2. Open the cap of the jump-start connection point positive battery terminal+ (→ Jump start connection point
(positive)).
3. Connect one end of thered jump leadA to the positive terminal+ of the battery on the vehicle with the
discharged 12-volt vehicle battery. You will need to remove the cover from the positive terminal on the 12-volt
1
vehicle battery. → Fig. 1
→
.
4. Connect the other end of thered jump leadB to the positive terminal+ of the vehicle battery providing
2
assistance → Fig. 1
.
5. Connect one end of theblack jump leadC preferably to a suitable jump start connection point(earth
connection) or otherwise to a solid metal part that is securely bolted onto the cylinder block, or to the cylinder
3
block itself of the vehicle providing assistance → Fig. 1
.
6. On the vehicle with the flat 12-volt battery, connect the other end of theblack jump leadD preferably to the
jump lead connection point (earth connection), or otherwise to a solid metal part that is securely bolted onto
3
the cylinder block, or to the cylinder block itself → Fig. 1
→
.
7. Position the leads in such a way that they cannot come into contact with any moving parts in the engine
compartment.
Starting the engine
1. Start the engine of the vehicle providing assistance and let it run at idle.
2. Start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged 12-volt vehicle battery and wait two or three minutes until
the engine is running “smoothly”.
If the engine does not start immediately, switch off the starter after about 10 seconds and try again after about 1
minute. If the engine still does not start, seek expert assistance.
Removing the jump leads
1. Before disconnecting the jump leads, switch off the dipped beam headlights.
2. Turn on the air conditioning system or the heating and fresh air system blower and the rear window heating in
the vehicle with the discharged 12-volt vehicle battery. This helps to minimise voltage peaks which are
generated when the leads are disconnected.
3. When the engines are running, the jump leads should be removed only in the orderD – C – B – A → Fig. 1.
4. Close the cap of the jump-start connection point positive battery terminal+ (→ Jump start connection point
(positive)).
5. Go to a correspondingly qualified workshop and have the 12-volt vehicle battery checked.
Introduction
Towing requires some experience, especially when using a tow rope. Both drivers should be familiar with the
technique required for towing. Inexperienced drivers should not attempt to tow.
Make sure that no excessive pulling forces occur and take care to avoid jerking movements. When towing offroad,
there is always a risk of overloading the anchorage points.
Observe any legal requirements when towing.
