Hybrid vehicles: Depending on the ambient conditions and the current operating status of the

vehicle, either the combustion engine is switched on or it is possible to start driving in all-

electric mode. In the latter case the combustion engine remains switched off for the time being.

In both cases it is indicated that the propulsion system is switched on with the symbol which lights

up green in the instrument cluster display.

To switch off the engine, turn the key clockwise or anticlockwise again and release it. The key

can then be removed from the ignition lock if the selector lever is in the P position.

The electronic immobiliser helps to prevent the

engine from being started with an

unauthorised key and the vehicle from being

moved as a result.

Unauthorised key

A chip is integrated in the vehicle key. If the key

is valid, the chip deactivates the electronic

immobiliser automatically when the key is

inserted into the ignition lock.

If an unauthorised key is inserted in the ignition

lock, it can be removed as described below:

– Press the lock button on the selector lever

and release it.

The electronic immobiliser is automatically

activated as soon as the key is removed from

the ignition switch. In vehicles with Keyless

Access, the vehicle key must be locked outside

the vehicle → p. 90.

– Remove the key from the ignition lock.

Emergency disconnection

If the engine does not switch off after turning

the vehicle key in the ignition lock or briefly

pressing the start button, an emergency

shutdown must be carried out.

For this reason, the vehicle can only be started

with a correctly coded Volkswagen Genuine key.

These coded keys are available from a

Volkswagen dealer → p. 87.

Vehicles without Keyless Access: With the selector

lever in the D/S/R positions, turn the key in the

ignition switch clockwise or anticlockwise twice

within 1 second and release it.

The proper functioning of the vehicle is

only guaranteed with the original keys.

started. Use an authorised key or seek the

assistance of qualified personnel.

Important conditions for the automatic

shutdown of the engine

– The driver has fastened his seatbelt.

– The driver's door is closed.

– The engine bonnet is closed.

– The factory-fitted towing bracket is not

electrically connected to a trailer → p. 278.

Start-Stop System

– The engine has reached a minimum

temperature.

– The vehicle has been driven since the

engine was last switched off.

– Vehicles with Climatronic: The cabin temperature

is within the preset values and the air

humidity is not too high.

– Vehicles with Climatronic: Neither too high nor

too low a temperature has been selected.

– Vehicles with Climatronic: A high fan level has

not been manually selected.
