the same speeds as conventional 2WD ve-

are designed to perform satisfactorily under
off-road conditions. Failure to operate this
vehicle correctly could result in loss of control
and/or a rollover accident.

 TIRES OF FOUR-WHEEL
DRIVE (4WD)
A
WARNING:
Whenever you drive off-road through san'
mud or water as deep as the wheel hub, mo
frequent maintenance may be required. F
details, refer to "Maintenance for off-roa
driving" in a separate maintenance
Your vehicle is designed for both normal and
off-road use. It has a higher ground clearance
and a narrower track to make it suitable for
off-road use. These characteristics give the ve-
hicle a higher center of gravity than ordinary
passenger cars. An advantage of the higher
ground clearance is a better view of your sur-
roundings allowing you to anticipate problems.
Observe the following precautions:
CAUTION:
Do not use the cruise control when driving
under the following conditions:
Always use tires of the same size, brand,
construction (bias, bias-belted or radial),
and tread pattern on all four wheels. Fail-
ure to do so may result in a circumference
difference between tires on the front and
rear axles which will cause excessive tire
wear and may damage the transmission,
when it is not possible to keep the
vehicle at set speed.
Tire rotation
Avoid raising the center of gravity by loading
things on the roof or equipping the vehicle
with tires larger than specified in this manual.
NISSAN recommends that tires be rotated every
5,000 km (3,000 miles). Do not include the
temporary spare tire in the tire rotation.
Rinse the underside of the vehicle with
water after driving through mud or sand.
Remove any brush or sticks that are trapped.
in heavytraffic or in traffic that varies in
speed.
Do not grip the inside or spokes of the
steering wheel when driving off-road. The
steering wheel could jerk and injure your
hands. Instead drive with your fingers and
thumbs on the outside of the rim.
on winding or hilly roads.
on slippery roads (rain, snow, ice, etc.)
in very windy areas.
Tire chain
Install the same size of winter tires on all fou'
(4) wheels (such as studless tires) or inst11
tire chains to the rear wheels when driving on,
slippery roads (e.g., after a snow) and drivel
transfer case and differential gears.
Tire chains must be installed only on the
rear wheels and not on the front wheels.
Drive carefully when off the road and avoid
dangerous areas.
If excessive tire wear is found, it is recommended
that all four tires be replaced with tires of the
same size, brand, construction and tread pat
tern. The tire pressure and wheel alignment
should also be checked and corrected as nec-
essary. Contact a NISSAN dealer.
Snow tires
Do not drive with tire chains on paved roads
which are clear of snow. Driving with chains in
such conditions can cause damage to the vari-
ous mechanisms of the vehicle due to over-
stress. When driving on clear paved roads, be
sure to change to 2WD.
Doing so could cause a loss of vehicle
control and result in an accident.
!
Do not drive across steep slopes. In-
stead drive either straight up or straight
down the slopes. Off-road vehicles can
tip oversideways much more easily than
they can foꢀard or backward.
carefully using 4WD.
-
Before operating the vehicle, ensure that the
driverand all passengers have their seat belts
fastened.
CAUTION:
On the manual transmission model, do not
shift into N (Neutral) position without de-
pressing the clutch pedal when the cruise
control is on. This could cause engine dam-
age. If you shift into neutral without de-
pressing the pedal, depress the clutch
pedal and turn the main switch off imme-
diately.
Always drive with the floor mats in place as
the floor may become very hot. Particular care
should be taken if you are barefoot.
Do not drive beyond the performance of
the tires even with 4WD. Sudden accel-
eration, steering or braking may cause
loss of control or the vehicle to stick in
the road.
If you install snow tires, they must also be the
same size, brand, construction and tread pattern
on all four wheels.
Lower your speed when encountering strong
crosswinds. With its higher center of gravity,
your NISSAN is more affected by gusty side
winds. Slower speeds ensure better vehicle
control.
CAUTION:
ONLY use spare tires specified for each
4WD model.
If at all possible, avoid sharp turning maneu-
vers, particularly at high speeds. Your 4WD
vehicle has a higher center of gravity than a
2WD vehicle and can tip over more easily.
The vehicle is not designed for cornering at

The vehicle may not maintain the set speed
when going up or down steep hills. If this
happens, drive without the cruise control.

WARNING:
b) Push and hold the ACCEURES set switch.
When the vehicle attains the speed you
desire, release the switch.
Safe parking procedures require that
both the parking brake be set and the
transmission placed into the P (Park) for
automatictransmission models or in an
appropriate gear for manual transmis-
sion models. Failure to do so could
cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly
or roll away and result in an accident.
The transfer shift lever must be
in the 2H, 4H or 4L position and the
parking brake must be applied to pre-
vent the vehicle from rolling.
When the SET indicator light blinks, turn the
cruise control main switch OFF and have the
system checked by a NISSAN dealer.
To cancel the preset speedꢂ follow any of
these three methods:
c) Push, then quickly release the ACCEU
RES set switch. Each time you do this, the
set speed will increase by about 1 .6 km/h (1
MPH).
a) Push the CANCEL switch; The SET indicator
light will go out.
The SET indicator light may blink when the
cruise control main switch is turned on while
pushing the ACCEURES, COAST/SET, or
CANCEL switch. To properly set the cruise
control system, perform the preceding steps
in the order indicated.

c) Turn the main switch off. Both the CRUISE
and SET indicator lights will go out.
CRUISE CONTROL OPERATIONS
a) Lightly tap the brake pedal. When the vehicle
attains the desired speed, push the
COAST/SET switch and release it.
The cruise control allows driving at speeds
above 48 km/h (30 MPH) without your foot on
the accelerator pedal.
If you depress the brake pedal while pushing
the ACCEURES or COAST/SET switch and
reset at the cruising speed, the cruise control
will disengage. Turn the main switch off once
and then turn it on again.
Never leave the engine running while
vehicle is unattended.
b) Push and hold the COAST/SET switch. Re-
lease the switch when the vehicle slows
down to the desired speed.
If the automatic transmission park
warning light "ATP" is ONꢂ this indi-
cates that the automatic transmission P
(Park) position will not function and the
transfer shift lever is in the N position.
Failure to engage the transfershift lever
in 2H, 4H or4L could result in the vehicle
moving unexpectedlyꢂ resulting in seri-
ous personal injuꢄ or property damage.
To turn on the cruise controlꢂ push the main
switch on. The cruise control on indicator light
CRUISE will come on.
Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.
The cruise control will automatically be can-
celled if the vehicle slows down below ap-
proximately 1 3 km/h (8 MPH).
c) Push, then quickly release the COAST/
SET switch. Each time you do this, the set
speed will decrease by about 1 .6 km/h (1
MPH).
To set at the cruising speedꢂ accelerate your
vehicle to the desired speed, push the
COAST/SET switch and release it. (The cruise
set indicator light SETwill come on.) Take your
foot off the accelerator pedal. Your vehicle will
maintain the set speed.

tion. When parking on an uphill grade, place
the gearshift lever in the 1st position.
To resume the preset speedꢂ push and re-
lease the ACCEURES set switch. The vehicle
will resume the last set cruising speed when the
vehicle speed is over 48 km/h (30 MPH).
