Switching on the Start-Stop system

This function is automatically activated when

the ignition is switched on. Information about the

current status is shown in the instrument cluster

display.

If an unauthorised vehicle key is used or there is

a fault in the system, a message appears in the

instrument cluster display. The engine cannot be

started. Use an authorised key or seek the

assistance of qualified personnel.

The Start-Stop system is available and

the automatic engine shutdown is active.

The electronic immobiliser is active

button (Keyless Access). Start the engine

with the vehicle key. Visit a specialist

workshop and have the system checked.

– To stop, depress the brake pedal and hold it

down. Shortly before the vehicle comes to a

stop or at a standstill, the engine is switched

off.

– To restart, lift your foot off the brake pedal or

press the accelerator.

The button battery in the vehicle key is

empty. Replace the button cell battery. If

necessary, ask for the assistance of

specialised staff → p. 87.

Important conditions for the automatic

shutdown of the engine

– The driver has fastened his seatbelt.

– The driver's door is closed.

– The engine bonnet is closed.

– The factory-fitted towing bracket is not

electrically connected to a trailer → p. 278.

Start-Stop System

– The engine has reached a minimum

temperature.

– The vehicle has been driven since the

engine was last switched off.

– Vehicles with Climatronic: The cabin temperature

is within the preset values and the air

humidity is not too high.

– Vehicles with Climatronic: Neither too high nor

too low a temperature has been selected.

– Vehicles with Climatronic: A high fan level has

not been manually selected.

– The defrosting/defrosting function of the

climate control unit is not activated.

The Start-Stop system automatically switches

off the engine when the vehicle comes to a

standstill and during the vehicle's stop phases.

If necessary, the engine is restarted

automatically.

– The vehicle battery is sufficiently charged.

– The battery temperature is neither too low

nor too high.

Each time the key is pressed, the system status

is shown on the instrument panel display.

– The vehicle is not on a steep slope.

– The front wheels are not very turned.

– The heated windscreen is not connected.

– Reverse gear is not engaged.

When the Start-Stop system has switched off

the engine, it starts up again immediately if the

system is switched off by pressing .

Always switch off the Start-Stop system

manually when driving through water.

Operation of the Start-Stop system with

adaptive cruise control (ACC) activated

When the adaptive cruise control actively

intervenes on the brakes until the vehicle comes

to a stop, the engine is switched off.

Conditions that cause the engine to restart

automatically

With adaptive cruise control active, the engine is

restarted in the following cases:

accidents and serious injury.

● The airbags and seatbelt pretensioners do

not operate when the ignition is switched

off.

Conditions requiring the engine to be started

manually

In the following cases, the engine must be

started manually with the vehicle key:

● The brake booster does not work when the

engine is switched off. Therefore, when the

engine is switched off, the brake pedal must

be pressed harder to brake the vehicle.

– If the driver unfastens his seat belt.

– If the driver's door is opened.

– If the engine bonnet is opened.

● The power steering does not work when

the engine is switched off. When the engine

is switched off, more force is required to

steer the vehicle.

Switching the Start-Stop system off and on

manually

● If the ignition is switched off, the steering

column lock could engage and it would not

be possible to control the vehicle.

Depending on the equipment, the key is also

used to activate and deactivate the engine

shutdown function during coasting.

– To deactivate the system, press the button

on the centre console → Fig. 133 . When the

Start-Stop system is deactivated, the indicator

light in the button comes on.

● The Start-Stop system must always be

switched off when work is being carried

out in the engine compartment.

NOTICE

– To switch the system back on, press the
