General information

Depending on the modelvariant, the spare

wheel may be in the form of a temporary

spare wheel 3. Refer to the notes on this

page and pages 162, 216.

On vehicles with alloy wheels 3, the spare

wheel may have a steel rim.

If y ou use winter tyres 3, the spare wheel

maystillbe fittedwith asummertyre. If you

use the spare wheel, the vehicle’s handling

may be altered. Obtain a replacement for

the faulty tyre as soon as possible, and

have the wheel balanced and fitted to the

vehicle.

The spare wheel may have a smaller tyre

and a smaller rim than the wheels mounted

on the vehicle¹⁾: Using the spare wheel may

alter the driving behaviour of the vehicle.

Have the defective tyre replaced as soon

as possible, balance the wheel and have it

mounted on the vehicle.

Stowing standard size tyres in the spare

wheel well

The spare wheel well is not designed for all

sizes of commercia lly availab le ty res. If a

larger wheel must be stowed in the spare

wheelwellafter changing wheels, place the

floor cover on the overlaying wheel.

Country-specific version:

In some countries, the spare wheel may only

be used as a temporary spare wheel.

Changing wheels

Directional tyres only achieve their full

performance potential when mounted in

the prescribed direction of rotation. If,after

a flat tyre, the tyre or spare wheel is

mounted against the prescribed direction

of rotation, observe the following:

spare wheel – see page 182.

To ensure your safety, make the following

preparations and observe the following

information when changing wheels:

z The Electronic Stability Program

ESP®^{Pl us}3 may sw itc h its e lf off.

z Park the vehicle on a level, firm and non-

skid surface.

z Driving conditions may be altered.

z Switch on the hazard warning lights,

apply the handbrake, engage first gear

or reverse gear (Easytronic 3 in

z Fit only one temporary spare wheel.

z Do not drive faster than 50 mph

z Correctly set up the warning triangle.

z Before raising the vehicle, set the front

wheels to the straight-ahead position.

z Replace temporary spare wheel with full

specification wheel without delay.

z Never change more than one wheel

at a time.

z Ty re chains 3 are not permitted on the

temporary spare wheel. If tyre chains

have to be used after a front wheel

puncture, fit temporary spare wheel to

the rear axle and fit a rear wheel to the

front axle. Check tyre pressure and

correct if necessary, see page 216.
