Driving -> Starting / Stopping the Engine for Your Renault Megane SUV First Generation (1995-2002)

STARTING/STOPPING THE ENGINE  
Starting the engine  
In the case of an automatic gearbox  
Diesel injection  
Refer to the information on  
automatic gearboxes in section 2.  
Cold or warm engine  
Hot engine  
Turn the ignition key to the on  
position M and hold it in this  
position until the engine preheating  
warning light goes out.  
Turn the key immediately to the  
“Starter” position. In the event that  
the engine does not start at the first  
attempt, repeat the operation using  
the preheating.  
Special

Turn the key to the starter position D  
without accelerating.  
In  
very  
cold  
conditions  
Let the engine run in neutral  
without overrevving for several  
seconds.  
(temperatures below –20°C): so that  
it is easier to start the engine, switch  
on the ignition for several seconds  
before starting the engine.  
Release the key as soon as the  
engine starts.  
Make sure the engine immobiliser is  
not activated (see section 1 on the  
engine immobiliser).  
Stopping the engine  
With the engine idling, turn the key  
back to the “Stop” position.  
Petrol injection  
Engine hot or cold  
Turn the key to the “start” position  
without accelerating.  
Release the key as soon as the  
engine starts.  
If there is a child (or animal) in the vehicle, never leave it unattended with the key in the ignition.  
With the key in the ignition he or she could start up the engine or operate electrical equipment such as the  
electric windows and there is a risk that the child may be injured (by trapping his or her neck, arm, hand, etc.).  
Risk of serious injury.  
Never switch off the ignition before the vehicle has stopped completely. Once the engine has stopped, the power  
steering, brake servo and the passive safety devices such as airbags and pretensioners will no longer operate.  
When the key has been removed the steering will lock.
