Ignition Sw itch Key Lock Solenoid N376
The Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid
N376 is located within the Access/Start
Authorization Switch E415. It prevents the
ignition key from being removed when
the selector lever is in a driving position.
Previous versions of this ignition key
removal lock feature are mechanical
systems activated by cable control.

The ignition key removal lock in
the Phaeton operates on an
electromechanical basis.
How it w orks
Without Current
The ignition key removal lock contains two
spring-loaded locking pins that engage in
the extended grooves of the inserted
ignition key.

The locking pins engage in the ignition
key grooves if the selector lever is
not in P” position. The ignition key
cannot be withdrawn.

When the selector lever is in P” position,
a signal travels from Selector Lever Park
Position Lock Switch F319 to the Access/
Start Control Module J518. The Access/
Start Control Module J518 then sends
current to the Ignition Switch Key Lock
Solenoid N376. The locking pins are pulled
out by the solenoid and thus removed from
the ignition key grooves. The ignition key
can then be withdrawn.

If the vehicle is equipped with an
Access/Start Authorization Button

and audible warning upon leaving
the vehicle if the selector lever is
not in the “P” position.

If the ignition is turned off and the selector
lever is in P” position, a signal travels
from the Selector Lever Park Position Lock
Switch F319 to the Access/Start Control
Module J518. The Access/Start Control
Module J518 then sends current to the
Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid N376
and the locking pins are released. The
ignition key can then be withdrawn.

J 518
In vehicles with an Access/Start
Authorization Button E408, the Access/
Start Control Module J518 signals to the
Control Module with Indicator Unit in
Instrument Panel Insert J285 that the
selector lever is not in P” position. The
Control Module with Indicator Unit in
Instrument Panel Insert J285 then triggers
a visual and audible warning. The driver is
thus informed that the selector lever is not
in P” position.

Effects of failure
The electromechanical lock cannot be
released and the key cannot be withdrawn
if the signal from the selector lever to the
Access/Start Control Module J518 or the
signal from the Access/Start Control
Module J518 to the ignition lock fails.
In these circumstances, the ignition
lock has an emergency release for the
ignition key.
