● When carrying out any kind of work,
always be extremely cautious and prudent
and observe the generally applicable safety
measures. Never put yourself at risk.
● When replenishing operating fluids, avoid
getting them on engine components or the
exhaust system. These fluids could cause
a fire.
● Never carry out work on the engine or
engine compartment unless you are familiar
with the necessary operations. If you are
not sure what needs to be done, have the
necessary work carried out by a specialist
workshop. Failure to carry out the work
properly may result in serious injury.
WARNING
The electrical system is under high voltage and
can cause electric shock, burns, serious injury
and death!
● Never short-circuit the electrical system.
The 12-volt battery could explode.
● Never open or close the engine cowling if
steam or engine coolant is escaping from
the engine compartment. Hot vapour or
coolant can cause severe burns. Always wait
until you no longer see or hear vapour or
coolant escaping from the engine
compartment.
● To reduce the risk of electric shock or
serious injury, observe the following while
the combustion engine is running or when
starting and, on hybrid vehicles, while the
propulsion system is engaged or when it
is switched on:
– Never touch the electrical wiring of the
ignition system.
– Never touch the electrical cables or
electrical connections of gas discharge
lamps.
– On hybrid vehicles, never touch high-
voltage components, the high-voltage
battery or the high-voltage on-board
power supply, especially the orange
high-voltage cables.
● Always wait until the engine has
cooled down before opening the
engine bonnet.
● Touching hot engine or exhaust system
components can cause skin burns.
● When the engine has cooled down, observe
the following before opening the engine
bonnet:
– Engage the electronic parking brake and
move the selector lever to the P
position.
WARNING
There are rotating parts in the engine
compartment which could cause serious injury.
– Switch off the ignition and remove the key
from the ignition lock.
– Always keep children away from the
engine compartment and never leave
them unattended.
● Never reach into the radiator fan or radiator
fan area. Touching the rotor blades can
cause serious injury. The fan is
● When the engine is hot, its cooling system is
under pressure. Never open the cap of the
engine coolant expansion tank when the
engine is hot. Doing so could cause coolant
to splash out and result in serious burns
and other injuries.
– Turn the expansion tank cap slowly and
carefully anticlockwise and at the same
time apply slight pressure to the cap.
temperature-dependent and may start
automatically, even when the ignition is
switched off and the key is out of the
ignition switch.
● If work is to be carried out during
engine start-up or while the engine is
running, be aware that rotating parts
may be damaged.
The high voltage ignition system (e.g. poly
V-belt, alternator or radiator fan) and the
high-voltage ignition system represent a
mortal danger. Always act with the utmost
caution.
– Always protect your face, hands and
arms from hot coolant or steam with a
large, thick cloth.
- Always make sure that no part of the
body, no jewellery or tie, no clothing if
loose-fitting, and no clothing that is too
