A mixture of specially treated water and at least

40 % of the coolant additive G 13 (TL-VW 774

J) is added to the engine cooling system and

the cooling circuit of the high-voltage system

ex-factory. This additive is recognisable by its

lilac colouring. This mixture of water and coolant

additive not only provides anti-freeze protection

down to -25 °C (-13 °F), but also protects the

light alloy parts of the engine cooling system

against corrosion. In addition, it prevents

limescale deposits and significantly increases

the boiling point of the coolant.

WARNING

Coolant is toxic!

● Store the coolant only in the original

container, tightly closed and in a safe

place.

● Never store coolant in empty food cans,

bottles or other similar containers, as it

could be ingested by someone else.

● Keep coolant out of the reach of children.

To protect the cooling system of the engine, the

additive percentage should always be at least 40

%, even when the weather or climate is warm

and no anti-freeze protection is necessary.

● Ensure that the percentage of coolant

additive is correct, taking into account the

lowest expected ambient temperature at the

location where the vehicle is to be used.

If increased antifreeze protection is required for

climatic reasons, the proportion of additive may

be increased. However, only up to a maximum

of 60 %, otherwise the anti-freeze protection

would be reduced and the cooling effect would

be impaired.

● If the outside temperature is extremely low,

the coolant may freeze and the vehicle

may be immobilised. As the heating would

not work in this case either, insufficiently

warm occupants could freeze to death.

When replenishing the coolant in the engine,

use a mixture of distilled water and at least 40

% of the coolant additive G 13 or G 12 plus-

sufficient anti-freeze protection, the hybrid

drive system could fail, resulting in serious

injury.

● Ensure that the percentage of coolant

additive is correct, taking into account the

lowest expected ambient temperature at the

location where the vehicle is to be used.

the coolant may freeze and the vehicle

NOTICE

Never mix the original additives for lithium-rich

liquids with the original additives.

The engine coolant must be used with engine

coolants that have not been approved by Volks-

wagen. Otherwise there is a risk of serious

damage to the engine and its cooling system.

● If the liquid in the expansion tanks is not

pink (resulting from mixing the lilac additive

with distilled water), but brown, for example,

then the additive G 13 has been mixed with

an unsuitable coolant, in which case the

coolant must be replaced immediately. In this

of it properly and in a respectful manner with

the environment.

When the engine coolant level is too low, the

coolant warning lamp comes on.

– Only add coolant if there is still some coolant

in the expansion tank, otherwise the mo- tor

or the cooling system of the high-voltage

system could be damaged! If you do not see

any coolant in the expansion tank, do not

continue driving and call in a qualified person

for assistance.

In addition to the functions and technology

described above, hybrid vehicles differ from

non-hybrid vehicles in other ways.

Previous steps

– If there is still some coolant in the expansion

tank, add coolant until the level stabilises.

– Park the vehicle on a firm horizontal surface.

Check coolant level

● Never open the engine bonnet if you see or

hear vapour or coolant escaping from the

engine compartment. Always wait until you

no longer see or hear vapour or coolant

escaping.

– When the engine is cold, check the coolant

level at the marks on the side of the

expansion tanks → fig. 248 and . The

coolant level must be within the markings.

– If the level is below the "MIN" mark on the

reservoir, add engine coolant. When the

engine is warm, the coolant level may slightly

exceed the MAX mark.

● Always wait until the engine has cooled

down completely before opening the engine

bonnet carefully. Touching hot parts can

cause burns to the skin.

Replenish coolant

● When the engine has cooled down, observe

the following before opening the engine

bonnet:

– Engage the electronic parking brake and

move the selector lever to the P

position.

– Always protect your face, hands and arms

from hot coolant or steam by placing a

suitable cloth over the expansion tank cap.

coolant splashing and cause serious burns

– Turn the cover slowly and carefully

● When replenishing operating fluids, make sure

that you use the correct fluids in the correct

filler ports. Using the wrong operating fluids

can lead to serious malfunctions and engine

damage

– Always protect your face, hands and

arms from hot coolant or steam with a

large, thick cloth.

Brake fluid

● When replenishing operating fluids, avoid

getting them on engine components or the

exhaust system. These fluids could cause a

fire. Under certain circumstances, ethylene

glycol in the engine coolant can ignite.

NOTICE

● Use only distilled water! All other

water types contain chemicals that could

cause considerable corrosion damage to the

engine. This could lead to engine failure. If

non-distilled water has been added, have the

entire engine cooling system fluid changed

immediately by a specialised workshop.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over

time. Excessive water content in the brake fluid

causes damage to the brake system. The

boiling point of the brake fluid is significantly

reduced by the effect of water. If the water

content in the brake fluid is too high, vapour

bubbles may form in the brake system if the

brakes are subjected to high stresses or during

heavy braking. The bubbles reduce the braking

power, increase the braking distance

● When adding engine coolant, do not re-base

the upper edge of the marked area.

→ Otherwise, when the temperature rises,

the excess liquid will be expelled from the

engine cooling system and may cause

damage.

● If the system is leaking significant amounts

of coolant, only replenish coolant after the

engine has cooled down completely. If the

loss of coolant is significant, there may be

leaks in the engine cooling system.

Immediately have the system checked by a

specialist workshop, otherwise the engine

could be damaged!

Brake fluid specifications

Volkswagen has developed a special brake fluid

optimised for the vehicle's brake system. To

ensure optimum function of the brake system,

Volkswagen expressly recommends the use of

brake fluid in accordance with VW 501 14.

Before using a brake fluid, it should be checked

whether the specifications of the brake fluid, as

stated on the container, meet the requirements of

the vehicle.
