Checking and topping up fluids
The correct fuel grade for your vehicle is given on
a sticker on the inside of the fuel tank flap. Fur-
ther notes on fuel ðpage 310.
WARNING
Audi recommends you NOT to carry a spare
fuel canister in the vehicle. Fuel could escape
from the canister and catch fire, particularly
in the event of an accident. Fire, explosions
and injuries could result.
The tank capacity of your vehicle is given in the
Technical data section ðpage 378.
To prevent fuel and vapours from escaping, make
sure that the fuel tank is properly sealed; other-

– If, in exceptional circumstances, you have to
carry a spare fuel canister, please observe
the following warnings:
wise the indicator lamp
will light up.
WARNING
– Always place the spare fuel canister on the
ground before filling it. Never fill fuel into
the spare fuel canister with the canister
placed in or on top of the vehicle. Electro-
static electricity can build up while filling
the canister and ignite the fuel vapours.
– When using metal fuel canisters, always
keep the filler nozzle in contact with the
canister to prevent the build-up of static
electricity.
Improper refuelling and improper handling of
fuel can cause explosions, fire, serious burns
and other injuries.
– Do not smoke. Keep naked flames away
from the vehicle.
– The ignition must be switched off when re-
fuelling.
– Mobile phones and radio equipment must
always be switched off when refuelling.
Electromagnetic radiation can cause sparks
which could start a fire.
– Keep the filler nozzle inserted as far as
possible into the filler opening while fill-
ing the canister.
– The auxiliary heating* must be switched off
when refuelling.
– Observe all relevant local regulations on
using, storing and transporting spare fuel
canisters.
– Fuel can escape if you do not insert the filler
nozzle all the way into the filler neck. Escap-
ing fuel can ignite and cause a fire.
– Never get into the vehicle while refuelling. If
you do have to get into the vehicle in excep-
tional circumstances, close the door and
touch a metal surface before handling the
filler nozzle again. This will discharge any
static electricity which could generate
sparks. Sparks can start a fire when refuel-
ling.
CAUTION
– If fuel overflows onto the vehicle, remove it
completely straight away to prevent dam-
age to the vehicle.
– Never run the tank completely dry. If there
is an irregular fuel supply, misfiring can oc-
cur. As a result unburnt fuel can enter the
exhaust system and cause damage to the
catalytic converter(s).
– The filler nozzle cuts out as soon as the fuel
tank is full. Do not try to put in more fuel af-
ter the nozzle cuts out, as this will fill the
expansion chamber in the fuel tank. Do not
try to put in more fuel after the automatic
filler nozzle has switched off; this may cause
the fuel to overflow if it becomes warm, po-
tentially at a later point in time. This can
cause explosion, fire and serious or fatal in-
juries.
– Vehicles with diesel engine: When filling
the fuel tank after having run it completely
dry, the ignition must be switched on for at
least 30 seconds without starting the en-
gine. When you then start the engine it may
take longer than normal (up to one minute)
for the engine to start firing. This is because
air needs to be bled from the fuel system
while starting.
