Checking and topping up fluids

Applies to vehicles with diesel engine: If the indi-

cator lamp requesting you to refuel the vehicle

 also appears in the instrument cluster during

the regeneration trip, the particulate filter regen-

eration process may be interrupted. Drive to a

filling station and then resume the regeneration

trip after refuelling the vehicle.

compartment

Extra caution is necessary when working on

components in the engine compartment.

Always be aware of the danger of injury and

scalding as well as the risk of accident or fire

when working in the engine compartment (e.g.

when checking and refilling fluids). Always ob-

serve the warnings listed below and follow all

normal safety precautions. The engine compart-

ment of any motor vehicle is a potentially haz-

ardous area. ð

To maximise the service life of the particulate fil-

ter, always use suitable engine oil and the correct

fuel. You should also avoid driving the vehicle

continuously on short trips.

WARNING

When regenerating the particulate filter, it is

essential that you adjust your speed to suit

the weather, road, terrain and traffic condi-

tions – risk of accident! The recommendation

must never lead to the driver disregarding lo-

cal traffic regulations.

CAUTION

Hot components!



Before starting the regeneration trip, check

which method (driving at a constant speed or

driving and coasting) is required for your vehi-

cle (based on the engine). If you do not use

the correct method, the regeneration trip may

have no effect and the particulate filter may

be damaged.

Rotating parts!

Hot surfaces. The heat generated during

operation can lead to hot surfaces on in-

dividual components. Do not touch com-

ponents – risk of burns!





Fan can switch on at any time!

High voltage! The voltage of these com-

ponents (such as the high-voltage sys-

tem or ignition system) is lethal! Touch-

ing damaged live high-voltage compo-

nents could cause you to be fatally elec-

trocuted.



If the indicator lamp

lights up or flashes, mal-

functions have occurred which are relevant for

emissions. These malfunctions may reduce the

quality of the exhaust gas and damage the cata-

lytic converter, for example. Drive slowly to a

qualified workshop without delay and have the

fault rectified.

High voltage! Switch off the engine be-

fore touching any part of ignition sys-

tem!



workshop.

WARNING

A vehicle’s engine compartment is a potential-

ly hazardous area and working there can lead

to serious injuries.

– Do not expose yourself to chemical substan-

ces for any longer than necessary. For exam-

ple, electrolytic fluids can irritate the skin.

– Always exercise extreme caution when work-

ing in the engine compartment. Always keep

to the generally accepted safety procedures

and use your common sense. Never put

yourself at risk of injury.

WARNING

The voltage of the high-voltage system is le-

thal! Touching damaged high-voltage compo-

nents could cause you to be fatally electrocu-

ted. A warning sticker is attached to the dif-

ferent parts of the high-voltage system. This

is intended to warn you of the high voltage.

– Do not perform any work in the engine com-

partment if you do not fully understand the

procedure or if you do not have suitable in-

formation, tools and equipment.

– If you are not sure how to proceed, have the

work performed by a qualified workshop.

Work which is not performed properly can

cause serious injuries.

CAUTION

When topping up fluids make sure the correct

fluid is put into the correct filler opening.

Failure to do so will cause serious malfunc-

tions or damage.

WARNING

Note the following information when working

in the engine compartment:

For the sake of the environment

Inspect the ground underneath your vehicle

regularly so that any leaks are detected at an

early stage. If you find spots of oil or other

fluids, have your vehicle inspected by a quali-

fied workshop.

– Switch the vehicle off.

– Apply the parking brake.

– Keep children away from the engine com-

partment.

– Never spill fluids in the engine compart-

ment.

– Take care not to cause short circuits in the

electrical system. Close the positive battery

terminal cover, for example, immediately af-

ter use.

– To avoid the risk of being scalded, never

open the bonnet if you see steam or coolant

escaping from the engine compartment.

Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen

before opening the bonnet.

– The cap on the coolant expansion tank must

not be opened if the coolant is hot. The cool-

ing system is under pressure.

– Protect your face, hands and arms by cover-

ing the cap with a large, thick cloth to pro-

tect against escaping coolant and steam.

– Any work on the batteries and electrical sys-

tem in your vehicle entails a risk of injury

and chemical burns in addition to danger of

accident or fire. For this reason, you must

Lift the bonnet slightly ð

Press the release lever ðFig. 125 in the direc-

tion indicated by the arrow. This will release the

arrester hooks.

Open the bonnet.

To close the bonnet, pull it down to overcome

the spring pressure.

Then let it drop into the catches; do not press

down. ð

WARNING

– To avoid the risk of being scalded, never

open the bonnet if you see steam or coolant

escaping from the engine compartment.

Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen

before opening the bonnet.

– For safety reasons the bonnet must always

be completely closed when the vehicle is

moving. After closing it always check that it

is properly secured. It should not be possible

to lift the front edges of the bonnet.

– Should you notice that the bonnet is not

safely secured when the vehicle is moving,

stop the vehicle immediately and close the

bonnet properly, otherwise it could cause an

accident.

The wiper arms should be resting on the wind-

screen: make sure they are not in a raised posi-

tion. Otherwise the paint may get damaged.
