Depress the brake pedal and release it again.

OR: move the selector lever to position P or N

and then select a gear ratio.

Emergency programme

When the automatic transmission is in the

emergency programme, this is indicated on the

instrument panel display by a message and the

yellow indicator light . The position of the

selector lever will continue to be displayed

depending on the fault in the system. The

message disappears after a few seconds. The

yellow indicator light will remain on until

the system failure to be rectified.

Hill Start Assist

Hill-start assist helps you to start uphill while

actively holding the vehicle at a standstill.

Control lamps on the instrument panel

The control lamps light up.

The Hill Start Assist engages automatically if

the following conditions are met

There is a fault in the automatic

transmission. Contact a specialist workshop

immediately and have the system checked.

The following conditions must be met

The brake pedal is not depressed, e.g.

when trying to change the position

selector lever. To select a gear ratio,

depress the brake pedal. See also

Electronic parking brake.

at the same time

– The vehicle is held stationary with the brake

pedal or the electronic parking brake on a

slope until driving starts.

– The engine rotates correctly.

– All four wheels must have good contact with

the surface and the vehicle must not be

axle crossed.

The locking button on the selector lever is

not engaged. The vehicle is prevented

from moving forward. Engage the selector

lever lock → page 177.

– Gear ratio D is selected or reverse gear is

engaged.

The control lamps are flashing.

To start off, take your foot off the brake pedal or

release the electronic parking brake and

accelerate immediately. When driving off, the

brake is progressively released.

The locking button on the selector lever is

not engaged. The vehicle is prevented

from moving forward. Engage the selector

lever lock → page 177.

Problems and solutions related to selector

lever locking

In rare cases, the selector lever lock may not

engage. In this case, the traction is disengaged

to prevent the vehicle from moving

unintentionally. The indicator for the selector

lever position flashes on the instrument panel

display and an additional information text

appears on the display.

The hill start assistant is switched off

immediately:

– If any of the conditions listed on → p. 180 are

no longer met, the hill start assistant switches

on automatically if the following conditions

are met .

Power steering

On vehicles with power steering, the power

steering is automatically adjusted according to

the speed at which the vehicle is being driven

and the direction of the wheels. The power

steering only works when the engine is

running.

– If the driver's door is opened.

– If the engine stalls or cuts out.

If the power steering does not work properly or

not at all, considerably more force than usual

will have to be applied to move the steering

wheel.

– If the selector lever is placed in the neutral

position N.

– If any of the wheels have only minimal

contact with the ground (e.g. in the case of an

axle crossing).

Electronic steering column lock

The steering column is locked by removing the

key from the ignition lock when the vehicle is

stationary. The steering column does not lock

electronically if the vehicle is in motion for more

than approx. 10 seconds after the key has been

removed.

ATTENTION

Unlocking and locking the address

● If driving is not started immediately after

releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle could

roll backwards under certain

circumstances. In this case, depress the

brake pedal immediately or engage the

electronic parking brake.

– Press the ignition and start button once,

without pressing the brake, to unlock the

steering and switch on the ignition → under

Ignition and start button on p. 171.

– Pressing the button again disengages the

ignition. The steering is locked.

● If the engine stops, immediately depress the

brake pedal or engage the electronic

parking brake.

– Open the driver's door after switching off the

ignition with the ignition and start button to

lock the steering.

● If you want to prevent the vehicle from

rolling backwards when driving uphill in

heavy traffic, press the brake pedal for a

few seconds before starting to drive.

If the ignition and start button is pressed while

the ignition is still switched on when attempting

to unlock the steering wheel, an acoustic signal

sounds after the driver's door has been opened.

At the same time, the display in the instrument

cluster shows that the ignition is still switched

on .

WARNING

If the power steering does not work, much

more force is required to turn the steering

wheel and this can make it difficult to

control the vehicle.

Vehicle address information

To make theft of the vehicle more difficult,

always lock the steering before leaving the

vehicle.

● The power steering only works when

the engine is running.

● Never allow the vehicle to be driven with
