Connectivity for Your Volkswagen California Van Third Generation (2015-2024)

Never place any objects on the MultiFlex board while the vehicle is in motion.
The multi-flex board must always be fitted in the seat rails and must be securely engaged when the vehicle is in
motion.
Cyber security
Cyber security refers to measures designed to reduce the risk of unauthorised access by malware or an internet
attack on vehicle functions, data and control units.
What are connectivity components?
Control units for data transmission, interfaces, and also media and diagnostic connections are connectivity
components via which information and data can be exchanged between the vehicle and external devices or the
internet. Not all vehicles are fitted with connectivity components.
Connectivity components are the key locations for cyber security. Connectivity components are also equipped with
security mechanisms designed to minimise the risk of unauthorised access to vehicle systems.
The connectivity components include the following in particular:
Diagnostic socket.
Control unit with built-ineSIM
card, e.g. the We Connect control unit (OCU).
Mobile phone interface.
App-Connect.
Wi-Fi
hotspot.
NFC
radio technology.
Bluetooth® interface.
USB
port.
SD
card slot.
SIM
card slot.
Security mechanisms
The software and security mechanisms in the vehicle are subject to continuous further development. As with
computers and mobile telephone operating systems, the software and security mechanisms in the vehicle can also be
updated at irregular intervals.
Software updates improve the security, stability and running speeds of the vehicle systems in vehicles.
WARNING
In spite of the integrated security mechanisms, malware can cause malfunctions in control units and vehicle
functions. This can result in serious accidents and fatal injuries.
Reduce speed in a controlled manner if the vehicle functions or reacts differently than usual.
Go to the nearest suitably qualified workshop.
Malware can also access data and information that are stored in control units, in the Infotainment system and
on connected data media and paired mobile telephones.
314
Minimising risk
You can also take your own steps to minimise the risk of unauthorised access to vehicle systems and functions:
Use only data media, Bluetooth devices and mobile telephones in the vehicle than do not contain manipulated data
or malware.
Have the vehicle serviced, repaired and maintained only by a correspondingly qualified workshop.
WARNING
Computers, data media and mobile telephones that are connected to the internet or that are used in public and
private networks may be infected by manipulated data or have malware installed on them.
Protect computers, data media and mobile telephones by means of a suitable anti-virus program and generally
known precautionary measures.
Regularly update the appropriate anti-virus program with the system updates or upgrades from the provider.
Introduction
The system update is a preventive measure, e.g. to optimise the software and to provide protection against
malware.
A system update allows the software of control units in the vehicle to be updated.
There are two possibilities, depending on vehicle and country:
System update by a qualified workshop.
System update by Volkswagen by means of anover-the-air update.
What is a system update?
The “system update” function enables Volkswagen to update the control unit software in the vehicle without you
having to attend a qualified workshop.
Each system update has two phases – download followed by software installation.
The “system update” function is only available in some countries and is not available for all vehicles.
How do I know when a system update is available?
The switched-on Infotainment system indicates that a system update is available.
If several system updates are available for the vehicle at the same time, one system update must first be installed
successfully before the next system update can be executed.
WARNING
It is possible in very rare cases that a control unit will not function properly after a software installation process.
Do not use the vehicle. Contact Customer Care at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
WARNING
If the digital instrument cluster does not function after software installation, no instruments, warning lamps,
symbols or text messages can be displayed. Driving with a digital instrument cluster that is not working can cause
accidents and fatal injuries.
Do not use the vehicle. Contact Customer Care at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
A system update may delete any previous action designed to enhance performance or efficiency, such as
engine tuning, that was not performed by Volkswagen AG.
315
Depending on equipment, release notes can be displayed once before or after a system update. They contain details
of the changes to the vehicle status. The release notes are only displayed once and cannot be viewed again.
The system update does not update anyIn-Car
Apps.
Basic requirements for the system update
The following basic requirements must be met in order to download a system update and install the software.
General conditions
The “system update” function is available in your country.

