Dual clutch gearbox DSG®: Selecting a position
Fig. 1 Selector lever for the dual clutch gearbox(DSG) with
button for parking lock.
The selected position is shown on the instrument cluster display and on the lower part of the centre console
→ Fig. 1when the ignition is switched on.
The gear shift pattern is shown on the instrument cluster display when the brake is applied or when a position is
engaged.
– Parking lock
The drive wheels are blocked. May only be selected when the vehicle isstationary.

To engage the parking lock, press theP button → Fig. 1
.
If the engine is switched off in positionD/S or R, the gearbox automatically engages the parking lockP to prevent the
vehicle from rolling away.
If the engine is switched off in positionN, the gearbox remains in neutral positionN for around 30 minutes and only
then engages the parking lock P (car wash function)(→ Switching off the engine).
– Reverse gear
Reverse gear is selected. May only be selected when the vehicle isstationary.
– Neutral
The gearbox is in the neutral position. No force is transmitted to the wheels and the braking effect of the engine is
not available.
– Standard forward driving position
Position : normal programme.
All forward gears are shifted up and down automatically. The timing of the gear shift is determined by the engine
load, your individual driving style and the speed of the vehicle.
Position : sport programme.
The forward gears are automatically changed uplater and down earlier than in selector lever positionD. This exploits
the engine’s full power reserves. The timing of the gear shift is determined by the engine load, your individual driving
style and the speed of the vehicle.

Move the selector lever→ Fig. 1
to the rear to switch between positionsD and S.
The selector lever will always move back to the centre position.
Changing position
Move the selector lever forward or back to the first pressure point to select the next position. The selector lever
returns to its starting position.
Move the selector lever beyond the pressure point to the desired position to skip a position. The selector lever returns
to its starting position. You might use this function to shift directly from position D to positionR. The neutral position
N is skipped.
WARNING
Selecting the wrong position can cause you to lose control of the vehicle, which can lead to accidents and serious
injuries.
Never depress the accelerator pedal when selecting a position.
When the engine is running, the vehicle starts moving as soon as a selector lever position is engaged and the
brake pedal is released.
Never select reverse gearR or engage the parking lockP while the vehicle is in motion.
WARNING
Unintentional vehicle movements can cause serious injury.
The driver must never leave the driver seat when the engine is running and a position has been selected. If you
have to leave the vehicle while the engine is running, always switch on the electronic parking brake and set the
parking lock to the P position.
If the engine is running and the selector lever is in positionD/S or R, the vehicle must be held on the foot brake.
The vehicle will creep forward even when the engine is idling, as power transmission is even then not fully
interrupted.
Never select reverse gearR or engage the parking lock P when the vehicle is in motion.
Never leave the vehicle in the neutral positionN. The vehicle can roll downhill, irrespective of whether or not the
engine is running.
NOTICE
If the electronic parking brake isnot switched on when the vehicle is stationary and the brake pedal is released
when the parking lock P is engaged, the vehicle may move a few centimetres forwards or backwards.
If the selector lever is moved accidentally toN when driving, take your foot off the accelerator. Wait for the
engine to reach idling speed in the neutral position before selecting a driving position again.
