Checking and topping up fluids

Never open the bonnet if you can see or hear  
steam or coolant escaping from the engine  
compartment; there is a risk of being scal-  
ded. The cooling system is under pressure.  
Wait until you can no longer see or hear es-  
caping steam or coolant.  
Brake fluid  
Checking the brake fluid  
When working in the engine compartment  
be aware that the radiator fan may start  
running suddenly, even if the ignition is  
switched off – risk of injury!  
The coolant and coolant additives can be a  
health hazard. Store the coolant additive in  
the original container in a safe place out of  
reach of children – risk of poisoning.  
CAUTION

Coolant loss which leads to the coolant ex-  
pansion tank being empty normally indicates  
significant leaks in the cooling system which  
could result in further damage. In this case,  
do NOT drive on. Seek professional assistance.  
Do not add coolant if the expansion tank is  
empty. Air could have got into the cooling  
system – risk of damage! In this case, do  
NOT drive on. Seek professional assistance.  
If there is a visible amount of coolant re-  
maining in the tank, add more coolant.

Drive to a qualified workshop without delay  
and have the fault rectified. If the warning/

stop the vehicle and switch off the ignition.  
Seek professional assistance.  
Checking the brake fluid level  
If too much coolant has been added to the  
coolant expansion tank, drive to a qualified  
workshop soon and have the coolant level  
corrected.  
The brake fluid reservoir is located underneath a  
cover in the engine compartment on the driver's  
side.  
If you use non-distilled water, the chemicals  
that it contains can cause serious corrosion  
damage to the engine – risk of engine dam-  
age!  
Park the vehicle on a level surface.  
Open the bonnet ðpage 236.  
Remove the cover below the windscreen on the  
driver’s side. To do so, lift the cover slightly at  
the front 1 and detach it 2 ðFig. 133.  
Read off the brake fluid level on the brake fluid  
reservoir ðpage 237. The brake fluid level  
must be between the MIN and MAX marks  
If you have used a large quantity of non-dis-  
tilled water (more than 0.5 ltr.) in an emer-  
gency, drive directly to a qualified workshop  
and have the coolant changed.  
Applies to vehicles with cooling of electrical  
components: The caps for the two coolant  
expansion tanks must not be swapped over  
– risk of engine damage! Black cap for com-

Fit the cover securely again below the wind-  
screen. To do so, press the cover down at the

front and rear longitudinal edges until all tabs  
engage.  
Driver messages about the brake system  
The following driver messages may appear, de-  
pending on the equipment installed in your vehi-  
cle:  
The brake fluid level is also automatically moni-  
tored.  
Having the brake fluid changed  
Brakes: stop vehicle and check brake fluid  
level  
The brake fluid is changed at regular intervals.  
Have the brake fluid changed by a qualified work-  
shop. The qualified workshop will inform you of  
these intervals.  
Stop the vehicle and check the brake fluid level.  
Seek professional assistance.  
WARNING  
WARNING  
If the brake fluid level is under the MIN mark,  
the effectiveness of the brakes and therefore  
the safety of the vehicle may be impaired –  
risk of accident! Do not drive on. Seek profes-  
sional assistance.  
Please refer to the safety information ð

Heavy use of the brakes may cause a vapour  
lock if old brake fluid is left in the system.  
This would seriously impair the effective-  
ness of the brakes and the safety of the car –  
risk of accident!  
CAUTION  
If the brake fluid level is above the MAX mark,  
brake fluid may escape via the cap on the res-  
ervoir in certain circumstances and cause  
damage to the vehicle.  
The brake fluid in your vehicle must comply  
with the VW 501 14 standard. If this brake  
fluid is not available, it is permissible to use  
an alternative high-quality brake fluid com-  
plying with the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle  
Standard (FMVSS) 116 DOT 4, Class 6  
(ISO 4925).  
Electrical system  
Driver messages about the electrical  
system  
If used brake fluid or brake fluid not ap-  
proved for your vehicle is used, the effective-  
ness of the brakes will be seriously impaired  
and the brake system could even fail com-  
pletely – risk of accident! The vehicle manu-  
facturer will accept no liability for faults or  
damage which occur as a result. In addition,  
no warranty claims will be accepted.  
The following driver messages may appear, de-  
pending on the equipment installed in your vehi-  
cle:  
If the warning lamp  
/
lights up, there is a  
power supply or battery fault or a fault in the ve-  
hicle's electrical system.  
Electrical system: fault. Safely stop vehicle  
CAUTION  
The steering wheel may also vibrate when the  
driver message appears. Stop the vehicle safely  
and do not continue driving. You should also  
switch off the vehicle ð . Seek professional as-  
sistance.

Brake fluid must not be allowed to come in-  
to contact with the vehicle's body, other-  
wise it will attack the paintwork.  
Electrical system: fault. No restart possible.
