8.1  
General description - anti-theft alarm  
system

The functions of the anti-theft alarm are integrated into the on‐  
board supply control unit -J519-.  
After renewal of the onboard supply control unit -J519-, the  
anti-theft alarm must be adapted ⇒ page 248 .  
The anti-theft alarm detects any unauthorised manipulation of  
the safety circuit and, if necessary, triggers an acoustic alarm  
via the intelligent siren (alarm horn). If disconnection of the vehi‐  
cle battery from the onboard power supply system did not cause  
the alarm, an optical alarm via the flasher switch is triggered.  
The safety circuit of the anti-theft alarm system includes the  
following components:  
♦ Rotary latches of the driver door and front passenger door;  
in dual-cab vehicles, also the rotary latches of rear doors.  
♦ States of the door locks  
♦ Bonnet contact  
♦ Coupled trailer  
♦ Alarm horn  
♦ Terminal 15, immobiliser  
♦ Onboard supply control unit

Note  
If the battery in the engine compartment is disconnected  
whilst the vehicle is locked, or the electric cables are sev‐  
ered, the anti-theft alarm system actuates an acoustic alarm  
signal.  
For additional information refer to the ⇒ operating manual of  
the vehicle.  
For fault finding, use the systems described in chapter “Ve‐  
hicle diagnosis, testing and information system” in “Guided  
Fault Finding” mode ⇒ page 269 .  
The tailboard is not monitored.  
Activating the anti-theft alarm system  
The following requirements must be met in order to activate the  
anti-theft alarm system.  
♦ “ATA function active” has been set  
♦ Terminal 15 and terminal S have been switched off  
♦ Driver door closed  
Activation of the anti-theft alarm system is initiated by means of  
a locking command to the central locking system.  
The intelligent siren (alarm horn) receives an activation com‐  
mand and, at the same time, the status of the passive compo‐  
nents such as terminal 15, rotary latches, door locks, bonnet  
contact and trailer is checked by the anti-theft alarm system.  
When the activation phase ends, the anti-theft alarm system  
has been armed, i.e. the intelligent siren (alarm horn) as well as  
the passive components relevant to safety are integrated into  
the safety circuit and are monitored.  
The following general conditions apply:  
♦ An open door is not integrated into the safety circuit until it is  
closed.  
♦ An open bonnet is not integrated into the safety circuit until it  
has been closed for at least 5 seconds.  
♦ An attached trailer, the intelligent siren (alarm horn) and the  
onboard supply control unit are monitored immediately after  
the end of the activation phase.  
Triggering of the anti-theft alarm system is suppressed for a  
lead time of 30 seconds.  
Deactivating the anti-theft alarm system  
The anti-theft alarm system can be deactivated in the following  
ways:  
♦ Opening command for the central locking system by means  
of remote control with an authorised key.  
♦ Switch-on of terminal 15 with an authorised key.  
♦ Opening command for central locking system via lock cylin‐  
der of driver door (this function can be coded).  
If an authorised key is not used or detected, the time that pass‐  
es after activation of the anti-theft alarm system decides on the  
activation status of the anti-theft alarm system.  
The anti-theft alarm system must trigger an alarm 30 seconds  
after the end of the lead time if terminal 15 was switched on

