not have a tow-bar. It is advisable to use a tow-
rope made of elastic synthetic fibre or similarly
elastic material.
Note
Connect the jump leads so they have good
metal-to-metal contact with the battery ter-
minals.
WARNING
There is a high risk of accidents when tow-
ing, as the towed vehicle can easily be driven
into the towing vehicle.
Towing away
General information
There must not be anyone in the vehicle if it
vehicle is taken away by a breakdown truck
or a special car transporter – risk of acci-
dent!
You should not attempt the following steps un-
less you are in possession of the necessary equip-
ment and have the skills required.
Never secure the tow-bar or tow-rope to any
part of the vehicle’s axles or suspension as
these could be damaged and lead to acci-
dents and severe injuries.
Towing requires some experience. Audi recom-
mends contacting a towing service to have the
vehicle taken away.
You should only have your broken-down vehicle
towed away by another vehicle in exceptional cir-
cumstances. Inexperienced drivers should not at-
tempt to tow another vehicle.
CAUTION
If it is not possible to tow the vehicle as de-
scribed above (e.g. due to a gearbox failure
or if the vehicle has to be towed further
than 50 km), it must be transported on a
special car transporter or trailer.
Information on towing vehicles
When the engine is not running, the gearbox will
not be adequately lubricated if the following
speed/distance restrictions are not observed:
Towing a vehicle with the wrong axle raised
can cause serious damage to the gearbox.
For technical reasons, the vehicle must not
be tow-started.
The vehicle must not be towed faster than
50 km/h.
The vehicle must not be towed further than
Note
50 km.
It is not possible to move the selector lever
out of transmission position P if the electri-
cal power supply fails. Before the vehicle
can be recovered/manoeuvred you must
manually release the parking lock
Additional note on towing by breakdown
truck
The vehicle may only be towed with the front axle
raised. Do not wrap any kind of chain or rope
around the brake lines.
ðpage 116.
Switch Audi pre sense* off ðpage 211 if the
vehicle is being loaded onto a car transport-
er, train or ferry, etc. or being towed away.
This prevents the pre sense* system from
taking action in an inappropriate situation.
Please observe the relevant local regula-
tions when towing away.
Tow-bar / tow-rope
The vehicle can be towed with a tow-bar or tow-
rope. Both drivers should be familiar with the
technique required for towing, particularly if a
tow-rope is used.
Do not pull too hard with the towing vehicle and
take care to avoid jerking the tow-rope. When
towing off-road, there is always a risk that the
anchorage points may be overloaded.
Towing away
Please observe the important safety warnings on
ðpage 362.
It is easier and safer to tow the vehicle with a
tow-bar. You should only use a tow-rope if you do

Preparations
Front towline anchorage
Attach the tow-rope or the tow-bar only to the
towing anchorages provided for this purpose
ðpage 363, ðpage 364.
Please ensure that the tow-rope is not twisted
as it could otherwise unscrew the towline an-
chorage while the vehicle is being towed.
The hazard warning lights of both vehicles
must normally be switched on ðpage 62. How-
ever, observe any regulations to the contrary.

Put the towline anchorage back in the vehicle
toolkit after use.
Release the parking brake ðpage 125.
Select transmission position N.
Ensure that the tow-rope remains taut at all
times when towing.
WARNING

far as the stop, there is a risk of the screw
connection shearing off during towing – risk
of accident!
WARNING
Note
If the vehicle has no electrical power, do
NOT use a tow-bar or tow-rope to tow the
vehicle.
On some models, the shape of the cap can
