Engine immobiliser system  
The engine immobiliser system is a theft  
prevention system that uses an electronic  
code. An electronic chip in the key con-  
tains an electronic code that is trans-  
mitted to the vehicle. Only when the the  
electronic code in the chip corresponds  
to the vehicle’s registered code will the  
immobiliser system be cancelled allowing  
the engine to start.  
NOTICE  
Contact your Toyota dealer if any of the  
following indicator conditions occurs:  
D The indicator light stays on except  
when the theft deterrent system is set-  
ting or activating. See “Theft deterrent  
system” on page 39 in this Section.  
D The indicator light does not start flash-  
ing under the following situations:  
Vehicles with standard-type ignition  
switch—When the key is removed  
from the ignition switch.  
Vehicles with smart entry and start  
system—When the ENGINE START  
STOP button is pressed off.  
D The ndicator light flashes inconsis-  
tently.  
e engine immobiliser system is automati-  
cally cancelled when:  
The engine immobiliser system is autom-  
cally set when:  
D Vehicles with standard-type ignition  
switch—You insert the key to the ignition  
switch.  
D Vehicles with standard-type ignition  
switch—The key is removed frm the igni-  
tion switch.  
D Vehicles with smart entry and start sys-  
tem—You enter the vehicle carrying a key  
and press the ENGINE START STOP but-  
ton.  
D Vehicles with smart entrand start sys-  
tem—The ENGINE SART STOP button  
(ignition switch) is pressed off.  
Even if the key battery is discharged, the  
engine can be started. See “Smart entry  
and start system” on page 25 in this Sec-  
tion.  
The indicator light will start flashing to show  
that the system is set.  
When the system is cancelled, the indicator  
light will go off.  
Vehicles with standard-type ignition switch—  
If the engine is turned off and the key is left  
in the ignition switch for 20 seconds, the en-  
gine immobiliser system will also be set. In  
this case, the system can be cancelled by  
turning the ignition switch on.

Wireless remote control—  
For your Toyota dealer to make you a new  
key with a built-in transponder chip, your  
dealer will need your key number and key  
(vehicles with standard-type ignition switch)  
or electronic key (vehicles with smart entry  
and start system). However, there is a limit  
to the number of additional keys your Toyota  
dealer can make for you.  
If you make your own duplicate key, you  
will not be able to cancel the system or  
start the engine.  
NOTICE  
Vehicles with standard-type ignition switch  
Do not modify, remove or disassemble  
the engine immobiliser system. If any  
unauthorised changes or modifications  
are made, proper operation of the sys-  
tem cannot be guaranteed.  
Vehicles with smart entry and start system  
1. Lock switch  
2. Unlock switch  
3. Alarm switch  
4. Boot lid open switch  
5. Indicator light  
The wireless remote control system is  
designed to lock or unlock all the doors,  
open the boot lid, or activate the alarm  
system  
from  
a
distance  
within  
approximately 1 m of the vehicle.  
The remote control cannot be used when the  
key is in the ignition switch (vehicles with  
standard-type ignition switch) or the ignition  
switch is set to ACC or ON (vehicles with  
smart entry and start system).