with an unauthorised key during the lead time and is still on  
after the lead time.  
If terminal 15 is switched on more than 30 seconds after activa‐  
tion of the anti-theft alarm system without an authorised key,  
the anti-theft alarm system remains armed and an alarm is trig‐  
gered.  
The possibility of deactivating the anti-theft alarm system via  
the lock cylinder of the driver door must have been coded.  
The behaviour of the anti-theft alarm system is then as follows,  
depending on the coding “ATA alarm delay if vehicle unlocked  
via lock key active”:  
♦ If an alarm delay has not been coded, the anti-theft alarm  
system triggers an alarm unless terminal 15 is switched on  
with an authorised key within 15 seconds after the driver  
door has been unlocked.  
♦ If an alarm delay has been coded, the anti-theft alarm sys‐  
tem does not trigger an alarm unless terminal 15 is switched  
on with an authorised key within 15 seconds after the driver  
door has been opened.  
Triggering and emission of alarms  
If the anti-theft alarm system has been armed, manipulation of  
components in the safety circuit leads to immediate triggering of  
an alarm and thus to emission of an alarm. The alarm is emitted  
optically via the flashing direction light and acoustically via the  
alarm horn.  
Intelligent siren (alarm horn)  
The intelligent siren (alarm horn) is used for emission of the  
acoustic anti-theft alarm.  
The following conditions lead to triggering of the acoustic intelli‐  
gent siren (alarm horn):  
♦ A corresponding command comes from the onboard power  
supply control unit.  
♦ If the vehicle battery is separated from the intelligent siren  
(alarm horn) or from the onboard power supply system  
♦ If the ATA LIN bus between the onboard power supply con‐  
trol unit and the intelligent siren (alarm horn) is interrupted.  
The vehicle battery supplies the power for the intelligent siren  
(alarm horn). If the connection is interrupted, the intelligent siren  
(alarm horn) is supplied with voltage via an internal rechargea‐  
ble NiMH battery.  
The following functions can be activated in the intelligent siren  
(alarm horn):  
♦ Arm  
♦ Disarm  
♦ Alarm emission  
♦ Confirmation tone  
♦ Adaptation (setting by means of coding after access-protec‐  
ted login)  
Fault detection and fault display:  
The anti-theft alarm system is equipped with self-diagnosis,  
which makes fault finding easier.  
For fault finding, use the systems described in chapter “Vehi‐  
cle diagnosis, testing and information system” in “Guided Fault  
Finding” mode ⇒ page 269 .

Removing and installing interior moni‐  
toring deactivation switch  
Note  
The interior monitoring deactivation switch -E267- is installed in  
the B-pillar trim on the driver side.  
Caution  
When removing and installing components that are in view  
(switches, covers, trim and so on), mask off areas in which  
tools (removal wedge -3409-, screwdriver) are used to lever  
out those components using commercially available masking  
tape.  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ Removal wedge -VAS 3409-  
Removing:  
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers, and withdraw  
ignition key.  
– Carefully prise out the interior monitoring deactivation switch  
-E267- and the deactivation button for vehicle inclination  
sender -E360- using the wedge -3409- or a suitable screw‐  
driver.  
– Release and disconnect connector -arrow-.

Note  
The alarm horn can be tested by means of the final control  
diagnosis of the onboard supply control unit ⇒ page 263 .  
The intelligent siren (alarm horn) -arrow- is below the ple‐  
num chamber on the right-hand side in the engine compart‐  
ment.  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ Hand drill  
Removing:  
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers, and withdraw  
ignition key.  
– In order to deactivate the anti-theft alarm system, unlock the  
doors with the remote control key.  
– Remove the air filter housing on the engine side and place to  
one side together with the connected wires.

– Remove coolant reservoir and place to one side together  
with the connected hoses.  
– Use drill and a drill bit to drill out the heads of the two pop  
rivets -arrows-.  
– Using a small screwdriver, release connector through open‐  
ing in housing.  
– Remove rivet residues.  
Installing:  
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
Note  
Remove all metal filings and the residue of the pop rivets from  
the vehicle.  
– Perform corrosion protection measures ⇒ General Informa‐  
tion; Body Repairs, General Body Repairs; Corrosion protec‐  
tion; Corrosion protection for attached and welded parts.  
– Fit connector to alarm horn -H12-, and engage it firmly.  
Note  
During installation, use appropriate rivets (see Electronic parts  
catalogue).  
– Check and, if necessary, adapt the coding of the anti-theft  
alarm system ⇒ page 248 .

– Disconnect electrical connector -3-.

Note  
The anti-theft alarm sensor -G578- includes the vehicle incli‐  
nation sender -G384- -1- and the interior monitoring sensor  
-G273- -2- (2 sensors). The anti-theft alarm sensor -G578- can‐  
not be dismantled.  
Caution  
When removing and installing components that are in view

clination sender -G384- -1- from interior light, while taking  
into account the lengths of connected wires.  
– Unclip lines from retainers -1-.  
– Unlock catches -arrows- and pull both interior monitoring  
sensors -2- out of interior light.  
Installing:  
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence of removal.
