tion contains important information concerning  
the driver and passenger supplemental front air  
bags, side air bags (if so equipped) and pre-  
tensioner seat belt.

WARNING:  
S• upplemental front air bags:  
The. supplemental front aꢂr bags ordꢂ-  
narꢂly wꢂll not ꢂnflate in the event of a  
sꢂde ꢂmpact, rear ꢂmpact, roll over, or  
lower severꢂty frontal collisꢂon. Always  
wear your seat belts to help reduce the  
rꢂsk or severity of ꢂnjuꢃ in varꢂous kꢂnds  
of accidents.  
Supplemental front aꢂr bag system: This  
system can help cushion the impact force to the  
head and chest of the driver and front passenger  
in certain frontal collisions.  
Supplemental sꢂde air bag system (if so  
equipped): This system can help cushion the  
impact force to the head and the chest area of  
the driver and front passenger in certain side  
impact collisions. The side air bag is designed to  
inflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted.

The seat belts and the supplemental  
front air bags are most effectꢂve when  
you are sitting back and upright in the  
seat. Air bags inflate wꢂth great force. If  
you are unrestraꢂned, leanꢂng foꢄard,  
sittꢂng sꢂdeways orout of position in any  
way, you are at greater risk of ꢂnjuꢅ or  
death ꢂn a crash and may also receꢂve  
serꢂous orfatal ꢂnjuries from the supple-  
mental front air bag if you are up  
agaꢂnst it when ꢂt ꢂnflates.  
Position the spacer and child restraint anchor-  
age fitting as illustrated and tighten the bolt  
securely with a proper hand tool.  
These supplemental restraint systems are de-  
signed to supplement the crash protection  
provided by the driver and front passenger seat  
belts and are not a substꢂtute for them. Seat  
belts should always be correctly worn and the  
driver and front passenger seated a suitable  
distance away from the steering wheel, instru-  
ment panel and front door finishers. (See "Seat  
belts" earlier in this section for instructions and  
precautions on seat belt usage.)

Use a bolt of 7.9375 mm (5/16 in) ꢂn  
dꢂameter 18 UNC-2A and 30 mm (1.18 ꢂn)  
long.

Do not ꢂnstall chꢂld restraints wꢂth an  
anchorage fitting material thꢂckness  
more than 3.0 mm (0.1 18 in).  
Sit upright and well back.  
Use a lock washer wꢂth a thꢂckness of  
2.21 mm (0.0870 ꢂn) maximum.

front occupants. They can help save lives and  
reduce serious injuries. However, an inflating air  
seat) is designed to inflate in higher severity side  
collisions, although it may inflate if the forces in  
another type of collision are similar to those of a  
higher severity side impact. It is designed to  
inflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted.  
It may not inflate in certain side collisions. Ve-  
hicle, damage (or lack of it) is not always an  
indication of proper side air bag operation.  
Front aꢂr bag equꢂpped modeꢌs: The driver  
supplemental air bag is located in the center of  
the steering wheel; the front passenger supple-  
mental air' bag is mounted in the dashboard  
above the glove box. The air bags are designed  
to inflate in higher severity frontal collisions,  
although they may inflate if the forces in another  
type of collision are similar to those of a higher  
severity frontal impact. They may not inflate in  
certainfrontal collisions. Vehicle damage (or lack  
of it) is not always an indication of proper  
supplemental air bag operation.  
No unauthorꢂzed changes shouꢌd be  
made ꢍo any components or wꢂrꢂng of  
ꢍhe suppꢑementaꢌ fronꢍ aꢂr bag or sꢂde  
aꢂr bag system. Thꢂs ꢂs to prevent accꢂ-  
denꢍaꢑ ꢂrifꢌaꢍꢂon of the aꢂr bag or sꢂde aꢂr  
bag or damage to the aꢂr bag system.  
* The SRS wꢂrꢂng harness connectors are  
yeꢑꢌow and/or orange for easy ꢂdentꢂfꢂ-

ꢂng ꢂncꢑudes changes ꢍo ꢍhe sꢍeerꢂng  
wheeꢑ and the ꢂnstrument paneꢑ, and the  
frontseats assembꢑy by pꢌacꢂng maꢍerꢂaꢌ  
over ꢍhe steerꢂng wheeꢌ pad and above  
ꢍhe dashboard and near the seaꢍback of  
ꢍhe fronꢍ seat or by ꢂnsꢍaꢌꢌꢂng addꢂtꢂonaꢑ  
trꢂm materꢂaꢌ around ꢍhese sysꢍems.  
The seat belts should be correctly worn and the  
driver and passenger seated upright as far a�  
practical away from the steering wheel or dash  
board. Since the air bags and side air bag inflate  
quickly in order to help protect the front occu-  
pants, the force of the air bag or side air bag  
inflating can increase the risk of injury if the  
occupant is too close to or is against the air bag  
module or side air bag module during inflation.  
When the supplemental front air bag or side air  
bag inflates, a fairly loud noise may be heard,  
followed by release of smoke. This smoke is not  
harmful and does not indicate a fire, but care  
should be taken not to inhale it, as it may cause  
irritation and 'choking. Those with a history of  
breathing trouble should get fresh air promptly.

The front seat pre-tensioner seat belt system  
activates in conjunction with the air bag. Work-  
ing with the seat belt retractor, it helps tighten  
the seat belt the instant the vehicle becomes  
involved in certain types of collisions, thereby  
restraining seat occupants.

DRIVER AIR BAG SYSTEM  
This Supplemental Restraint System section  
contains important information concerning the  
driver air bag and pre-tensioner seat belt. The  
Supplemental Restraint System Air Bag can  
help reduce impact force to the driver in certain  
frontal collisions. The air bag is designed to  
sꢖppꢑꢎmꢎnt the crash protection provided by  
the driver seat belt. and is not a sꢖbstꢂtꢖtꢎ for  
it. The seat belts should always be correctly  
worn and the driver seated a suitable distance  
from the steering wheel. (See "Seat belts" earlier  
in this section for instructions and precautions  
on seat belt usage.)

AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT  
In vehicles equipped with a passenger air bag  
system, use rear-facing child restraints only on  
the rear seats. When installing child restraints in  
yourvehicle, always carefully observe the manu-  
facturer's instructions.  
Warning labels about the air bag system are  
placed in the vehicle.  
The supplemental restraint system (SRS) air bag  
warning light, displayed in the instrument panel,  
monitors the circuits of the front and side (if so  
equipped) air bag systems and pre-tensioner  
seat belt (if so equipped). The ci�cuits monitored  
by the SRS air bag warning light are all sensors,  
air bag modules and all related wiring and  
pre-tensioner seat belt.

If your vehicle is equipped with a passenger air  
bag, you will find an air bag warning label  
attached to the passenger side of the instrument  
panel.  
After turning the ignition switch to the ON  
position, the SRS air bag warning light will  
illuminate. The SRS air bag warning light will turn  
off after about 7 seconds if the system is  
operational.
