PRECAUTIONS ON SUPPLEMENTAL RE-
STRAINT SYSTEM (SRS)
T32A130827-472B749A-1D52-40E6-A55D-E253224FD34B
This Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) section
contains important information concerning the driver’s
and passenger’s supplemental front-impact air bags,
supplemen tal side-impa ct air bags, supplemental
curtain side-impact air bags and pre-tensioner seat
belts.
Supplemental front-impact air bag system
T32A130827-B8254390-3B61-40FC-91DE-1AC76EF9CA11
This system can help cushion the impact force to the
head and chest area of the driver and/or front
passenger in certain frontal collisions. The supple-
mental front-impact air bag is designed to inflate on the
front where the vehicle is impacted.
Supplemental side-impact air bag system (if
equipped)
GUID-86134849-D1CC-4A18-B616-BEDE533187A6
This system can help cushion the impact force to the
chest area of the driver and front passenger in certain
side-impact collisions. The supplemental side-impact
air bag is designed to inflate on the side where the
vehicle is impacted.
Supplemental curtain side-impact air bag
system (if equipped)
GUID-9482082F-6DCB-432F-9FD0-9A1EB3E05C4C
This system can help cushion the impact force to the
head of the driver and passengers in front and rear
outboard seating positions in certain side-impact
collisions. The supplemental curtain side-impact air
bag is designed to inflate on the side where the vehicle
is impacted.
The SRS is designed to supplement the accident
protection provided by the driver’s and passenger’s
seat belts and is not designed to substitute for them.
The SRS can help save lives and reduce serious
injuries. However, inflating air bags may cause abra-
sions or other inju ries. A ir bags do not provide
protection to the lower body. Seat belts should always
be correctly worn and the occupants should always be
seated a suitable distance away from the steering
wheel and instrument panel. (See “Seat belts” (P.1-9).)
The air bags inflate quickly in order to help protect the
occupants. The force of the air bags inflating can
increase the risk of injury if the occupants are too close
to, or are against, the air bag modules during inflation.
The air bags will deflate quickly after deployment.
The SRS operates only when the ignition switch
is in the “ON” position.
When the ignition switch is in the “ON” position,
the SRS air bag warning light illuminates for
about 7 seconds and then turns off. This
indicates that the SRS air bag system is opera-
tional. (See “SRS air bag warning light” (P.1-31).)

WARNING:
. The supplemental front-impact air bags
ordinarily will not inflate in the event of a
side impact, rear impact, rollover, or lower
severity frontal collision. Always wear the
seat belts to help reduce the risk or severity
of injury in accidents.
. The seat belts and the supplemental front-
impact air bags are most effective when you
are sitting well back and upright in the seat.
The front-impact air bags inflate with great
force. If you and your passengers are unrest-
rained, leaning forward, sitting sideways, or
out of position in any way, you and your
passengers are at greater risk of injury or
death in an accident. You and your passen-
gers may also receiv e serious or fatal
injuries from the supplemental front-impact
air bag if you are up against it when it
inflates. Always sit back against the seat-
back and as far away as practical from the
steering wheel or instrument panel. Always
use the seat belts.

1-30 Safety — seats, seat belts and supplemental restraint system
WARNING:
. The supplemental side-impact air bags and
supplemental curtain side-impact air bags
ordinarily will not inflate in the event of a
front impact, rear impact, rollover, or lower
severity side collision. Always wear the seat
belts to help reduce the risk or severity of
injury in accidents.
. The seat belts and the supplemental side-
impact air bags and supplemental curtain
side-impact air bags are most effective when
you are sitting well back and upright in the
seat. The supplemental side-impact air bags
and supplemental curta in side-impact air
bags inflate with great force. If you and your
passengers are unrestrained, leaning for-
ward, sitting sideways, or out of position in
any way, you and your passengers are at
greater risk of injury or death in an accident.
. Do not allow anyone to place their hands,
legs, or face near the supplemental side-
impact air bags and supplemental curtain
side-impact air bags on the sides of the
seatback of the front seats or near the side
roof rails. Do not allow anyone sitting in the
front seats or rear outboard seats to extend
their hands out of the windows or lean
against the doors. Some examples of dan-
gerous riding positions are shown in the
illustrations.
. When sitting in the rear seats, do not hold
onto the seatback of the front seats. If the
supplemental side-impact air bags and sup-
plemental curtain side-impact air bags in-
flat e, you may be seriously injured. Be
especially careful with children, who should
always be properly restrained.
. Do not use seat covers on the front seat-
backs. They may interfere with the supple-
mental side-impact air bag inflations.
Pre-tensioner seat belt system
T32A130827-4BCD70AF-5EB8-439E-9317-35CFA875C11C
The pre-tensioner seat belt system activates in
conjunction with the supplemental front-impact air
bag. Working with the seat belt retractor and anchor, it
helps tighten the seat belt the instant the vehicle
becomes involved in certain types of collisions, helping
to restrain front seat occupants. (See “Pre-tensioner
seat belt system ” (P.1-36).)
