  
- while turning or braking,  
The level is too low.  
Top up the engine oil level (refer to the  
information on topping up and filling  
with engine oil in Section 4).  
Contact the nearest RENAULT Dealer.  
Stop: contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
- at idle speed,  
- is slow to go out or remains lit  
when accelerating.  
Low oil pressure.  
Low oil pressure.  
- The engine lacks power.  
Clogged air filter.  
Fuel supply faulty.  
Replace the cartridge.  
Check the fuel level.  
Faulty  
spark  
plugs,  
incorrect  
Contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
electrode gaps.  
- Unstable idle speed or the engine  
stalls.  
Poor compression (spark plugs,  
ignition, air leak).  
Contact a RENAULT Dealer.

FAULTS (continued)  
On the open road  
CAUSES  
REMEDIAL ACTION  
- Steering wheel hard to turn:  
- assistance overheating,  
- weak or old battery.  
Leave to cool.  
Recharge or replace the battery.  
- The engine overheats. The coolant  
temperature indicator light comes  
on (or the gauge needle moves into  
the red zone).  
Coolant pump: belt stretched or  
broken.  
Engine cooling fan not working.  
Stop the vehicle and switch off the  
engine. Contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
Coolant leaks.  
Check the condition of hoses and  
clips.  
Check the expansion bottle: it should  
contain coolant. If it does not, top it  
up (once it has cooled). Take care not  
to scald yourself. This action is only  
temporary: contact your RENAULT  
Dealer as soon as possible.  
Radiator: never fill a hot radiator with cold coolant if a considerable quantity has been lost. After any operation  
on the vehicle which has involved even partial draining of the cooling system, it must be refilled with a new  
mixture prepared in the correct proportions. Reminder: only products approved by Renault's Technical  
Department may be used for this purpose.

FAULTS (continued)

REMEDIAL ACTION  
- The wipers do not work.  
Wiper blades stuck.  
Free the blades before using the  
wipers.  
Contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
Broken windscreen wiper fuse.  
Broken rear screen wiper fuse  
(intermittent, permanently stopped).  
Replace it.  
Motor faulty.  
Contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
- The wiper does not stop  
Faulty electrical controls.  
Blown bulb.  
Contact a RENAULT Dealer.  
Replace the bulb.  
- Direction indicators flashing more  
quickly.  
- The indicator  
lights  
do not work.  
On one side:  
- blown bulb,  
Replace the bulb.  
- faulty earth connection.  
Find the earth wire which is attached  
to a metal body part, scrape the end of  
the earth wire and re-attach it  
carefully.  
On both sides:  
- fuse blown,  
Replace the fuse.  
- faulty flasher sensor.  
To replace, contact  
Dealer.

REMEDIAL ACTION  
- The headlights  
no longer operate.  
One only:  
- bulb blown,  
Replace bulb.  
- disconnected wire or incorrectly-  
positioned connector,  
Check and reconnect the wire or the  
connector.  
- faulty earth connection.  
See above.  
Both:  
- If the circuit is fused:  
Check fuse and replace if necessary.  
- The headlights do not switch off.  
- Traces of condensation in the lights.  
Faulty electrical controls.  
Contact your RENAULT Dealer.  
This is not a fault. The presence of  
traces of condensation in lights is a  
natural phenomenon linked to  
variations in temperature.  
These traces soon disappear when the  
lights are switched on.
