Brake fluid

● Use only distilled water! All other

water types contain chemicals that could

cause considerable corrosion damage to the

engine. This could lead to engine failure. If

non-distilled water has been added, have the

entire engine cooling system fluid changed

immediately by a specialised workshop.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over

time. Excessive water content in the brake fluid

causes damage to the brake system. The

boiling point of the brake fluid is significantly

reduced by the effect of water. If the water

content in the brake fluid is too high, vapour

bubbles may form in the brake system if the

brakes are subjected to high stresses or during

heavy braking. The bubbles reduce the braking

power, increase the braking distance

● When adding engine coolant, do not re-base

the upper edge of the marked area.

the excess liquid will be expelled from the

engine cooling system and may cause

damage.

● If the system is leaking significant amounts

of coolant, only replenish coolant after the

engine has cooled down completely. If the

loss of coolant is significant, there may be

brake fluid in accordance with VW 501 14.

Before using a brake fluid, it should be checked

whether the specifications of the brake fluid, as

stated on the container, meet the requirements of

the vehicle.

Brake fluid complying with VW standard 501

14 is available from Volkswagen dealers.

WARNING

If the brakes fail or their braking power is

reduced, the brake fluid level may be too low

or the fluid itself may be too old or inadequate.

If such a brake fluid is not available and a

different high-quality brake fluid must be used, a

brake fluid that meets the requirements of DIN

ISO 4925 CLASS 4 or the US standard FMVSS 116

DOT 4 can be used.

● Have the brake system and brake fluid level

checked regularly!

● Have the brake fluid changed regularly.

Not all brake fluids that meet the requirements

of DIN ISO 4925 CLASS 4 or the US standard

FMVSS 116 DOT 4 have the same chemical

composition. Some of these brake fluids may

contain chemical substances which, over time,

can destroy or damage parts of the vehicle's

brake system.

● If the brake fluid is old and the brakes are

heavily used, vapour bubbles may form.

Bubbles reduce the braking power,

considerably increase the braking distance

and can lead to failure of the entire brake

system.

● Always use the correct brake fluid. Only

use brake fluid that expressly complies

with VW standard 501 14.

Volkswagen therefore recommends the use of

brake fluid that explicitly complies with VW

501 14 in order to ensure that the brake

system functions correctly in the long term.

● The use of any other or non-premium brake

fluid may impair the performance of the

brakes and reduce their stopping power.

Brake fluids in accordance with VW 501 14

comply with the requirements of the standard

DIN ISO 4925 CLASS 4 and the US standard

FMVSS 116 DOT 4.

● If a brake fluid in accordance with VW 501

14 is not available, a high-quality brake

fluid that meets the requirements of DIN ISO

4925 CLASS 4 or the US standard FMVSS

116 DOT 4 may be used as an exception.