Connect.
We Connect may not be available on all Infotainment systems.
We Connect is not available in all countries and is subject to country-dependent limitations on the usage period.
Some We Connect services are not compatible with all available Infotainment systems.
321
Internet connection
To use the online services, the Infotainment system has to be connected to the Internet via theeSIM
card of the factory-fitted We Connect control unit (OCU). You can set up the eSIM card Internet connection to
automatically use all We Connect services except “Streaming & Internet”.
You can purchase optional data packages in order to use the “Wi-Fi hotspot” and “Streaming and Internet” services,
or alternatively you can use a mobile telephone as a hotspot. You need a SIM
card with a data plan to use the “Wi-Fi hotspot” and “Streaming & Internet” services via a mobile hotspot.
Legal requirements
When using We Connect and We Connect Plus services, information about the vehicle is transmitted and processed
online. This data can also indirectly provide information about the respective driver, e.g. driving behaviour. As the
party concluding a We Connect and We Connect Plus contract with Volkswagen, you must ensure that data
protection and privacy rights are guaranteed when your vehicle is used by family members, friends or other drivers.
You must inform the respective driver in advance that the vehicle is transmitting and receiving data online and that
you can view this data.
Failure to observe this obligation to inform can infringe certain rights of vehicle occupants.
Tracking services: Ask all vehicle occupants
Tracking services require geodata and vehicle data to determine whether the vehicle is complying with set speed
limits, where the vehicle is parked, or whether the vehicle is being used in a geographically-defined area. This
information is displayed in the user area of the “myVolkswagen” web page and in the We Connect app.
Therefore, before driving, ask all occupants if they agree to use of the activated services. If an occupant does not
agree, deactivate the services if possible or exclude the occupant from using the vehicle.
Personal data
Volkswagen protects your personal data and uses it only to the extent permitted by law, or if you have consented to
its use. Further information on data processing in relation to We Connect and We Connect Plus services can be found
in the current version of the privacy policy which is available on the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles website.
Permanent transfer of the vehicle
If you purchased the vehicle second-hand or another person has transferred it to you for permanent use,We Connect
and We Connect Plus may already be activated and the previous user may still be able to view collected data and
control certain vehicle functions via We Connect and We Connect Plus.
The previous owner of the vehicle must remove the vehicle from their Connect Fleet” profile if they used
Connect Fleet corporate fleet management. If the previous owner does not remove the vehicle, they will be able to
continue to view the data collected by Connect Fleet. A corresponding message appears whenWe Connect services
are activated if the vehicle is still in use in Connect Fleet. Additionally, the Connect Fleet” service in the vehicle is
activated and the globe icon in the Infotainment system lights up white to show that the vehicle is transmitting data,
even without a registered primary user.
In the Infotainment system you can see whether a person is assigned to your vehicle as the primary user. In this case,
you can register yourself as the primary user for the vehicle and automatically remove the previous primary user.
Alternatively, you can permanently delete the previous user as the primary user directly in the Infotainment system or
can set the vehicle to offline mode to restrict your vehicle’s communication with the Volkswagen data server and to
limit processing of vehicle-related data and personal details.
322
Interference
Even when the above-mentioned requirements for using the services are met, the functionality of theWe Connect
services can be impaired or interrupted due to factors that lie outside the control of Volkswagen AG. Such factors
include in particular:
Maintenance, repairs, deactivations, software updates and technical changes to your service provider’s
telecommunication systems, satellites, servers and databases.
The telecommunications provider has changed the mobile telecommunication standard for transferring mobile
data, e.g. from UMTS
to EDGE or GPRS.

Primary user
or
The “primary user” role is intended for the vehicle keeper or for a vehicle user who has only temporary
authorisation, e.g. a lessee or company car driver. The primary user has unrestricted rights and can assign
additional rights to other users of the vehicle by inviting them as secondary users.
If a new primary user legitimises themselves for the vehicle, the previous primary user will automatically lose their
primary user role.
Secondary user
or
The “Secondary user” user role is intended for users who also use the vehicle regularly. Secondary users are
assigned by the primary user: the primary user must invite the secondary user to use the vehicle. The primary user
can delete secondary users at any time.
Guest users
The “Guest user” user role is intended for users who use a vehicle occasionally or only once. Guest users can log in
themselves in every vehicle with service capability and involvement of the primary user is not necessary. Every
vehicle user can delete the guest user in the vehicle at any time. The guest user has only restricted access to certain
online services.
Anonymous guest
The “Anonymous guest” user role is a non person-specific account that exists locally in the vehicle and cannot be
synchronised with the server. The “Anonymous guest” user role is intended for anonymous users. Anonymous
guests are persons who have access to the vehicle but do not log in. There is only one anonymous guest account in
vehicles with personalisation, and it cannot be deleted.
If the “Anonymous guest” role is activated in the vehicle, all users logged into the vehicle will be logged out
temporarily.

Legal requirements
Information about the vehicle is transmitted and processed online when you useConnect Fleet. This data can also
indirectly provide information about the respective driver, e.g. driving behaviour. As the party concluding a
Connect Fleet contract with Volkswagen, you must ensure that data protection and privacy rights are guaranteed
when your vehicle is used by family members, friends or other drivers. You must inform the respective driver in
advance that the vehicle is transmitting and receiving data online and that you can view this data.
Failure to observe this obligation to inform can infringe certain rights of vehicle occupants.
Tracking services: Ask all vehicle occupants
Tracking services require geodata, e.g. parking position, and vehicle data to determine where the vehicle is parked, or
whether the vehicle is being used in a geographically defined area. This information is displayed on the Connect Fleet
web portal (→ Connect Fleet).
Therefore, before driving, ask all occupants if they agree to use of the activated services. If an occupant does not
agree, deactivate the services if possible or exclude the occupant from using the vehicle.
Personal data
As the client(customer) is primarily responsible for the processing of personal data that is required to use the
services, the prerequisite for the provision of the services is the conclusion of a separate data protection agreement
for the processing of personal data on behalf of the client (“data protection agreement”) between the client and
Volkswagen AG (contractor).
As the contractor, Volkswagen AG processes the personal data specified in more detail in the data protection
agreement within the framework of the Connect Fleet contract only on the basis of documented instructions from
the customer.
The respective Connect Fleet customer (client) is responsible for the processing of data about drivers of the fleet
vehicles within the framework of Connect Fleet services, and they will be available to answer any questions you may
have about data processing in connection with the use of Connect Fleet services. We only process this data on behalf
of and according to the instructions of our Connect Fleet customers (clients) in accordance with a concluded Privacy
Policy.
