Notes on temporary spare wheel 3

z If the temporary spare wheel is used, the

handling of the vehicle may change,

particularly if winter tyres 3 are being

used .

Notes on directional tyres 3

Changing wheels

Directional tyres only achieve their full

performance potential when mounted in

the prescribed direction of rotation. If,after

a flat tyre, the tyre or spare wheel is

mounted against the prescribed direction

of rotation, observe the following:

There may be a tyre repair kit instead of a

spare wheel – see page 182.

To ensure your safety, make the following

preparations and observe the following

information when changing wheels:

z The Electronic Stability Program

z Park the vehicle on a level, firm and non-

skid surface.

z Driving conditions may be altered.

Replace the defective tyre as soon as

possible, balance the wheeland mount it

z Switch on the hazard warning lights,

apply the handbrake, engage first gear

or reverse gear (Easytronic 3 in

z Fit only one temporary spare wheel.

z Correctly set up the warning triangle.

z Before raising the vehicle, set the front

wheels to the straight-ahead position.

z Replace temporary spare wheel with full

specification wheel without delay.

z Never change more than one wheel

at a time.

z Ty re chains 3 are not permitted on the

temporary spare wheel. If tyre chains

have to be used after a front wheel

puncture, fit temporary spare wheel to

the rear axle and fit a rear wheel to the

front axle. Check tyre pressure and

correct if necessary, see page 216.

z Note the information on the temporary

spare wheel on pages 162, 216.

z Block the wheel diagonally opposite the

wheel to be changed, by placing wedge

blocks or equivalent in front and behind

the whee l.

z Use the jack 3 only to change wheels.

z If the ground on which the vehicle is

standing is soft, asolidboard (max.1 cm

thick) should be placedunder the jack 3.

Using a thicker board could damage the

jack and the vehicle.

z No people or animals may be in the

vehicle when it is jacked up.

z Never crawl under a jacked-up vehicle.

Prise off the hub cap by inserting a

screwdriver 3 in the recess at the side of

the hub cap. Protect the rim by placing a

soft cloth between the screwdriver and

the alloy wheel.

changing wheels, lightly grease the cone

of each bolt. For this reason, carry some

conventional grease.

If the wheel trim has visible wheel

bolts 3, the trim can remain on the

wheel. The retaining washers 3 on the

wheel bolts must not be removed.

With VXR 3 and VXR Line 3, the jack 3

must not be used, since the vehicle may

be damaged. Consult a workshop.

5. Unscrew wheelbolts and wipe clean with

a cloth. Then apply a light coating of

grease to the wheel bolts. Do notgrease

the thread of the bolts. Do not put the

wheel bolts down in a location where

they may become soiled.

8. Lower vehicle.

9. Tighten wheel bolts crosswise,putting on

wheel bolt wrench 3 as far as possible.
